We played Detroit last right one month ago. That was the last game of our nightmare gauntlet and finally our schedule opened up.

After the 2 Detroit games where he went full POA, we started playing less contenders and had the opportunity to coast a bit, so it’s only natural he took the pedal off the gas.

On top of that, the contenders we played in the last month, Boston and Denver (1W-2L respectively) have been the best teams this year to circumveil our defense, especially Castle’ POA.

Wemby is outweighed by maybe 50 pounds by all the elite centers: Jokic, Embiid, KAT, Sengun, the list goes on and on. That is a clear disadvantage, and it shows when he plays these guys I mentioned. The Thunder were a second-round exit with Chet at the 5 and won the finals when they slid him to the 4. Why? Chet now has a weight advantage and a length advantage at the 4 and can better utilize his length doing what? Oh, that’s right, BLOCKING SHOTS while Hartenstein holds down the opposing team’s big man. Wemby is effectively neutered at the 5, as it’s up to him to play post defense, which is his biggest weakness. It’s no surprise he came into the league playing power forward next to Zack Collins. The only reason Wemby isn’t playing PF is because we have failed to provide him with a suitable starting 5.

And he still clearly gets the better of them in most of those matchups, cause he makes up for it by creating disadvantages for them with his mobility, athleticism and shooting from the perimeter making them guard in space. Teams are rarely gonna kill you with post ups from their big and win games that way anyways, with jokic’s absurd efficiency being the main outlier.

Chalking OKC’s success up purely to a positional change is absurd. Ihart is fantastic, if you swapped him with an average C like say Jakob or Kornet, it wouldn’t be near as effective. Additionally they added Caruso and saw significant development from their young core. And Chet at the 5 doesn’t create the same favourable mismatches wemby does, so it’s not an apples to apples comparison anyways.

The reason wemby is playing the 5 is because that’s what unlocks him offensively, and the primary defensive role of the 5 in today’s game isn’t just to guard opposing bigs 1v1… it’s to guard the rim as a whole, which is significantly easier when you’re on the opposing big and can give them more space than your typical wing. Wemby at the 5, especially with the teams current roster construction, only works if you have a high level defensive C that can also shoot the 3, and the league has very few of those…

Remember this is an argument about roster construction. Right now we have two fantastic young guards in Stephon Castle and Dylan Harper. The game slows down during the playoffs; everything becomes more congested, and the team that has the physical advantage usually comes out on top. I’d rather the Spurs had a Fox-tier center or PF than a Fox-tier PG, as that would have freed up Wemby to do what he does best, and that’s block shots and grab rebounds. Obviously we can’t change that now, but it’s something we can look towards if the playoffs don’t go the way we want.

And when the game slows down, half court offences become far more important which means shooting becomes far more important, which again leads back to the point that 5s that can shoot and defend are exceptionally rare. If a player is putting on an mvp campaign while leading his team to 60 wins at position A, AND playing him at position B requires a very niche and hard to come by fit, then that’s not by any stretch his natural position. And blocking shots and getting rebounds are both easier when you’re playing closer to the basket defensively, which again occurs far more often when you’re guarding the opposing 5.

Sure it’s an option wemby’s unique versatility allows us to explore if we need to down the road, but it’s not his natural position by any stretch and it’s not something we should be focused on rectifying

The Spurs found Tim Duncan multiple centers, and they won several championships. The Thunder found Chet a center, and they won a championship.
