Okay, now you’ve overdone it. His bad games get posted here, his good games don’t. That’s all that’s happening. Thus, you’re perceiving him as having more bad games than good ones. He’s had like 40 really good games this season, which is what makes the 10-15 or so bad games really disappointing. We can see what he can be, but he’s just way too inconsistent.
I like Paolo, but he’s been a negative more often than a positive - the Magic have lost his minutes in 38 games and won his minutes in 28 (it’ll be 29 after tonight I imagine).
Even charitably, he’s an average player (who wants the ball often) about half the time. He doesn’t have significantly more bad games than good ones, but that’s still not what you want from a franchise player. It’s not just that his successes don’t get posted about - I think a lot of people do want to see him succeed. It’s just that, as of yet, he’s not living up to pre draft expectations and there’s some evidence to suggest the Magic may be better without him (particularly if they can get a haul of assets in return for him).
What those numbers don’t show is him having to carry our dogshit 2nd unit all the time as the only starter
Every star player in the league does this and they dominate those minutes cause the other teams are playing subs too.
No you don’t know Mose. He pulls are starters early outside of Paolo and occasionally Suggs. But most of the time it’s Paolo and the bench against most of the other teams starters. He then puts in Bane and the other starters against the other teams 2nd unit.
That’s a standard subbing pattern for staggering your two main scorers.
Facts, the problem is that he’s trash 60% of the time lol. Your star player can’t be this up and down. There are plenty of role players in the league that could do what he is doing or better if given the opportunity to be the first option and had that many touches

Can he do it the whole year though? Most good players can go on a heater. He just had a stretch of like 6 losses in a row where he was GARBAGE. The Magic lost to the Pacers and almost lost to the Kings, this should not be the case if Paolo was as good as his raw PRA indicates. Also, 58% TS is not good, that’s like average, and that’s higher than he normally shoots

Austin Reaves, though he’s debatably not a role player any more, Peyton Pritchard, Nickeil Alexander Walker, Aaron Gordon if healthy, Julius Randle, Benedict Mathurin, Ajay Mitchell, Dillon Brooks, OG Anunoby, shit Anthony Black probably could if you give him another year. Scoring 23 ppg is not that impressive if it’s on bad efficiency. That’s the difference maker, a lot of players could do that if they just had the ball in their hands all the time, but it wouldn’t lead to winning basketball.

Fair, I stretched the definition of role player on a couple of these. But the fact that Paolo is pretty comparable to old Dubious Handle while be the first option is the issue. At least he has Ant running things and a decent coach, Paolo is up shits creek with no paddle
Julius Randle was all nba. Mathurin was a third option, not a role player, OG could not score 20 ppg, he can’t create consistently, and Anthony Black hasn’t cracked 15 yet and probably won’t. AG was a first option and couldn’t crack it at Orlando!

When was Mathurin a third option? This year on the hospital Pacers? He’s for sure a role player, look at him on the Clippers. OG averages 22/5/3 in games without Jalen Brunson, so yes he could. And that’s why I said next year for Anthony Black, he still needs some development. And AG is better now than he was in Orlando, he can shoot the 3 now. If he had the ball as much as Paolo he could absolutely score as much as him, and probably out rebound him too. AG is very good, he’s just injured a lot

Brooks shows what the best scoring role players can do, 20 ppg, at peak that’s the most a role player-level player can get.

Like, I definitely agree that Paolo isn’t amazing. He’s just good at best right now. However, he’s definitely better than Jabari. I was genuinely shocked reading that people actually believed in that.

Like if the Lakers were healthy with Luka and Reaves and I as a fan was given the option of having Jabari on the team or Paolo (no contracts considered) I would take Jabari
He’s not an incredible shooter or anything but he’s better than Paolo and is a much better defender and he plays off ball way more
