I think if you’re going to have a (fair) nuanced take on kon, Flagg warrants the same. he did have a slow start to the year, because he was playing 2 positions down. the mavs were an absolute MESS of an organisation, more so than the hornets, and he had to adapt quick. when he did adapt, he played much better.

that aside, the eye test says that Flagg is a decently better passer/playmaker, and a FAR better defender.

kon is significantly more efficient, and that’s a big point in his favour for sure.

but lastly - in races this close, it often comes down to the wire at the end of the season. over the last 10:

Flagg: 27/7/6
Kon: 15/6/3

I think that just kind of solidifies it. both have had historic seasons - Cooper just really turned it up as the season went on.

It’s how he has been playing and how well that translates to his team winning. And it’s not by a lot that I have Kon over coop. Coop is balling too but I value winning more than others. Especially went both teams have a similar level of ability to win. Kon is just more efficient and is shooting the 3 like crazy. That’s very valuable.

Clearly the mavs wanted to tank so that hurts coop. He would have shown a more consistent level of play that would have gotten him the Roy easily. It just didn’t happen like that.

I just think Kons season is more impressive. Eye test and stats just look a bit better. Yeah coop is the better player but to me Kon had the better season. That’s all. Either could win and I wouldn’t be mad.

I don’t think roty should strictly be viewed as “most valuable rookie”. I think that should be most of it, but i also think how promising your career looks based on your rookie season should factor into the voting.

So for ROTY races I’m almost always going to be biased to the younger player, particularly when it’s this close. Sure college experience isn’t the same as nba experience, but it’s still experience + another year to physically grow which Flagg hasn’t had yet.

Maybe it’s just me, but it also feels like he’s not anywhere near as aggressive shooting it as the rest of the guys on that list.

He’s not sprinting round screens and taking crazy off balance shots, or taking contested step backs. He just consistently finds ways to get open, and knocks it down when he’s in rhythm.

I do wonder how much more aggressive he can realistically get given his athleticism (he can’t really elevate like Beasley or create space like Harden) but it’s intriguing to see that he’s doing all this purely by just hitting shots rather than hunting threes all game.

Contrary to current opinion, he doesn’t sit in the corner and wait for his free open 3 from Lamelo. Hes constantly relocating around the court trying to find a pocket of space, and a lot of his shots are assisted because Lamelo (and the rest of his team) knows how to find him once he creates enough separation.

Also he has a really fast release on his shots so he’ll take shots with a lot less space compared to most other players.

Fuck sports gambling, but gambling odds are the best view of who is expected to win something at any given time. Cooper is now around a 2 to 1 favorite to win. Reddit posts and individual talking heads dont matter (though I think the race is very tight and could still change).

Regarding MVP, maybe, maybe not. He didn’t average that so I’m not really sure the point you’re making lol. To win MVP in the last 10-15 games he didn’t just have to play great, he had to play better enough compared to Shai that it made up for the gap in the first 67-72 games of the season. That just didn’t happen.

i have argued Flagg is the better player and deserves it more. Its a close race but i think Flagg takes it, especially with how much pressure is on him to lead a team of nobodies talent wise basically compared to the Hornets who have multiple all star level players besides Kon, who is basically borderline all star level almost. The difference in net rating between the Mavs and Hornets is around 15 points. The Mavs punted the whole season and let Coop go crazy. The results are him averaging 20-6-4, only slightly better than what Kon has done with way better efficiency for an actual good team.

Cooper is a super talent, he’s going to be incredible. He was really good this year for being a 19 year old rookie. But Kon is an actual good player right now. I don’t think Coop should get the nod because the Mavs punted the season to let Coop fuck around and accumulate stats.

To have a nearly 20 ppg rookie scorer, a net positive out there that’s on a good team is unheard of…

Personally I give it to Flagg as he’s younger , on a worse team and the #1 option.

Kon is amazing but he’s on a great team where he can be an elite role player because they already have a #1 and 2 option drawing attention.
