[Charania] The Chicago Bulls want to keep Billy Donovan as the head coach for as long as he wants to remain there.
I miss the Chicago/Atlanta invitational or as some kids would say The Eastern Conference Play-In tournament™
Ive been seeing people call it the DeMar DeRozan Invitational
Formerly known as the Trae Young Invitational.
King of first round exits
2027: light the (play-in tournament) beam!!!
The Heat, Raptors and Magic will hold it down for the foreseeable future
We’re not going anywhere 😤
literally and figuratively speaking
Lol people love including the Raptors here as if they’ve been a play-in staple
They’ve played a grand total of 1 play-in game (2023).
To be fair that game was extremely memorable because Diar Derozan put up a DPOY performance defending free throws.
There’s a reason I said “foreseeable future”, and it has to do with the foreseeable future.
I understand why you would hold firm on that term. They’ve been outside the play-in most of this year and just dropped down after yesterday’s loss, so that convenience helps your argument. Congrats, you are correct right now and I am wrong. Time will tell how that ages
Leaving out the Kings of Shit Mountain (Miami Heat) is disrespectful, they’re a play in dynasty.
They’re so good that I actually consider them a Playoff bound team each year by default, but yeah you’re right, they need to show more emotion like PatBev tho.
Once James Tiberius Butler got traded, they lost their play-in tournament intimidation.
I don’t love Billy, but he’s probably better than whoever we would hire after.
I don’t think he’s a terrible coach, but if you’re cleaning out the front office you might as well let the new president/GM hire a new coach.
INB4 Billy gets promoted to GM and Wes Unseld Jr. gets promoted from assistant coach to Head Coach
Kill me now
I’m laughing to ensure this remains a joke and not reality.
Bulls should just give a player developer coach like Sam Cassell an offer and let Billy D go wherever it is he wants to go.
Nothing about Billy D’s resume shows he is an obvious good coach or talent evaluator to remain the HC or become the GM. This is just a money situation with Reinsdorf.
Hands off
Was Micheal Malone a choice? (because UNC hired Michael Malone)
We don’t miss Billy at all
Legit feels like people forgot about him over here.
Why
Reinsdorf has already paid him, he’s never getting fired and can quit any time he wants.
Nba coaching sucks so bad dude. I remember when this guy was hailed in Okc as a great coach and a perfect bridge from Scott Brooks and now he’s apparently an idiot that can’t tie his shoes together but the owner won’t fire him because he’s cheap. You get 0 credit when you win and all the blame when you lose
I don’t think he’s great at developing young talent but he has consistently overperformed with the garbage rosters AKME has given him in Chicago imo
i thought Bulls fans dont want him because hes winning too much games. thats a praise to him not blame.
sucks so bad dude
Brother he’s making over $9,000,000 annually. I can tell you about plenty other jobs that “sucks so bad” compared to that.
Reinsdorf just extended AK last year and he’s fired, to be fair.
No disrespect to Shams, but I’m not sure they actually do
No they do. Ownership loves him. I wanna see a new coach who is gonna prioritize the development of the young guys but ownership sees differently for some reason
“Bench sexton for bad defense?” ❌
“Bench buzelis cuz hes young?” ✅
I get he had a great college career but what has this man done in the NBA to get this much leeway. The highlight of his now decade long career has been blowing a 3-1 lead to the warriors and taking the rockets to 7 in 2020.
Strong Doc vibes from him — mediocre coach, great politician
i think that’s disrespectful to Doc, Doc is still one of the winningest coaches in the league. he’s been consistently quite competent even with less talented teams (2019 Clippers). Billy Donavan has won one playoff series ever.
You’re comparing mediocrity to mediocrity. Rivers is Avery Johnson with a ring
the memes have gone too far. I don’t think he’s a great coach and don’t want him coaching my team, but there is a very short list of coaches that have achieved more than Doc Rivers. Dismissing that as simply “mediocre” is just ignorant.
I wasn’t comparing resumes, and you are correct in that those aren’t close
Am unaware of memes you speak of, but you right, mediocre is inappropriate way to describe making 4 top teams decline. insert personal insult here in response to yours
what personal insult? I talked about the statement you made. not about you personally.
you also didn’t really respond to what I said and just tried to clap back by giving a different declarative statement that had nothing to do with the whole “achieved more than 99.99 percent of coaches” thing, but since that’s what you want to talk about, how did he make 4 top teams decline? the magic, obviously not, definitely not responsible for the Celtics declining either. Clippers? I mean he choked in the playoffs but he also made the playoffs with Lou Williams as his best player.
so you’re down to two teams, and tbh i definitely think he shouldn’t have made dame tear his Achilles. that was a poor choice by him
This be fair he hasn’t made that many playoffs to begin with.
Only Reddit thinks doc is a mediocre coach. The basketball pros think he’s a hall of famer.
Yeah ask all the fanbases that had the privilege of being coached by Doc freaking Rivers lol
Not gonna go to bat for Billy Donovan at all, but if push came to shove I’d still have my team coached by him instead of Doc, and that should tell you something.
why? he won one playoff series.
I don’t think Doc is this next level coach but I don’t think fans even know what a basketball coach does so it’s kind of a wash.
Do you think Doc would win a playoff series in Chicago?
Okay let’s break down Doc’s career then.
Three playoff seasons in Orlando, never got out of the first round. Surrendered a 3-1 series lead to Detroit(this’ll be important later).
Got the Celtics coaching job. Basically gifted a three hall of famer squad, great regular season and finally won a ring but it still took him 26 games to do so, which is still an NBA record by the way. That team was one of the greatest regular season teams of all time. 66 wins, +9.30 SRS. They were basically expected to cruise to the Finals yet they needed a game 7 to beat a 37 win Atlanta Hawks, and another 7 game series against the Cavs on top of it.
2009? This time he needed 7 games AGAIN to get past the first round against a 41 win team in Chicago, which is still regarded as one of the most fun playoff series of all time. It was fun, sure but I assume it wasn’t fun for Celtics fans. Got eliminated by Orlando the next series in 7.
2010 was a very injury riddled season so I kinda give him a pass but I still think that team should have won the title so there’s that.
2012 he was zapped by game 6 LeBron, this also grants a pass.
His Clipper career is riddled with great teams who didn’t go anywhere and he let another 3-1 lead slip in 2015 to Houston, who benched Harden and just let Josh Smith and Corey Brewer bomb him to death in game 6.
And if that wasn’t enough, he let ANOTHER 3-1 lead slip with the same team 5 years later.
I’d be terrified if Doc was my coach and I sure damn have my reasons for it.
It tells me that as gm you would take a non hall of fame coach over a hall of famer. That speaks volumes about you.
You know Billy is in the HOF too, right?
Yes, yes I would, and I don’t care about your opinion of me over this lol
Doc is the best average coach of all time.
He is in the hall of fame for being an average nba head coach I guess then.
He’s a good coach, just been handed shit the last few years and has honestly outperformed expectations given the roster. It just may not seem like it but our win totals outside of this year were always higher than projected
I’m not saying he’s top 10 in the league or whatever but he’s also far from the biggest problem with this team and there’s no harm in keeping him around another year or two as we rebuild but I have a feeling he wants to move on and not coach for a bottom feeding team
Yeah but what are the Bulls doing? They never had a competent roster good enough to win series, mostly not even good enough to make the playoffs, they also never just tanked, drafted Essengue and will draft late again instead of top 5 picks, they kept their assets thinking they could sell then higher, sold them all for 2nd rounders. Now they might start tanking. There is no explanation as to why they have been losing in the play in for years
Oh there’s an explanation; Reinsdorf wants the concession/ ticket money from another home game. Tanking teams lose out on butts in seats.
I mean he was the reason OKC beat 67 win spurs team while being underdogs (even with 2 mvp caliber players 😭) but he’s a shit coach despite that like he was the reason Thunder lost all those times especially 2017
There were so many great teams in 2017 it’s almost unbelievable when you think about it. Like 50% of the top talent in the league was Warriors, Spurs, Cavs and OKC, 15% more Houston and Clippers… but the rest of the league was quite bad.
Just realized you were talking about 2016, pretty much the same though, minus the Rockets who weren’t quite there yet.
doesnt even seem like a great development coach which youd hope for from a from college guy
What a day for Chicago basketball teams
I am ecstatic and disappointed at these teams right now
It’s been rough
Excited about Angel?
I wouldn’t call myself a fan of his, but I don’t necessarily think any of our failings are his fault either. We’ve doubled and tripled down on weak rosters for about 7-8 years now and our player development is doo doo. I think he worked with what we had.
He might be a shitty coach, but I don’t know if he’s really gotten a chance to prove it here.
He’s a proven solid to good coach.
He might not be able to get you over the hump for a championship, but that’s arguably more on the front office. Bulls have never even been in that conversation and won’t be for the foreseeable future.
Coaches are overrated, it’s a players league ultimately.
I think Donovan is not the problem. What could our rosters have accomplished in this time that they haven’t?
We missed on a lot of lottery picks and made some awful trades. That’s why we are where we are.
Bulls come on lmao
Bro hahahhahaha how can they be this bad
So not long
I have a feeling his heart is in college ball
just fell to my knees in a Costco
just saw some guy fall to his knees in Costco
Just saw some guy watch another guy fall to his knees in Costco
Why are so many of us in the same Costco…I’m gunna go get a hotdog, y’all want one?
Terrible ownership, terrible front office
of course you would when you have a coach who won a championship made the nba finals won more than one playoff series consistently makes the playoffs won co-coach of the year one time for a different team, you gotta keep him
even if billy is an awesome coach, why would you want to maximize the winning of a badly built roster for the foreseeable future if the ceiling is mid.
A bad coach creates bad habits for the players you want to develop.
This is a deeply unserious team.
This is me finding out Billy Donovan still has a job
The question to me is why does Billy Donovan want to stay in Chicago?
POBO/HC Billy
Billy trying to decide whether it’s worth leaving a shit, but well-paid job that he has for life.
What GM isn’t going to want to bring in his own guy? This is such a Bulls tactic.
Billy Donovan isn’t the problem. The roster construction and failure to pick a lane is the problem
Oatmeal is fine.
#freeBilly
Japanese soldier who kept fighting 28 years after World War II
Lifetime contract
I have no problem with Billy as the FO is/was the real issue
How is it that I hate my own team
Billy will be coaching the Kings by July
And this organization pushed Phil Jackson out the door…
Makes sense to keep him for now imo.
Keep some consistency there- hes been mostly dealt a bad hand. Last thing we need is another Hoiberg / Boylen situation.
Bulls are bad and getting worse. Not saying it’s coaching but something isn’t working.
Pls no
You can’t expect a front office to not want to fire him and start fresh ….
Which is probably until the end of the season. Dude went from one of the best run organizations to one of the very worst. I’m sure he wants out.
There’s that commitment to mediocrity I know
So as long as the checks keep clearing… sell the fucking team Jerry
Can Bulls fans tell me what young talent Billy has developed? Are the Bulls not pivoting to a full rebuild?
one of them is on your team
So, Coby White who eventually got sent out for a second-round pick and being mediocre as a coach is enough for Billy to dictate his remaining time with the Bulls.
You asked who he developed, Coby White vastly improved under Donovan. That’s called development. A coach doesn’t dictate what a player goes for on the trade market, AKME does, and they are fired. Welcome to the news.
A coach’s development of said player directly correlates to their value. Are you going to tell me next that Patrick Williams development as a negative player doesn’t dictate his value on the market? And Billy had no role in that?
Bulls were offered a first+ in more than one occasion for Coby White. AKME waited until he had absolutely no value and we had to tank.
If you think Billy Donovan did not develop Coby White “because AKME waited until he was an expiring half season rental on a fire sale tank team,” you have a room temp IQ. And it seems you do. So no point in continuing to talk to a 2x4.
Matas, Giddey, Coby, Ayo
Not even Spo could make Patrick Williams, Dalen Terry, or Julian Phillips work
I also think it says a lot that all of the guys on the team and former players seem to like Billy a lot, never hear of any coaching drama or dysfunction with him
He’s not rocking your world but he’s far from incompetent
GM’s generally like to bring in their own people, Im not sure having Billy there is worth it, if it hinders your ability to hire a GM.
To be fair I think he probably doesn’t want to continue either, I don’t know how much of an appetite he has for tanking/rebuilding teams at this point in his career but depends I guess on other coaching gigs being availalbe
if he didn’t want to continue, UNC job was his. he intentionally delayed his decision after the “portal” which opens today and why unc rushed to hire malone.
Why are these comments so against Billy? The bulls have been fairly competent over the years with shit rosters and front office
i don’t get it either, except for saying he can be coach for life. Billy is doing fine, but not like… Spo or that level
Truly, he’s been dealt a shit hand and done better than I would have expected
