As bad as Alex is statistically, the Bucks paid $300,000 on a buyout from a contract at Panathinaikos and drafted Georgios Kalaitzakis at 60 in 2021. He’d played 16 games across 3 years in the euroleague on an average of 3 minutes, as (what I understand, which could be wrong) a favor to Giannis’ agent.

He played 9 games, all in garbage time, and was signed to a regular 3 year deal over Mamu who we relegated to a 2-way deal and played 41 games. Kalaitzakis was later waived to make space for Wesley Matthews.

I don’t think he was a worse player than Alex, but the circumstances around him landing with us and relegating a more talented player to a two-way deal frustrates me more as a fan than just a shitty FA two-way signing like Alex

Thanasis was a legit basketball player. He was drafted on his own merit and be was a legit contributor in the top Euroleague level. He is an athletic freak, playing with passion and intensity. He is also a very easy going person with a very positive locker room presence. All his former teammates adore him and some have opened up on his positive presence for the team. You cannot really ask for more from the 15th man on he roster.

Alex however is none of those….. I cannot defend that one. The guy wouldn’t be able to find a spot in a bad Euroleague roster

I played with him in a pick up game about a year and a half ago…didn’t pass the eye test for me at all.

Really hard to say in a game of pick up ball, but he didn’t seem to possess many nba attributes I could see…and I’ve played with my fair share of pros.

Alex is not a professional basketball player period, he wouldn’t even get a benchwarmer spot in the euroleague. Thanasis and kostas might not be good enough for the NBA but at least they could play elsewhere at least ok.

The Bucks having Thanasis at the end of the bench is one thing. I’m fine with it. Silly because of how bad he is, but it’s whatever.

To me, the Bucks using a 2-way, a far more useful asset, on Alex is just absolutely shameful. One of the low-key things regarding the Buck’s recent demise, I’d argue moreso than their draft record, is their completely lack of getting ANYTHING out of their g-league team. You look around the league, championship teams, and see how they use it. A good chunk of NBA rosters now have significant g-league experience. When you are a team up against the tax, a 2-way is a very cost efficient way of developing talent. The Bucks completely forfeited that for a player who wasn’t even good in high school (I saw him live, he was terrible even then)

I actually like the precedent this sets, superstars can start hooking their boys up with a salary and healthcare paid for by someone else if they can at least ball just a little bit

Bronny is less egregious but I think the fact that he’s Lebron’s son makes it a more impressive “accomplishment”. Lots of dudes have been good enough in their primes that a team would give a roster spot to their shitty brother, but to still be so good at 40 you get your kid an undeserved nba career is wild.

Alex would have had more time to grow and develop if he had played NCAA ball.

Improved fundamentals would have allowed them to play more in the States.
