Flagg is obviously going to be the better player long term. He’s already the better player. But Kon deserves ROY because he’s had a better season.

Why would he be the comp? His best season was barely better than Flagg’s rookie year. I loved watching Hill and am loving what Flagg is doing as well. The comp just doesn’t make sense to me. I’m not saying it’s wrong, I’m just not seeing it.

I never really get this. You don’t deserve the award unless you turn in the best performance and win it. They only give out one. Kon has won it.

Sometimes the second best beats the best. The award doesn’t have to reflect who should have had the best season.

Yeah I really don’t care. ROTY never gets brought up again anyway. It’s definitely cool in the moment, but I won’t lose much sleep over it.

I mean it’s funny for MVP we give it to the guy with the best supporting cast a lot.

I flat out don’t understand that your ROTY. MVP, it makes sense as valuable is very subjective. ROTY should go to the best player individually. 90% of the time, a rookie is on a bad team anyways which is why they were drafted there. Judging a rookie on their teammates will never make sense to me.

Cooper averages more rebounds, more assists, more steals, more blocks.

On the other hand, Cooper also gets to make more mistakes while Kon has to pick his spots and make the most out of the more limited opportunities he gets as the third banana on a team whose every game matters.

Just very different types of difficulty in either one’s roles.

Exactly, like I get Kon is a contributor to the success that hornets have had but their team is already leagues better than the mavs.

He never said unanimous and my post literally says that there are strong, well-reasoned arguments for both players.

If the worst team got the 1st pick that would make sense, but in case you haven’t heard there’s a lottery.

Despite incredibly low odds, the team with the 9th worst record got the 1st pick. A year latter, they have the 6th worst record in the league.

Meanwhile, the Charlotte Hornets, with the 3rd worst record last year, got the 4th pick and selected Kon. They are now middle of the table, 8th in the East, and guaranteed to at least make the play-in.

The funny part is in one conversation (RotY) they’ll say how great a situation Kon is in blah blah blah and then in basically any other conversation the same people will trash the hornets organization lol. I do love me some mental gymnasts. You’re right tho, our org basically made a complete turnaround immediately following Jordan’s departure. It wasn’t until we got healthy and started winning games (and drafted Kon) that the rest of the league began to notice.

Kinda proving my point bringing that up. When Melo was out Kon averaged 22.1 points, 6.5 rebounds, and 4.2 assists as the primary option. Their record was 3-7, still showing Kon more efficient than Flagg.

I agree, but you could also say it’s been easier for Coop to put up raw stats when he’s been the primary creator on his team for most of the season. If the hornets just put the ball in kons hands more he would have better numbers and worse efficiency. They’re just in different situations being asked to play different roles. FWIW I think had cooper not gotten hurt he’d be the clear frontrunner.

I mean one other huge difference is net rating, where Kon has a huge advantage. Their counting stats are close enough that efficiency+ contributing meaningfully to winning as a rookie makes ROTY kon’s to lose imo. Also games played gap (12) is real

The “worse team with no help” partially explains the advantage he has in counting stats (which for what it’s worth is not that huge of a gap, 2 more points, 1 more assist/rebound, etc.)The fact that he missed games is actually the main thing hurting him. He was probably the favorite if he didn’t get hurt, but a 12 game gap while Kon continued to play great will hurt him.

As I’ve said elsewhere, this is not meant to disrespect Flagg who is a stud that will be a superstar and will be better than Kon long term. Just a reflection on the season they’ve both had.

I think the point is the voters use the stats instead of watching the games, evaluating the whole picture, etc. That’s lazy. There’s a lot more going on than just numbers and data.

I made the bet because it would be borderline impossible for Flagg to pass up what Kon has done this season in the last 10 games or so. It would take an irrational flip from voters to a weird ROTY criteria that they haven’t really used prior.
