And no, they didn’t create this rule solely for Embiid. Embiid played 66 games in his MVP season, so he would have qualified under this rule anyways.

Embiid never had this rule affect him a single time. He either made the cutoff, or missed way too many games to even be considered for end of season awards.

They didn’t make this rule for Embiid. The last time he made all nba without playing 65 games was 7 entire years ago and 6 at the time of the CBA. They made it because fans kept bitching about players sitting. Turns out it doesn’t really matter players are still going to sit when theyre injured regardless of games played rule and the amount of players taking free rest games is minimal. It obviously hurts players like Kawhi or Embiid more who have chronic injuries/pain they can’t play on but I don’t think it was targeted at them because the chance was never going to make those two play more games. It’s a dumb rule because it takes it out of voters hands to decide if a player had enough impacted on the court to make up for games missed. Availability is the best ability only goes so far. There are teams Embiid or Jokic or Luka could drag to the playoffs in 62 games that other great players wouldn’t sniff the postseason with in 82. It’s unrepresentative of the league to not leave the door open for interpretation.

Because it seemed at the time as if it would cut down on load management that was clearly intended to put competition over entertainment and was leading to players sitting when they were perfectly healthy or when they could avoid disadvantageous matchups.

But now the top 5 players this year have all looked like they might be penalized by this, so people are updating their thinking to account for the fact that the modern game just causes too many soft tissue injuries for the highest usage players.

• Luka will finish at 64.
• Cade will finish at 64.
• Wemby will need to play 4 of the remaining 5 games to hit 65 - it’ll likely happen, but if it doesn’t, we’re going to punish his transcendent season?
• Same for Jokic; he needs to play 4 of the last 5 to hit 65.
• Shai is the only one who will hit between 66 and 70 games of the entire top 5, and that’s because the injury that hit him happened right before the All-Star Break and gave him more time to rehab without ongoing games than his peers.

If a rule is heavily impacting all of your best players, reexamine the rule instead of throwing up your hands and saying “well people thought they wanted this!”
