9 players who made All-Defense/All-NBA last year are not eligible for postseason awards this season
Anthony Edwards (All-NBA 1st)
Giannis Antetokounmpo (All-NBA 1st)
Cade Cunningham (All-NBA 3rd)
LeBron James (All-NBA 2nd)
Jalen Williams (All-NBA 3rd)
Stephen Curry (All-NBA 2nd)
Ivica Zubac (All Defense 2nd)
Jayson Tatum (All-NBA 1st)
Tyrese Haliburton (All-NBA 3rd)
Two of these were players who admittedly should have been ruled out from the get-go with Tatum and Haliburton having their respective tears/surgeries. Frankly, it’s a surprise that Tatum is playing this season at all.
Of note for the players with a shaky standing this year, Victor Wembanyama can only miss 3 of the 5 remaining games for the Spurs to be handed DPoY qualify for postseason accolades. Cade can technically still make it but he’d have to play all of the Pistons remaining games after tonight since he’s been ruled out of Thursday’s Timberwolves/Pistons bout.
As an aside but can we…you know…get a 3rd All-Defense team? If the NBA is going to say defense matters then make it matter as an accolade with more players being recognized for impeccable impact on that end of the floor.
