Other teams are watching and learning. We’re gonna see a lot of this shit in the playoffs man. The shit I see with Wemby is what I remember seeing with prime Shaq and Curry. The strategy is legit foul as much as possible and know they can’t call them all.

The only reason this goes multiple times a game, is because it doesn’t get called. If draymond does this twice, and gets called for it twice, he doesn’t do it a third time.
I hate it because there are patterns here. You get away with it every so often, it’s all part of the game. You do it recklessly AND systematically in a sport with technology assist and appeals processes, then why even have rules?

Certainly makes it hard in this era not to at least entertain fixing/rigging conspiracies. Or at minimum that the league/refs intentionally put their thumb on the scale to allow games to stay close when, if officiated correctly, would otherwise not be.
The most unpopular opinion in sports here, but I genuinely wish they would add more refs. I know, I know “these guys already suck, and they would cheat!” There would definitely have to update the rules and how the game is officiated, And how officials are officiated even. But could you imagine the accountability if there was one rep assigned per player? There would be no more off ball fouls, screens would get called properly, there would be almost no excuses except just straight up being bad.
It would never happen, but you’re correct. All the small annoying genuinely game altering “cheats” would be seriously minimised if a ref constantly looked. The ref misses this play on Wemby, because he’s focused on trying to watch for a shooting foul. He would have to be insanely alert to be able to catch draymond in this case
The most amusing thing about refs being awful, is they are better at their job than 95% of people are at theirs. It’s a brutally hard job, and no matter how many calls you get, the focus is exclusively on the ones missed.
It’s genuinely an incredibly tough job they’ve been given, and that’s part of why I want to get more of them, to give each less responsibility.
100% the game needs more refs. Look at football, they have so many refs, each assigned to an area or set of players on the field. That’s how basketball needs to go.
How about a virtual sky ref that calls all the out of bounds, 3 second violations, backcourt violations, last second shots, and things that are one way or the other, nothing with any judgment involved.

Remember early in the season when they called a lot of touch fouls and everyone was complaining about how many stoppages and fouls and free throws there were? “No one came to watch the ref!” I don’t think anyone really stopped, they just complained the other way enough eventually the refs gave up.
I think it’s a difference though.
A touch foul is easy to do by mistake, and it ends up being a “judgement call” by the ref. Where it isn’t necessarily obviously or consistently a foul. And it’s a very small thing where you don’t think it necessarily impacts the game a lot

“They can’t call them all” also means you are intentionally not playing in the spirit of the game. Play NFL instead and you can tackle people all you want.
Also would annoy me is all you’d hear about is the foul discrepancy. Doesn’t matter if it’s the right call, just go to the box score. Complain about discrepancy of fouls or FTs.

Given the (I hope?) lack of experience with executing, good chance they fuck up and kill him in the hanging or drawing stages which are really 1-2 person jobs. Since there is no provision in the rulebook for fouling a dead man, I don’t see how the refs could call more than 2 fouls in thatcase.

There’s a difference between flopping and foul baiting/selling contact. If a player gets fouled and decides to sell the contact..then you can stop that by simply not fouling him.
If a player drives into the paint and throws himself to the ground without anyone touching him (flopping) then there’s nothing you could do against that. Its unethical and unsportsmanlike.

They should have a fourth ref sitting at the scorer’s table who would constantly be in contact with the replay centre and can be told “Hey, Green has pulled Wemanyama’s arm three times now, relay it to the refs so they can pay closer attention to it.” or similar stuff.

Off ball movement is literally 10x what it was. Sure, some of this is because the NBA stopped calling illegal screens, and that’s a big part of it, but a lot of it is just advancements in scheme, athleticism, conditioning.
Yes, certain things are less physical now than they were in prior generations. But defense now is asked to do so, so much more. A modern team would run those teams out of the gym.
Even players from the 90s acknowledge that defense is harder to play these days. That’s their biggest complaint.
I feel like something really important is that in the past being great on the offensive end meant being really athletic and having a good post game alongside being able to handle hand-checking but nowadays being a good offensive player is strictly about how good you’re at essentially ignoring the defender, whether it be through just shooting over them, handles, playmaking etc
Offense is just so much more freeform than defense where all you can do is try to read your opponent. It’s like playing a form of Rock Paper Scissors where your opponent only has to win once but you have to win multiple times in a row
