There was a period where too much rebounding was usually a sign you were out of touch with the modern game.

If you were dominating on the boards it meant you were too slow to adapt. It meant you had an old-school interior big man. You weren’t spacing the floor well enough and you weren’t giving enough attenion to transition defence. You also likely weren’t very good at switching PnRs defensively.

There was a couple of years where all the top rebounding teams were in the lottery and most of the top contenders were only mediocre rebounders at best. You wanted to be good enough to hold your own, but no better than that. The top rebounding teams had big men like Andre Drummond. The mid teams had bigs like Al Horford.

But now teams are finding ways to do both.

For example, Boston is a top rebounding team, but they’ve still got a very modern approach to the game. Our team uses the threat of offensive rebounding to slow down transition opportunities (if you rebound well, it’s harder for the other team to leak out early). Luka Garza can get the offensive board and he can shoot. We also get a lot of rebounds from our perimeter players, which makes it easier to switch on screens (giving up rebounds was always a big weakness of switching).

It’s a tough one though.

Vuc is without a doubt the more talented big man over Garza, but Garza plays a crucial role in our team’s identity.

Normally the stars define how the team plays, but this season our team’s identity has really been defined by the consistent hard work of our role players. We have this talented core and then a supporting cast of shock troopers who catch teams off guard with how hard they play.

Our starters are talented, but then you have that first substitution where guys like Scheierman, Gonzalez and Garza come in and instantly start fighting for loose balls and getting under everyone’s skin. They’re obviously a lot more limited than the supporting cast we had last year, but they’re able to just brute force the team into winning positions.

I do worry giving Garza DNPs so Vucevic can play undermines that identity a bit. It’s not like Vuc was playing soft either, but Garza was arguably the hardest working role player in the league when we first traded for Vuc, and it’s a big call to give someone like that DNPs.

It was pretty egregious, but at the same time…fuck the Heat.
