JJ Redick holding back tears as Pelinka plays a video of his sons congratulating him for 100 wins as a coach
So many of you clowns were rooting for him to fail because he was a podcaster. I wanted him to fail because I hate the Lakers. (Nothing against JJ) We are not the same.
Idk how anyone who watched his podcast expected him to outright suck. His BBIQ is amazing, and his ability to talk to and connect with players on a technical level is special. Honestly even if the Lakers sucked the last 2 years I wouldn’t put it mostly on him.
My favorite take of his was the reaction to the Haliburton trade. He admitted he doesn’t care about counting stats, and heavily indexes on all-in-one metrics, which was very refreshing to see. Most podcasters brush aside the all-in-one stats, and instead focus on counting stats. And in hindsight, he nailed the analysis:
JJ Redick in 2022: The Kings just traded their best player (Haliburton). Yes, (De’Aaron) Fox averages more points, but all of the advanced stats, it’s been Tyrese… That is a fact. I don’t give a fuck about how many points a guy averages, that doesn’t mean shit.

Tell us how you really feel, JJ.
No lies detected 😭
He might be my favorite Sixers role player of all time. I got sentimental when he said his biggest career regret was leaving the Sixers and signing with New Orleans
The DHO with him and Embiid in the 2019 Sixers-Raps series was one of those legitimately impossible to guard actions. A guy with his game sense and shooting ability is always such a threat to have on the floor, I always really admired his game too.
Nurse stealing it and using the super charged version with Maxey has been a sight to behold
Dho?
Dribble hand off
Thx
A defensively inclined salacious ne’er-do-well. A D ho.
(Dribble hand-off)
Considering he averaged 17 and 18 points per game that’s a pretty damn good role player.
You like him more than Eric Snow? Or Mutumbo?
I was barely conscious back then lol
PEPE SANCHEZ?!
Does Eric Snow move you? Pepe Sanchez?
Eric Snow reminds me of NBA Live 2004, the first basketball game I played so yes
Or Kyle Korver!
I remember he hit a big 3 for you guys in the playoffs to force OT or something, and the fanbase really seemed like like JJ in Philly.
I thought he might do OK for the reasons you mentioned, but after seeing Steve Nash in Brooklyn, I think it was fair for people to have some caution around how a former player/first-time coach might handle a team with established star players, especially someone like LeBron.
Them at least publicly having a good relationship made it seem different than how KD and Kyrie talked about Nash, but we’ve also seen LeBron relationships go sour if the team isn’t playing well, like with Westbrook.
That Nets team would have won that year if they were healthy lol.
I didn’t, but it’s worth noting being a coach is so many different jobs in one that it can be quite easy to fail.
There are people like me who doubted a guy could go straight from TV to Head Coach with no steps in between. Like, just the everyday things of, learning how to film study as a coach, setting up practice schedules, media training, etc.
I suppose guys like Kerr set the precedent aleady.
He was an NBA player for 15 years. Played for multiple franchises, was a role player so always had to fight for his spot. He wasn’t particularly athletic and those types of players have to find other ways in the book in order to stand out. He played for Coach K in college. People actually underestimate the learning curve he’s been under. For all the head coach inexperience, he already said in his first interview how he asked to be surrounded with all the best assistant coaches but a lot of those assistant guys have never been had an NBA playoff career playing next to stars. Both things matter. Experience but also relevant experience.
In his final few years, he was an obsessive hard worker, always around the coaches and trying to get everyone on the roster on the same page. People mock these type of guys as “teacher’s pets”.
He was also an intelligent player so it’s not like he started studying film after his NBA career ended. He’s much more closer to someone like Chris Paul and if CP3 all of a sudden decided he’s going to coach after sitting on TV for 2 years, no one is going to bat an eye.
I used to hate Reddick because of his Duke persona but on his podcast he seemed to regularly communicate esp in his interviewa an attitude that learning from smarter people and looking at things with nuance was important. He hired a pretty established supporting staff overall iirc. Nate McMillan and Scott Brooks were reasonably successful as HCs that seemed professional and well liked in their tenure. They had their flaws but imo those hires demonstrated JJ knew there were things he needed to be mentored in as a HC. People meme Scott Brooks for his “secrit plays” and I’m certainly not a fan of his from an Xs and Os perspective but there’s other aspects of being a coach that he probably got underrated for. The other aspects of being a HC that gets ignored abd dismissed by fans.
Also you just have to watch a minute of him talking basketball to realize he’s got that competitive insanity
I loveeee when the Lakers are up double digits at halftime and you can tell in the halftime coach interview that JJ is still pissed about how the Lakers are playing.
Well that’s the thing too I went into it expecting him to suck a little bit just because of the roster construction I didn’t think he was going to be able to get very far with it and so I automatically assumed it wasn’t going to be all on him anyway. Even after getting Luka I thought it was going to take at least a year or two to get some pieces around him that would put them at this point
I wanted him to respectfully fail cause I miss his damn podcast
Nothing against Steve Nash cause he’s doing great too, but Mind the Game was a little better with JJ as host
JJ has great charisma and delivery, which is why he will always have a job in the NBA somewhere.
Not to knock on Steve Nash, but you can see how much more enthusiastic JJ is when talking about topics, even if they feel the same about it. You really need that energy for long form content
Why you gotta compare white guys to white guys?
I miss him opposing Stephen A Smith
This is cathartic.
That thread when he was hired and people were going off on him on top of Chuck’s fat ass (now skinny ass), saying he can’t wait to see when he’s going to get fired, so then they’ll see who will be blamed was peak bitterness.
He’s a very good coach, now there’s a need to go longer in the playoffs, but he’s off to a fantastic start.
The hate was because the dude had already pivoted into a super successful start in media after playing.
That’s not good enough for you and you need to pivot to being a coach too?
Basically, jealousy.
I hate the Lakers and was never a JJ fan, but Ive been rooting for him just because of how many people wanted him to fail.
Podcaster haters are a respected profession
Facts. I enjoyed his podcasts especially when he was starting out and checking folks on ESPN.
Hated that the Lakers signed him cause it showed a sign of competence. Even worse that he landed Luka.
Too many were focused on the podcaster part and not his 15+ years playing in the league and only missing the playoffs like once in his life.
I’m guessing most of this sub is too young to remember how hated he was at Duke. Haven’t seen something like it since.
hall of fame ncaa villain. he was so much fun to hate
Yeah Grayson Allen was hated and much more of an asshole than JJ but didn’t even reach the levels of hate that JJ had.
honestly I respect it.
Co-signed.
(I’m a Nugget)
I was just thinking of this. The Lakers are by far my least favorite team in the NBA but it’s hard not to respect this guy and the job he’s doing.
Oh I would’ve thought it was because he played for Duke
I kinda wanted him to fail as a coach because I really liked learning Xs and Os from his podcast. Thanks to him I track my screen-assists during games at the Y. (No, not really. But maybe?)
This is the shit I come here for. Hate on baby
For Duke + Laker guy, he’s so fucking likeable I hate it.
I was rooting for him to fail because he was one of very few excellent personalities in the media sphere and he robbed us of that
damn what did the Lakers do to you
Fair tbh
Ethical hate is always welcome in this house.
Meanwhile I wanted him to fail bc he was so good at Duke and I hated it. WE are not the same
i want him to fail because hes a douche
Why do you feel that he’s a douche?
I think JJ is underappreciated as coach. The lakers are 2 years in a row at 3rd place. He is doing his best on making them perform at thier best, despite the low energy effort the players put
Another coach would struggled much more with the same defensively mediocre roster. Like play in type of ranking.
He cares. He’s on their ass. I think it’s easy to forget that his learning curve has a lot of great coaches including Coach K. Even someone like Doc must’ve taught him a lot about ATO plays. He has never given up on this team, even when you’ve seen it all falling apart due to lack of communication. He puts them on the blaze regularly.
Most importantly, he wants to succeed here as a Lakers head coach much more than pleasing someone. His detractors said he got the job because of Lebron but you can tell he can say things Ham or Frank Vogel could never do so because he’s not worried about ingratiating himself to the players even with a lack of job security being this inexperienced.
He’s confident in his ability but also knew he needed to surround himself with more experienced assistant staff which has paid dividends. He’s done both the arm around the shoulder routine and been tough and demanding in public.
He has overachieved with this Lakers roster both years.
I don’t think that’s what a learning curve is but yes go off King.
At the very least he gets ZERO coty talk and theyre finally talking about him at all cuz the lakers are coming around. Theres been three teams, ad bron, luka off mavs at dealine, and now and they all played vastly different yet ohhh hes a podcaster, the dude house burnt down and matched phil in something, let him live
I don’t want him to get COTY. I love JJ and people get fired after that shit, the curse is real😬
I’m interested to see him in the playoffs this year - last year, it was obvious he was a phenomenal regular season coach (that roster performed far above its construction), and it was equally obvious he didn’t have the experience he needed in the playoffs (nor, again, to be clear, the team). I want to see what he learned from that this year.
Well, last year the roster was impossibly bad. People will point to keeping the starters in the entire damn game, but forget why lol. He would try to play Hayes and the guy would literally hit 3-5 fouls halfway through the damn quarter. They had no depth. Every single time they tried to rest the starters, the games collapsed. At some point there’s just not much you can do other than throw out the Hail Mary and hope for heroics.
Also AR was injured, LeBron was dealing with lingering injuries, Luka was sick and out of shape and coming off injury.
He probably could have done better but I don’t really think there was that much more to be done. Bad hand.
When they had to play Bron as Center against Gobert that was painful to watch
And, if your best defensive player was a 40 years old? Man…
Yeah, 100%, I’m not faulting him for not making it further - that the team was in the playoffs at all was to his credit. But I do think his style last year was that he was very Clever, and that doesn’t work in the playoffs, and I think he learned that during that run. Playoffs are different, and you could see the stress on him by the end.
I think our big issue was a lack of frontcourt depth alongside AR being injured. He really wasn’t the same player in the postseason and it was only weeks later we learned of his case of turf toe. Luka was effective but not in nearly as good a shape he is nowadays.
This team plays very differently from last year where adding the likes of Smart, Ayton, and Kennard have really transformed our rotations and possible lineups. I’m very excited to see how we perform in the postseason, this team is just firing on all cylinders and on a real roll right now. Not just wins, but with how free-flowing and simple they’re playing offensively with everyone knowing their role. Least confused Lakers team since the bubble.
I can’t imagine any of the other coaches available at the time doing any better
The last lakers coach to have back to back 50 win seasons was Phil Jackson.
Remember we had pockets
This guy actually into the full organization
I love him here and I’m sure he will last many years
Great great coach
I know Lakers fans appreciate him compared to what they had before in Darvin fucking Ham. It’s like having Jesus resurrected lol
He is the best coach we’ve had since Phil Jackson. I’m sure more weaknesses will be identifiable in time to nitpick, but he’s been much successful with his rosters than many of the other coaches we’ve had with superior teams.
He has been very adaptable with our roster constraints and winning 50 games back-to-back is better than every other coach since Phil aside from Vogel in the championship season. What he’s been able to do with minimal coaching experience is impressive as someone watching this team for 20+ years now.
Stop shooting so much! Lmao
lol anyone know who said that? Gotta be AR. That was hilarious
AR is Luka’s number one hater but also his number one fan.
lol its just the way dudes act when theyre bros like this. my best friends in life, we rip on each other like NUTS
ive told folks many times that youll know if i hate your guts when i treat you perfectly normal lol
Great friends will tear down any bullshit that might be propping us up. It results in giving each other a stronger foundation to continue to build on.
Reaves is the only one who wouldn’t be immediately waived after saying that
Yep it was AR
With all of the great individual performances this season, the guys absolutely balling out in the MVP race, we also should acknowledge how many incredible coaching jobs there have been this year.
Mazzulla, Lee, Bickerstaff, Mitch Johnson are just a few and JJ also should be in that list.
Can’t forget Jordan Ott
Dude is such a good coach
And obv Mark Daigneault but that’s obvious
The Suns have slowed down a bit, but Ott deserves recognition too. They were expected to be terrible this year and yet they’re competing.
Their rough stretch was mostly just a ridiculously tough road trip (they shouldn’t have lost to the Bucks at home though).
I think Kerr doesn’t get enough respect for rolling out half a dozen G Leaguers and having them look somewhat capable out there.
Warriors sub is funny. Like over 100 million in their cap is missing and some of them expect to be winning more than they are lol
I swear they always have the most random players on there team
It really is going to be difficult to figure out who’s CotY this year. There are so many good storylines, turnarounds, persevering through adversity. Celtics and Suns overperforming after offseason roster shakeups; Spurs, Detroit, Hornets turning around from bad prior seasons. Then you have Doc Rivers sitting in the corner blaming everyone but the mirror for Milwaukee’s woes.
Must be nice
STOP SHOOTING SO MUCH HAHAHAHAHA!
I can only imagine if Kobe’s teammates weren’t as terrified of him they would have said the same 😂
Austin in the back hating per usual 🤗
Luka’s #1 Hater & Fan 😂
You know things are going well if Pelinka shows up.
GO HARD ON THEM DUDES!
Hell of a ball club
Salute
DEFEND WITHOUT FOULLING
I had people try to convince me that Pockets the Clown was a scapegoat and better than JJ.
Pockets the Clown 👏😹
“We would have also accepted Darvin Ham-and-Cheese-Sandwich”
Some people were literally saying that this year in the Lakers sub lol.
Can’t imagine how off the rails things would’ve been if the Dan Hurly accepted the job. Obviously very happy Redick got the gig instead.
Hurley isn’t a NBA type coach and that’s just fine. He’s killing it where he is.
Hurley was always using the Lakers to get a pay raise imo
He’s a northeast coast lifer
I’m soooo happy for him! Was rooting for him to get the Lakers job and glad he’s killing it! Hope he has a long, successful career!
This is the kind of Lakers content I can get behind
AR: “stop shooting so much” 😂😂😂
That’s my podcaster
Honestly JJ gives off girl-dad energy. Surprised he has sons
why? cause he shows genuine emotion?
ate those tears up like a champ
You know the Lakers are doing well when Pelinka starts strutting around in front of the cameras in his leather jackets
I remember when people were hating on the JJ hire, and I do get it on some degree, but he’s proven a lot of the naysayers wrong. He’s a legit coach.
Immaculate vibes
A lot of people expected JJ to fail but so far it seems like hes well suited to a coaching role
I bleed Carolina blue but god damn if this man hasn’t earned my respect. I hate how good of a guy and coach he is lol
gotta mean a lot after the house fire, dude knows what’s important
One of the main things that has made jj successful in his endeavors in life is that you can tell that he cares alot. He cares about winning, but he also cares about the process, he cares about the people.
Oh no, the vibes are looking solid in LA
I miss his podcast man, atleast we got Mind the game now with Nash n Bron
Congratulations, having seen Lakers games you can tell JJ is passionate and really enjoys being a coach.
How can you hate this org and this team?
It’s pretty easy, actually.
Man they got some good good vibes going on in LA
Don’t think you can really judge someones coaching skill until they have a team that doesn’t have the GOAT and a top 10 offensive player of all time not even in his prime yet. Its why Spo is considered the best coach in the league.
Just 1291 to go
Good presentation FrankenLowe
Like mana from heaven
Stop shooting so much is hilarious
Team chemistry is at such a good place going into the playoffs. Some good wins to end the season and this’ll be the most hyped I’ve been for a chip run since 2020.
Kids these days never played w him on ncaa march madness 04
Higher win percent (.633) than Popovich (.628). CROWN. THE. MAN
People were clowning the JJ hire but I’m glad my favorite podcaster is killing it
That Panda Daytona 💪🏽
happy for him. hes a great coach and should stay
Just a podcaster right
Lot of hype on JJ, Lets wait until the playoffs. We saw what happened last year
The vibes are immaculate. As a Lakers fan, this is great to see heading into the playoffs.
Man, I’m so happy for JJ. I started listening to his pods way back, loved Mind the game, and I was kind of worried for him when he got the job. He’s been awesome, hope they win it with Luka someday.
me too
Damn Rui hitting 5000 points surprised me
Nah that’s Rob Lowe not pelinka
Pelinka looks like they smashed Rob Lowe and Zac Efron together in the LHC
That’s my coach!!
I’m biased from having enjoyed his podcast for a long time but I really like JJ as a person. I don’t think a lot of people would have been able to walk into that locker room and immediately have Lebron’s respect, and being someone that Luka also trusts is a big reason why they’re here despite all the struggles they’ve had. For a guy whose only coaching experience before this was coaching his kid’s team he has really excelled
I deadass thought that was Rob Lowe in the thumbnail.
i thought he would crash and burn when he was first hired tbh he’s done a great job
Ugh my fandom and my fatherhood are battling right now
Still can’t believe the guy from parks and rec is a GM.
We’ve had ups and downs of course but even 5 games in with JJ as our coach was enough to convince me that he was an upgrade over Ham. I also liked the fact that we had two former head coaches on the staff as senior assistant coaches to help steady him with the day to day.
JJ was a good hire and I’m happy to call him our coach
This guy gives a shit so much, and yeah, sometimes he’s a little on edge, but as someone who can be the same way, I get him.
People forget he’s been through hell and back after losing his home in the fires last year. I’ll always root for this guy on a personal level. The league is that much better with him in it.
Congrats to JJ. I do truly enjoy how he does things. He could be an insufferable asshole but he leads the Lakers with class while managing egos
Is that a Daytona on his wrist?
Everyone clowned the JJ hire and now his own players are getting emotional about playing for him. That says everything you need to know. The guy went from podcast host to 100 wins in his first season coaching a team nobody thought would work. Wild.
When I heard J.J. was joining the Lakers as a head coach, I thought it was a bad career move. He had a budding media career, was calling finals games, had a podcast with LeBron, and it seemed like just another coach who was going to get put through the media car wash cycle that the Lakers are capable of. With the Luka trade and the presence of Austin Reaves and some good offseason moves, he’s proved that he can be one of the better coaches in the league, as long as he’d like to. Great basketball mind, very interesting person. Big fan of J.J.
But but but r/nba told me he only got hired because of LeOwner and he’s just a stupid podcaster that didn’t pick up anything his entire life playing basketball?
Aw this was really nice.
JJ and Marcus Smart are dragging this team across the finish line
As long as the Lakers don’t draw Minnesota in the first round this year, next year is do or die for JJ and Pelinka.
Good example of the same pronoun problem, headline reads (to me) as if Pelinka’s sons made the video!
Good vibes. Thanks Rob.
And Fuck Nico
I’ll admit that I was wrong on how he would do. Thought that he would have a similar experience as Steve Nash and that he also needed more experience as a coach (at any level but especially at the NBA level).
Luka should be MVP and JJ should be coach of the year. Dude has had a fantastic year. His defensive schemes have turned Luka in one of the better defenders in the league, even with a ton of injuries the team has been looking great (except for a like 1-2 week run), exceeding expectations as a team, and is doing one of the hardest things for a coach to do. Turn a decently good team into a top team. Its easy to be a bottom feeder and get 5 years of top picks and change a season, but to be a middling team without draft help, to turn around like the Lakers is some real shit.
I hate Duke I hate Reddicks full head like of Hair But, that was moving.
Bro is coaching one of the hardest franchises and honestly he’s doing a great job and this is well deserved
After his kid said your a great dad, Me: 🥹
Imagine if Ant Edwards had a similar recognition with all his kids in the video.
If LeBron Raymone James is the third best option, then a scarecrow could coach the team into the playoffs.
He is the best coach the Lakers have had since Byron Scott, gotta give credit to him where credit is due.
I’ll never like JJ seems like such a smug full of himself guy
12 year old me would be so pissed at me for loving JJ now. I used to dream of JJ breaking his leg whenever Duke played Maryland
Raising his boys to be Lakers fans. What a piece of shit dad.
Such a wholesome moment.
The league somehow, someway is always going to prop up their golden child in the Lakers. JJ is a part of a larger play connecting Bron and Luka. Retirement tour finna go crazy.
You must get your tinfoil from Costco business
On vacation with the fam and mom accidentally bought plastic wrap instead of foil for grilling.
LEMME GET SOME OF THAT
Suddenly, a lot of you think he’s a good coach as well and not just a podcaster.
Ya’ll are weak.
Who jizzed
Dude is pompous. I met JJ back during his playing days with the Magic… was a season ticket holder. Biggest tool I have ever met. Vince Carter and Pietrus were the absolute best, JJ was the complete opposite.
The Lakers can hang another bogus banner from their rafters.
i mean…. i guess.
Lol lakers aren’t winning anything with lebron on the team. Lebron and Luka aren’t playing defense in the playoffs I can’t wait to see how bad it’ll be.
