Wembanyama now has the 4th most 40-point games (7) by a Spurs player, passing Manu Ginóbili
Maybe we’re not talking about George Gervin enough
Iceman was a PROBLEM
Coldest nickname ever, the Iceman
Excuse me, that’s Caleb Williams.
Honestly pretty dumb of him to try to trademark the name iceman given the current state of the country ngl. Also pretty dumb cus no one even calls him that, so it’s extra cringe
He was KD before KD haha
It’s crazy people talk about the Spurs going “Wemby, Duncan, Robinson” and always leave Gervin out.
I mean we are now that he’s tryna stop Caleb Williams from trademarking Iceman.
Edit: Y’all so goofy & sensitive lmaooooo! Not one of you was consistently bringing him up in casual sports convo til recently. Whether you think he’s in the right or not (which I think he is) facts are facts.
Well clearly he has a basis for it. Nails can have it when he hits 5 first team all pro teams.
As he fucking should, fuck Caleb Williams and his team for that. Embarrassing
Yeah let’s just steal the best nicknames instead of being creative for a second.
I’ll be Any “Bad Porn” Question.
Chuck Liddell would like a word
Very different sports. Also I don’t think he ever tried to trademark it and I think that’s George’s biggest hang up. You can run with the name all you want informally but I think he knows he’d damn near be erased from sports history if he let it go down legally without a fight.
Iceman one of the most underrated players ever
David Robinson too for that matter. He was overshadowed by Prime Hakeem, but so would any other big in NBA history outside of maybe Jabbar/Wilt, IMO.
Most recent Quadruple Double in NBA history
Ya Caleb is nice
Who TF is Caleb
Definitely. I loved how him and Maverick came together by the end of the season.
You thought you were cooking with this one? Maybe he can go cry to his mom again when he doesn’t get his stolen nickname
Huh?
🤣🤣🤣 bozo
Aldridge is underrated during his short tenure with the Spurs. Will never forget his 56 points against the Thunder in 2019, he was literally everywhere despite elite defense played on him
that elbow/top of the key jumper of his was one of the most automatic shots i’ve ever seen, even if by the time he got to us he was pretty slow on defense, he and Demar still played their asses off to give us a good show while they were here
Aldridge and Derozan both also meaningfully revamped their games in San Antonio - Derozan became much more of a facilitator and Aldridge doubled his previous caree high season for 3PA. They deserve all the praise in the world for their time on the Spurs.
It wasn’t really much of a change for Aldridge, really. He was pretty much the best in the league at midrange jumpers, he just needed to change his mindset slightly to take that extra step or two backward.
Should have stayed in PDX with Dame.
He wanted to play with Tim Duncan. He didnt just want ring chase thats his idol
It goes beyond that, he and Dame have admitted that the media circus trying to force a passing if the torch eroded their relationship, and that that was the deciding factor in his leaving PDX. They eventually talked it though
Man, the NBA really is a soap opera for men.
He got fucked over by Kawhi but outside that, he seemed to really enjoy his change of scenery. Also got to hang out with the Big 3.
He should have, but our GM was absolutely awful and mishandled the situation. I can’t blame Aldridge for leaving but if he had Pritchard or Cronin at GM instead of Olshey, I think LMA is a Blazer for life.
Anyone else shocked Timmy only got to 40 five times in like 20 seasons?
If you want to include the postseason, he had 9!
1400 reg season games = 5
251 playoff games = 4
You could always count on Timmy to turn it up a couple notches in the playoffs. I’m excited to see if wemby can do the same which is nuts to even consider.
I have a feeling we’re gonna see some ridiculous shit from Wemby in the playoffs, it’s gonna be like Luka’s debut in the bubble
idk, eventually yeah, but wemby hasn’t played intense playoff basketball while being hard focused by an opposing defense, i know he’s been training as much as he can for it but it hits all first-time playoff stars hard, luckily he has a great team around him so they can’t just double/triple team him constantly like they can some teams
I feel that he’s gonna want to make a statement in the first game, he’s no stranger to high stakes ball and he’s the type of guy to take those sentiments seriously. Obviously nba playoffs are a different beast but my expectations are sky high for the man
no, he’s not really a dominant scorer nor was it the team’s philosophy to have a dominant scorer. it’s kinda the same now with the current team
The Spurs lost his career high scoring game, and he famously (in Spurs lore anyway) decided that scoring wasn’t how he wanted to devote his energy in a game as his primary focus since he didn’t think it’d be the best way for his team to win games
I wish more nba fans understood this about the Spurs. Popovich’s philosophy was to not just have one player go out there and dominate the game, he preached about teamwork endlessly to the point that he made the mantra “Pound the rock” the Spurs official mantra
For those that don’t know the mantra it goes like this:
“When nothing seems to help, I go and look at a stonecutter hammering away at his rock perhaps a hundred times without as much as a crack showing in it. Yet at the hundred and first blow it will split in two, and I know it was not that blow that did it, but all that had gone before.” - Jacob Riis
In this context, it’s not just one guy doing it all for the team, it’s everyone contributing. That’s why the Spurs even now have the lowest minutes distributed between their starters, only Fox and Castle average more than 30 min a game and just barely.
Also, the Spurs have that mantra/quote on a wall in their practice facility, they live by that through and through
no, he’s not really a dominant scorer
I mean he was, but “4 down” was successful because Timmy became a really good passer out of the double/triple. Being focused on getting the open shot took away a lot of points from him, but made them a more dominant “boring” force with “4 Down”
Teams won’t double if he wasn’t dominant. If they gave the hockey assist, Timmy would have more stats showing how valuable he was to getting that 3pt shot
That was my first thought.
no, not really. he wasn’t some all-time great offensive player
System offense player. That bronze medal he led as back to back mvp is not held against him enough. Im prepared for the downvotes from TD stans blaming rookie bron and melo for that fat L
There’s a reason Kobe was always viewed as better than him. Not only was his game nor he not flashy, he didn’t even put up monster performances like that.
Yup very true, not saying I agree with the sentiment but this is exactly why Kobe was seen as better than Duncan back then. That and he would basically go off on the spurs during the playoffs
Iceman is underrated among today’s fans. He’s a four-time scoring champ.
3 iconic nicknames ahead of him on the list: Ice Man, The Admiral, Spoon Man
Not sure how many doughboys fans are on this sub lol
I mean, The Alien is not bad either. Ice man has to be my favorite though
I had 0 clue that Manu had the most out of the old Spurs Big 3. Not what I would’ve expected.
NBA Monster George “Iceman” Gervin
I know he wasn’t the most prolific scorer but the fact that Tim Duncan only had 5 40 point games in his career is WILD
Tim Duncan has as many 40 point games as he has rings that’s crazy
How good was prime George Gervin?
67?!
r/NBASpurs
?? Its a post about the nba lol
From a thunder fan in 2026 no less. Lakers entitlement vibes
entitlement is posting team related shit to the general sub. that’s what lakers and spurs fans do
“Why does rnba hate our fanbase” -thunder fans on reddit
no.. it’s a post about a spurs player compared to another spurs player.
this is prime r/nbaspurs fare
Cool let’s ditch all the SGA stuff that gets posted too then, fair trade?
the minute you see a thunder fan post comparing sga to other thunder players, you can complain.
dela?
Worst fanbase in basketball, how is that even possible. Nobody cares about OKC and we still hate you guys
indeed. spurs fans cant tell that this information is really only relevant to spurs fans.
so deluded.
Sorry y’all aren’t a storied franchise but we are very important to this league and its history. Showing history of the Spurs is still in the criteria of the NBA bozo, just like all your little SGA highlights of him shooting free throws in here
