Back in the day you’d only be able to see it on funimation, Crunchyroll, illegal anime sites or if you were watching Toonami/Adult Swim
Some of the biggest pirating sites were shut down and the main streaming platforms saw an opportunity to fill the demand and anime just simultaneously smashed through mainstream while trying to appeal to the avid fans.
Crunchyroll getting every single simulcast anime every season was such a golden age. I stopped watching anime when eventually there were 4 different streaming services fighting for simulcasts. The rare times I have an anime I want to watch I just pirate now although I have heard from friends that Crunchy kinda regained their dominance because everyone else died.

True. Anime has been steadily growing in popularity in the west since the late 90’s/early 2000’s, but also animation in general is more mainstream now. These kids also grew up on stuff like Avatar: The Last Airbender, but also the last decade or so has had a ton of animated shows in various genres being marketed to adults (Stuff like Archer, Bojack Horsemen, Invincible, Arcane, etc. come to mind.)
Fuck I’m old, back in the day, you’d wake up at 5am on Sunday to watch Sailor Moon.

Gen Z is anyone born from 1997-2012. Half of Gen Z is able to drink now. Gen Z accounts for 20% of the population but only makes up 4% of alcohol sales in the US. 10% of the population is Gen Z who are of legal drinking age though. You’d expect Gen Z to be around 10% of alcohol sales in the US right now maybe more since the silent generation is getting too old to drink without health risks now.
I’m a Gen Z but not from the US. I’m wondering if vaping is like replacing it.
I think there’s generally robust data to suggest alcohol consumption is down with millennials and gen Zs.
The negatives of alcoholism is more well established, and consequently less tolerated in the younger generation. (especially in the workplace and public)
Alcohol is also more expensive now, with economics working against younger generations, it’s no wonder consumption is lower compared with older gens.
Didn’t stop the generations before them from drinking underage. Many Gen Zers are also mid 20’s now

i’m 27 and most people i know drink, but i do know a subset of gen z people who don’t at all. it’s probably more of a bimodal thing where people either drink semi-regularly or don’t at all, with little in the middle of the distribution.
I’m 23 and drink infrequently when I’m at a party or out and about, as do some of my friends but a few flat out just don’t. Not even for any particular reason they just don’t see a reason. A lot of people my age usually smokers of some variety though

I feel like stuff like animation being treated as the same level as live action has been the norm for awhile now. I feel like in America we always had the Simpsons but once family guy and American Dad became mainstream successful adult shows it became difficult for adults to justify why animation= children.
Now you have shows like Invincible that are basically marketed and treated the same way a live action show would be.
I mean if you think about yugioh/pokemon as anime and realize pretty much everyone grew up watching those it’s not that crazy

Yeah Im a millenial and I manage a restaurant, so naturally a lot of my employees are gen Z. We can talk about a lot of stuff, like millenial music is popular right now for example. We can talk sports. When it comes to television and movies though it gets tough. Most of em consume mostly anime. Even when they try to talk about anime that was popular in the 90s and early 2000s I have to answer “oh yeah I heard of that, my weird gay friend liked that, I never watched it.”
I think Covid played a big part, prior it was still more niche and you would get ostracized for it from time to time. During covid a lot of people ended up watching anime since they didn’t have much else to do and it just because more mainstream/socially acceptable. It’s kind of rarer in my experience to know people who don’t watch anime as opposed to those who do

The One Piece creator has creative control over the series. He wants the current series to end at a specific arc in the anime. The show runners and the cast knows where it’ll end, but they’re not sharing that info right now.
