I haven’t dug into the details much, but beyond just being a small market I think it has a lot to do with the arena situation, leasing it and sharing revenue, who is taking on the cost of the renovation, etc.

The expected top bidder in Seattle (bigger market, more corporate money) also controls the arena since they privately funded all of the renovations they only share a small amount with the city. They’ll be able to get more because there’s more money to make in that situation.

New funding that was passed for the stadium revamp is 100% public money with the team not needing to pay any rent…not sure about revenue but theres a group in portland who feel the team got too good of a deal. Some portland city council members commented anonymously later that they were told their political careers would be effected if they spoke up against the blazers

Portland is definitely on the low end of NBA franchise value. There are franchises worth significantly more than $7B, and franchises worth significantly less. I would say $7B for Vegas/Seattle is pretty on point considering you’re always going to pay extra for expansion.

Has made good choices in front office and coach in Carolina and the Hurricanes are one of the better franchises in the league. Brind’amour (their coach) is among the leaders in win % as coach since taking over. Carolina does not have a title under Dundon but they have been to 3 conference finals in 8 years.

Only thing I remember was an athletic poll of agents who labelled him as the worst owner by some distance:

What’s clear from agents’ comments is that this isn’t really about any specific business decision or issues with spending (a more common sentiment the last time we did this exercise in 2022). It’s more about Dundon’s communication and leadership style, with several describing him as overly involved.

“I don’t know how he has the time or the energy. He’s the de facto GM,” one agent said.

“A lot of people in our business hate it that Tom is so f—ing involved, and he is basically the manager and he has a lot of strong opinions, too, and he’s not afraid to tell all of us privately those opinions.”

“His GMs and assistant GMs … have to ask him permission for anything,” added another.

The idea that the owner’s involvement is affecting the culture was raised several times.

“They’ve got some smart people there, but you just feel their culture by not even working there, just being around it. And it’s not a great one.”
