Yes he needs help but I will never understand this thing of having empathy until someone actually opens up with the difficult stuff, and then telling them they need to deal with it in private. Obviously a confession or admission to the public isn’t everything that he needs to do to fix himself, and his full healing shouldn’t be totally done in public, but the instant shunning the world does after claiming to be empathetic to abuse just makes it all seem like we’re patting ourselves on the back for helping someone or valuing their healing and happiness while not actually accepting that there’s tough things that come with that. Could be off base though.

Not that my two cents matters at all, but as a gay guy I saw his video going on a homophobic rant and my first thought was he seems so mentally unwell that I find that more distressing to see than anything else. There’s so much to unpack there with him being a victim of sexual abuse/getting deep into religion/homophobia. It’s a dark situation. He needs help.

Childhood trauma can manifest in adulthood as a personality disorder. (Not all personality disorders are caused by trauma) but there might be a connection here. People want to be understood. Also when you’re going through this stuff you’re not thinking clearly. I definitely overshared at times, which very much negativity impacted my life. You might think it would bring about a lot of shame, of course it does, but when you’ve been through a lot of pain you just start to not give a fuck anymore. Most people don’t know what he went through, they see the comments he makes and rightfully get upset but don’t know the context. So, they’re not really demonizing for the pain and trauma he had… Second, plenty of people make comments like he did without pain and trauma, and plenty of people with pain and trauma don’t act like he does. Pain and trauma doesn’t excuse bad behavior, it helps us understand it and helps us have empathy but we don’t need to tolerate bad behavior either. Finally, he admitted that he abused his wife so, it’s not 100% right to say people are acting like he did something worse than he did.

This isn’t to say he should be demonized (he shouldn’t) but we shouldn’t let him off the hook either. Not letting him off the hook, however, doesn’t mean insulting him and I think most comments I’m seeing are saying this is a fucked up situation and that he needs help.

It’s wild that Reddit and other echo chambers will harp on “mental health support” and “believing all victims” and “men need to express themselves”….. And here we have a guy that has been and is obviously going through a lot. Yet, because he made a judgmental rant in the midst of what is more than likely a psychotic break, they demonize him. As if that is supposed to help his mental health somehow.
