Wembanyama’s last 17 blocks led to a Spurs possession or “How efficient Wembanyama’s blocks are ?”
During the last 3 Spurs games, Wembanyama made 17 blocks, that’s 5.67 blocks per game. Not too shabby. And all those blocks were recovered either by Wembanyama himself or a teammate resulting in a change of possession.
Block recovery after a Wembanyama has been discussed and lauded, but I wanted to check a little bit more. So, here a recap of all 52 blocks by Wembanyama in March 2026. (source: screwball.com)
Memphis: 7⁄7
Miami: 5⁄5
Indiana: 5⁄5
Phoenix: 0/1 (rebound Phoenix)
Sacramento: 1⁄1
LA Clippers: 2⁄4 (out of bounds + rebound Clippers)
Charlotte: 2⁄4 (Charlotte rebounds ending in a shot clock violation 2 seconds later - rebound Charlotte)
Boston: 2⁄2
Houston: 3⁄4 (swatted out of bounds)
LA Clippers: 3⁄4 (rebound Clippers)
Detroit: 2⁄5 (3 Detroit rebounds, however 2 of those ended up in immediate missed put back with possession Spurs)
Philadelphia: 3⁄6 (swatted out of bounds + 2 rebounds Sixers)
NY Knicks: 3⁄4 (rebounds Knicks)
Total: 38⁄52, that’s 73% of blocks leading to a direct Spurs possession.
The discussion about Wembanyama’s recovery often arise because people say he is not swatting shots that much. Well, turns out, swatting a shot is not that easy nor common. For Wembanyama and others. I saw while comparing his recovery percentage to other current block leading players
Here are the comparisons with 5 other top blockers this season (used only March for Wemby and Clingan, had to go with February and March for the others to have a bigger sample):
Clingan (#2 in March, #5 in 25⁄26): 19⁄33 (58%) ended in a Portland possession.
Gobert (#4 in 25⁄26): 23⁄37 (62%) ended up in a Wolves possession.
Holmgren (#3 in 25⁄26): 18⁄30 (60%) ended up in an OKC possession.
Jay Huff (#2 in 25⁄26): 17⁄39 (44%) ended up in a Pacers possession.
Buzelis (#7 in 25⁄26 but #3 in February/March): 22⁄41 (54%) ended up in a Bulls possession.
Granted the samples are small with only the last two months and a handful of players, but Wembanyama blocks a lot more than other top blockers and the recovery is quite higher than every other players too (and often done directly by Wembanyama directly).
