He said two years ago that he’d want to join the sonics if they came back. Why do the exact same things you mentioned for a fringe contender when you can lead the return of the team that drafted you?

Depending on how this Rockets stint ends up, there may not be a lot of contenders calling for his services.

And I’m not trying to hate on the guy, he’s still an incredible scorer but the track record is the track record.

I mean, there are worse ways to go out.  His biggest positive legacy is that of an all-time great scorer.  If he doesn’t get a max offer from a contender, why not go back to the Sonics, get a max contract, and average 35 PPG and set a new career high with 0 pressure on you?  It’s not like him playing 2nd or 3rd fiddle as a ring chaser is going to improve how people see him.  At the very least, he might get his jersey retired in Seattle, which is something, considering the only team that will currently retire his jersey is Golden State, which he may not even like at this point.

That Paolo is a winning player, that he wants to leave Orlando, that Orlando would want him to move on (very rare for #1 that’s not a bust) or that Paolo would go to an expansion franchise when he never saw the original team play

That the Thunder would keep these guys on their roster to be picked in an expansion draft instead of trading them to other teams for better assets, where they would then be protected at the expense of worst players. I can guarantee you Sam Presti isn’t letting these guys leave the building for nothing

That there are just quality bigs that are going to be readily available to them via free agency or trades

That the Seattle team would have first crack at any or all of these guys over the Vegas teams

Regardless the team you built is a much less talented version of the Rockets team KD is currently treading water with. They would be closer to the Kings roster based off talent, which isn’t nearly good enough to make the play ins.

Teams get to protect 8 players, you might get a couple starter caliber players, but you will have a team full of benchwarmers.

Expansion teams are historically set up to fail their first few years due to pretty harsh restrictions. Hopefully it’s different this time around, as there’s more talent to go around now than ever before.
