I’ve gone through every All-NBA voting result from 1988-89 to 2022-23. 1988-89 was the first season with a 3rd All-NBA team, while 2022-23 was the last season before the 65-game rule was instated.
For each of these All-NBA teams, I identified which players would not meet the 65-game threshold (or a prorated version of the threshold for shortened seasons) and made my best guess based on the voting results on who would’ve replaced their spots. Players were selected by position in 2022-23 and earlier, which helped inform my guesses.
Note that having such a rule would’ve likely affected how often players rested games, so this exercise doesn’t indicate who would’ve been All-NBA had the rule been in place from the start. Everything here is post hoc.
Also, since way too many people seem to forget this, keep in mind that the 65-game threshold does not just mean playing 65 games immediately qualifies a player for awards. A player needs at least 65 games of 15+ minutes and at least 63 games of 20+ minutes to qualify.
