Thankfully, Moody’s speed is not his strong suit. His lateral quickness is below average for his size. He’s not a super explosive athlete, so I think that probably bodes well for him; he’s got a really long wingspan and he’s stronger than he looks, and he can shoot the 3 well. I don’t doubt that this has a very detrimental effect on his career trajectory, but I think he’ll be able to come back and still be an impactful player.

Aside from major spinal injuries, paralysis, or loss of limbs, I don’t think there are many injuries that are instant career ending injuries these days. Patellar tendon and Achilles are probably the most feared words coming out of a doctor’s mouth when you’re talking about lower leg injuries. Back injuries that linger will also derail a career but aren’t necessarily instant. Medicine has come a long way since this one but Bo Jackson’s hip dislocation and hip fracture led to necrosis. He never played in the NFL again, although he did return to MLB in a diminished capacity

Knee ligament injuries have always been fairly common but they don’t end careers the way they did before the turn of the century. As a kid I remember lots of up and coming running backs whose careers were totally detailed by knee injuries. These days, if all goes well the player can often return to full availability in a year or less.

I started getting real sore legs the day after rec league games. I kept saying oh, I must’ve just run too hard, or maybe I did something weird to ‘em, but my wife had to step in and said “this is happening every week, I’m sorry but I think you’re just old.”

I’ve seen a few guys go down and deal with some bad stuff that sucks to rehab when you’re not an athlete with world-class rehab accommodations, I took that as the call to leave the league. Still play now and then but competitive play just pushes an old body so hard in so many directions.

You can cope a basic lifestyle without an ACL. It’s basically the seat belt of the knee. Keeping things together with weird torquey angles. But it doesn’t do hardly anything with straight line linear movements. You can compensate with other muscle, tendons, ligaments.

The patellar on the other hand is a connection between your quads and lower leg and is a mechanically necessary tendon for even basic joint function.

Shit happens man. I went up for a rebound 10 years ago. Grabbed a board 10 thousand times in my life. When I landed, I didn’t land on anyone’s leg or foot or anything. I turned to outlet the ball and as I turned, I pivoted my right foot onto my toes. As I fully pivot, my ankle twists downwards and I dislocate my ankle and as the ankle is dislocating, the bottom of my tibia hit the ground. Suffered a dislocated ankle and a small fracture in my tibia because I turned to pass the ball after getting a rebound lmao shit made no sense. It happened on such a routine thing that I waited 3 days to go to the doctor because I just thought it was a pretty bad sprain. Quite the shock when the x rays came back lol

I’ve sprained my ankles so many times that yeah, I just assumed thats all it was. It also didn’t even register in my head that my ankle had popped out and back in so i just attributed the pain to what i knew. I also dislocated my kneecap and shoulder 15 years ago so my experience with dislocations was more urgent, obvious and painful which this injury wasn’t. The doctor literally had to tell me I’d suffered a dislocation after the MRI and x ray based on the surrounding damage. Also, I didn’t want to make my post more wordy but they didn’t discover the tibia fracture until 2 weeks later when the swelling had come down.

This sucks so bad!

I’m not even a Warriors fan, but I love Moody. He has been one of those dudes I thought should’ve had more burn for awhile now. And here the guy finally gets some real minutes this year and he’s shooting 40% from 3 on 6+ shots a game - exactly what you’d want. But now this shit.

In fairness though, he’s still only 23 - and modern medicine seems to be making injuries more recoverable more and more every day… but still, this looks fucking ROUGH.

Really hoping for the best going forward

i’m a warriors fan and huge fan of moody man this is such a fucking bummer 😭 he really blossomed into a legit 3 and D starter this season. one of the best shooters on the team and he has crazy long arms and great hands. advanced stats like him a lot too. great person and a super hard worker, by all accounts.

i’m gutted for the guy. i really hope he continues the trend of athletes recovering better and better from these major tendon injuries. i was sure he was on pace for a nice, 10+ year career as a reliable role player for good teams.

Dude that was the other thing I didn’t mention in my reply to the other dude - I saw his poem he wrote and I was kinda blown away! I’m an artist/ musician/ songwriter myself, so it was kinda like ‘Damn this dude I like is also a great poet?! I love him even more now!’

But yeah, the timing of the injury is so shit. Its like this guy is on the verge of making generational money doing something he loves, being a sought after player in the league after years of genuine hard work and putting in the time waiting for a chance.

Still, I’m going to hold out hope, for sure. Like you said, these sorts of operations are as good as they’ve ever been, and the type of player he was, I think his game will be good enough to recoup. He’s definitely smart and absolutely a hard worker, so if anyone is going to bounce back, its him

And yeah, I’m not a Warriors fan particularly myself, but my daughter who loves basketball is a big fan of Steph, so I’ve watched my fair share of Warriors in recent years. Moody was immediately a favorite of mine with his hustle and defense, and especially because he just seemed to always be working and trying to grow. Like that old class of up and comers from the 22 Finals season with him, Poole, Kuminga, and Wiseman - everyone else felt kinda flakey. Where Moody seemed like wise-beyond-his-years sort of player. After awhile I was really asking myself ‘Why isn’t this dude playing more?!’

But I know Kerr is particular with his rotations, so I was super psyched when he started breaking into the starting lineup more last year, and now especially this year, starting more games than not. I was kinda getting to the point of thinking he’s about to be a sought after 3&D dude, so its just kinda like ‘Fuck!’ - why now of all times does this happen?!

Anyway, I’m really hoping the dude comes back as good as ever - he certainly seems like he’s got the heart to put in the work

Soccer is a different sport. You can be effective in so many more ways as a footballer, especially as a striker. If you can hold the ball up, pass to your teammates, and put the ball in the back of net in the box you can still play even with bad knees. You don’t have to be an explosive athlete.

Basketball is different. Moody isn’t very athletic to start with, I worry this injury really does end his career.

At this point in time, with advances in surgery and rehab techniques, the rupture of the patellar tendon seems like the worst lower extremity injury compared to the “career enders” of the past like the Achilles or even ACL. Its rarer and essentially no cases yet of successful rehab “back to 100%” for high impact sports like basketball whereas with acls being pretty common and achilles becoming more common with all that cutting, there seems to be better techniques developed to get athletes back in shape aka Durant, Tatum, etc

My dad tore his patellar. Absolutely brutal injury. Took him a year of healing and rehab just to be able to get back to light running. Obviously not a pro athlete so its not the same but ya its about as bad of an injury as it gets for sports purposes

Tore mime 5 years ago, initial rehab took a year. What killed me is how much explosion I lost from it. I live a pretty normal life now but I still feel it to this day and its lost effectively its explosive power. Will say I didn’t have millions to spend on rehab and didn’t care to have it all back. I just wanted to walk again

Not that this is any consolation, but at least Moody is under contract through 2027-28. He can rehab next year and still has a year on his contract to play and hopefully show he can still be an impactful player.
