[Injury] Moses Moody with a gruesome non-contact knee-injury.. GRAPHIC
Torn patellar tendon it seems. That’s why his knee cap was pulled up into his leg.
He’s out for at least a year is my guess. Brutal.
Yup. Similar mechanism of injury happened to Oladipo in his last NBA game..
Oladipo was cooking in that game too
Best he’s ever looked for us. Including the burst of speed. Shame his body couldn’t keep up anymore.
He was on the list of players I’ve always wanted that fits. A great POA defender, high IQ, and overall great teammate.
Moody was just back from a wrist injury, and also absolutely cooking both sides of the floor. :(
I’ve only had a patellar dislocation, but that shit can get to be so painful. It was waves of extreme pain as my leg forcefully tensed up, with a lot of discomfort in between.
From reading descriptions, I can’t even imagine the pain that both Oladipo and Moody had to endure.
It’s been 5 months since i dislocated mine golfing and i cant even put laundry away without my knee giving out i cant imagine this tear
I dislocated mine dancing but it rubber banded back and broke off some bone. Needed surgery. 6 months of recovery and PT and I never fully recovered as I have arthritis in my knee now.
Damn I didn’t even realize that happened to him a second time. He had a similar injury when he played for us. Wasn’t really ever the same after that.
I remember that game. That was absolutely devastating to watch.
I remember Jeremy Lin getting that injury on the Nets. Brutal is right
I remember this game.
He was crying.
tore my patellar tendon in 2024 10⁄10 would not recommend
What would have happened if he landed on that leg?
Super happy that he didn’t, but surely that would have been really bad or even if he landed with that knee.
My guess is that’s extremely unlikely. Body’s instinct is to protect its pain places so you’d not try to land on foot. Probably even if the positioning was unavoidable you’d land on your hip or something similar.
There’s a famous powerlifting coach - Louis Simmons - who did a 735lb squat, felt his knee cap slide, went and attempted 760lb, and snapped his knee cap in half.
So maybe that.

I don’t think I’m going to click on that
Typically a career ender unfortunately. Who knows with modern medicine though
Moody’s young and only 23 so i hope he’s able to still come back and be the same player. his game isnt built much on speed and quickness anyway
true, but hopefully he’ll be enough to match the pace of the game now. even KD has relegated to more of a half court game now since the Achilles
I’ll be very surprised if it ends his career. He’s only 23.
Andre Roberson was 26 and it ended his career
He can still come back (Roberson, Oladipo, and Lin technically came back) but it might be kinda over.
Different sport but Nakobe Dean from the NFL tore his patellar tendon when he was on the Eagles and came back to play even better so there is hope he can recover
How does that happen without any contact? Is it just a freak injury?
Wear and tear on the tendon over the years. Reaches its breaking point and can completely break apart. Come off the bone at the top of the shin or partially tear. Easiest one to fix is when it comes off the bone. Hopefully this is what happened to Moody. Otherwise if it completely broke it’s a real invasive surgery. Usually the tendon has to be held together with wires that are attached to a very tiny box that sits on top of the shin bone.
My brother had the “coming off the bone” break, since we both have Osgood Schlatters Disease, thereby making our Patellar Tendons weaker, and it took him probably a full year to get back to it at full strength.
Yeah, I don’t know what else it could be.
This is correct. Patellar tendon rupture.
I had that same injury.. that shit sucked. Orthopedic said it’s worse than an acl tear. Except my kneecap was in two places bc I broke it in the process as well.
This same exact thing happened to me….can confirm
I’ve never seen a knee like that… wtf
Prayers bro
Could just be a dislocated knee. I seen it once as a kid playing football with girlfriend and some friends. One girl made a cut and her knee cap was on the side of her leg. My girlfriends dad was a PT and just popped it back
Yeah dislocated kneecaps usually slide right or left.
Moody’s knecap was sticking up vertically and was above his knee joint..
Patellar tendon fully tore
Yep that’s it. Happened to me playing about 10 years ago now. Knee cap was up on my thigh
whatthefuck.gif
Looked like wat ended oladipo’s career except he was wearing a brace at the time so u couldnt really see it
Pretty sure that happened to Victor Oladipo
I don’t know shit but does that mean his patellar tendon would be torn?
I broke my knee cap in pretty much this exact way, went to jump, felt and heard a massive pop and fell backwards mid air. When I pokedwhere the patella was supposed to be, there was nothing, it had just split in two
I hope this it it because that sounds better than the alternative.
One of the Warriors announcers, Kelenna Azubuike, was saying it might the exact injury he had where he tore his patellar tendon; he said his knee cap was somehow at his quad. I feel like it’s probably the same injury as well cause Moody’s knee just completely gave out when he went up for the dunk.
Yeah Kelenna knew as soon as Moody hit the ground.
This is likely a full thickness patellar tendon tear. As others have mentioned, dislocated patellas slide right or left of patellar groove, and can be reduced (popped back in) 99% of the time. Seeing an obvious high rising patella indicates the patellar tendon that was anchoring the patella had snapped and that the quad tendon is bring the patella upwards.

What’s the recovery time for something like this? Any long term effects?
I don’t anticipate him coming back until the 2027-2028 season. He’s young so I’m optimistic he’ll be able to make a decent recovery, but hard to tell at this point. Each individual is different and responds to rehab differently.
Never seen a player come back 100% from this kind of injury
Dislocated knee is one of the worst things it could possibly be. Means the ACL, LCL, and PCL are most likely torn and more than likely other damage.
Just want to clarify for people that a dislocated knee and a dislocated kneecap are different things.
A dislocated kneecap can be no big deal- happened to me twice. It popped back in, swelled, I took time off, and was fine.
A dislocated knee can be really bad.
(Having said that, I didn’t watch the clip because I’ve been hurt too many times and hate watching injuries. So, I have no comment on what this injury actually looked like.)
Not really, no. Braden Huff for Gonzaga dislocated his knee in January and while he didn’t return to the tournament, he is jogging and shooting again now in March. Severity can vary.
You guys are talking about two different things. Braden Huff had a kneecap dislocation, which can be pretty mild and easily recovered from and usually don’t result in major ligamentous damage. A knee joint dislocation is when the femur and the tibia translate over each other beyond the extent of the joint capsule and almost always results in massive ligamentous, capsular, and neurovascular damage.
Dislocated kneecap sucks but it’s manageable with treatment. Dislocated knee can get real fucked up.
Look at the Tank Dell injury - the knee dislocated, the ligaments were destroyed, only thing holding his upper leg to lower leg was skin. He’s finally recovering now and this was 2024.
Let’s hope Moses just has a kneecap issue.
Looks like a dislocation.
Absolutely does not look like a dislocation. The fact that the patellar is high-riding indicates a fully torn patellar tendon
It looks so mundane, idk how that even happened?
Launched on that leg, too much pressure on knee
An NBA player launching off of their leg is mundane yes.
If I had to guess, tore a ligament on the jump and the fall on a weakened knee caused the dislocation.
That was brutal. Reminds me of when I saw Baron Davis final game live
that’s what It reminded me of too, damn man
I haven’t seen anything like that before, it looks like he tore his patella and the knee cap has been pulled right up over the knee or something. Looked brutal…
Looked like Greg Oden knee.
My immediate thought. Greg when his patella broke apart.
Looks exactly like the Greg Oden patellar injury. That sunken in look is a patellar injury 99.9% of the time.
My knee looked exactly like this when i shattered my patella
What the fuck did I just watch
A ruptured patellar.
Shit. That is an awful injury.
It’s recoverable (source: had 2 of them at once)
Woah, how did you manage to have that happen???
I’ve seen it happen while skiing before
How did that happen?!
Trying to dunk with a trampoline
How old were you when that happened? Are you back to normal after that?
I was 29 and I’m fine now. Took a year
And you’re still a capable NBA player?
We’re talking recoverable and still being a top 450 player in the world.
Literally yes my ppg is exactly the same
bro that’s clearly Derick Rose’s reddit burner have some respect😤
Yeah looks like the patella detached from his tibia and was pulled up over his knee fuck dude
I’m at the game and it happened about 10 feet from me, I can’t even tell you what the fuck just happened.
I just wanted to say as a fan I truly appreciate how the fans in the stadium behaved. Some fan bases can be horrible to players on other teams even when seriously injured and to see almost every person standing quietly with the clapping for him made me so grateful that we aren’t really all as divided as some people want to make it seem.
He’s leaving on a stretcher this is terrible
edit: holy shit he’s only 23
I’m gonna cry man. This is a season from hell for us. Heartbreaking and unfair. And Moody’s one of my favorite players too :‘(
Me too man!!!! Me too!!!!
He just came back man. Fucking sucks.
Is your team cursed or something like every year you guys have 3-5 injured players.
No, the golden state warriors are not cursed
The whole fucking city is cursed when you include the 49ers
4 championships since 2015 btw
Tbf I’m not complaining about the actual results, I just hate how our teams constantly have terrible injury luck
Is there a substation near Chase
Somehow I always think Moody has been in the league for a decade.
He has a veteran game
He’s a sharp guy. High character. Great mentality.
Hate this for him, but at least he’s not on a rookie contract anymore. Got a payday before this.
And a veteran name. Moses Moody sounds like a guy thats been around forever
Yeah, I thought he was in his late 20s
It’s because his name is Moses. I always think he’s been in the league for at least 13 years.
Well glad that he is still relatively young. He can recover.
Never heard of guys named drose and greg oden?
Treatments have come a long way since those days. These dudes come back from Achilles tears like nothing now. An ACL tear used to be terrifying to recover from.
Based on everyone’s reaction (except Dame), it still is
Has a player ever came back right from a torn patella?
Patella is a bone, but I’m not familiar with any patellar tendon tears so I can’t say.
D-Rose played another 10 seasons after his ACL tear
I’m just glad he at least signed one decently sized contract already.
Omg. The camera panned to him as I looked up and I was like wtf.
Genuinely didn’t know what exactly was on my screen for a second. It looked fake
Yeah same experience here. Heard the commotion, looked back at the screen, then promptly had to cover my eyes. Legitimately shocking.
Dang, man. No OT and he’s just fine. Brutal.
Non contact injury coming off a routine jump means it likely was just a matter of time
maybe. It’s hard to tell your level of Fatigue with the adrenaline pumping for an OT game.
If whatever tore tonight required him to just do a lackadaisical uncontested fast break dunk to tear, it means it would have happened anytime now. Fatigue doesn’t affect the integrity of the tendon/ligament/bone (we will see what the injury actually is). Fatigue could impact mechanics and secondarily cause an athlete to land wrong or jump wrong, thereby causing an injury, but there didn’t seem to be any of that with this play.
Obviously none of us can know for certain like you said, but it seems most likely to be the case
imo his surrounding muscles looked pretty strained too. This has happened to people with muscle strains or severe, sudden cramps too. The patella needs more support than just the surrounding ligaments, and lack of support mid-air while also making a sudden lateral turning motion can cause the patella to fail. If he didn’t feel any pain right before the injury, then yeah his MPFL is likely weak and got torn from instability
Does it though? Who are you to say that?
Yea, that’s definitely not right. Could be a bunch of things. Too much training recently, injury in another area causing odd movement or whatever else.
Maybe, but it wouldn’t have been tonight.
Fuck man I hadn’t even thought of that. I’d do anything even to have lost in regulation if it meant avoiding this.
My worst memory is in a pick up game. I had the “game winning layup” and thought the game was over. Other team said you gotta win by 2. I reluctantly agree. Next possession I go up for the real game winning layup, get fouled, land awkwardly and snap my ankle in half.
Brutal close-up. Unreal luck.
Warriors season cursed fr. Looked like his patellar tendon.
yeah it looked like every medically defined part of the knee
Patella tendon connects you kneecap to to your lower leg so it was probably only that tendon. Still terrible and hard to come back from Oladipo and Tyler Lockett are a couple recent ones that come to mind.
Nakobe Dean had a torn Patellar last year as well and he came back looking amazing for the Eagles. Trying to be optimistic for Moody, absolutely brutal
bro Moody was having a phenomenal game back and has looked rly good this season. this is absolutely tragic
Tragic, came back from the wrist injury, big moments in OT. Now this.
Whole knee looked like it just gave out, gnarly injury. Poor moody
😭 punt this season
Heartbreaking.
Gonna do myself a favor tonight and not watch this. Prayers up for Moody
Yup. I refuse to see this, paul george’s injury, and haywards’s injury. no reason to watch shit like that
never seen either of those either. i particularly find knee stuff really disturbing, i got in a car crash when someone tboned me running a red light a decade ago and ill never forget the feeling of my knee cap needing to be popped back into place. and im sure thats extremely minor compared to this.
You can take it a step further and recall that one college guy that didn’t land correctly but his knee came out.
This is why when I see the warnings on titles of these threads i take them seriously.
When you say prayers, just say it right there.
God, please help Moody recover. Please be with him while he rehabs.
Did Bob Myers make some kind of deal with the devil for those four chips?
This season is cursed for GS.
WTF is that?!?
Yeah, that’s not ideal.
Omg holy shit wtf
Couldn’t believe it watching it live
Chalk this entire fucking season man
Dislocated knee?
Somehow worse
The commentators were making so many jokes before this about the floor having to be mopped so much, they were so annoyed every time the mop guys came out and delayed the game. Well maybe they should have spent a little more time mopping more thoroughly…
Yes an injury from him jumping is because the floor wasn’t mopped enough
I feel horrible for him man. Truth be told I laughed at first when it happened, not realizing what occurred.
If someone collapses while no one is around, it’s always gonna be bad.
Looks to me like a “I hope he can come back for the 27-28 season” kinda injury.
Same. Laughed at the brick and now I feel like shit.
Honestly just thought he slipped or something until they showed that close up on the knee
I gasped when I saw that shit… wtf happened to his knee
I don’t even know what the diagnosis for this would be oh my god
Looks like a patellar tendon tear
His patellar tendon got torn and his kneecap slide up his leg. Hence the gap in his knee joint and the protrusion above.
Is that worse than an ACL?
Way worse
Effectively ended Victor Oladipo, Jeremy Lin, and Andre Roberson’s careers, to name a few. So it’s not great
It’s probably the 2nd worst injury behind achilles tear. And unfortunately we don’t have evidence that players can come back the same, unlike recent achilles recoveries.
I think he slipped on a wet spot because you see the ball boy running off the court as he was approaching.
That did not look good for Moody. I feel so terrible for him.
That’s what I was thinking but after another watch it seems like his footing is good. Nothing about this looks anything other than routine. Except that one thing.
They wiped that spot for a few minutes 2-3 times in the overtime period something was messed up with the court there and the refs let them play on.
He just got back from the wrist sprain, and was having SUCH a great game on both ends. Trying to put on a show for the fans and this happens. Heartwrenching man. He’s still getting medical attention.
[deleted]
That was his kneecap.
Looked like his femur sidestepped his knee and was pushing out from the inside, yack.
Kevin Ware stuff
Shaun Livingston vibes. Seems wild to do all that on a basic jump.
You know ball! Forgot about Livingston. Still managed to have a hell of a career after switching his game up. Might be the case for Moody. Obviously gotta see what the results are.
Brutal to watch. Prayers up for him
Shades of Gordon Hayward. Good thing the camera operator cut away instantly.
There is a shot where they zoomed in on the knee that was nasty.
His knee became an innie bro, wtf
Was just discussing with a friend earlier how Moody is one of very few bright points in an overall miserable season
No words
Damn, a motion your body has done a thousand times, and one day it just fails on you. We’re fragile
Yeah Golden State, it might be over. Like, over for a few years now
That hurt man
Jesus
Took Shaun Livingston’s knee
That cut back to the injury was a damn shock, feel so bad for the guy. I dont think anyone realised how serious it was. I mean at first, i just thought he messed up a dunk or layup.
Never seen anything like that before in my life. His kneecap just disappeared
Looks like patellar tendon rupture based on the post injury anatomy. Fucking terrible
Was bracing myself for the landing, was not expecting it to happen in the leadup
That closeup was up there with Paul George and Kevin Ware in gruesome basketball injuries 😫 I hope Moody can make a full recovery someday, but it’s sadly gonna be a tough road ahead
Scared my dog when they showed that close up
Why is he playing 34 minutes on the first game back from injury?
After a steal too! Dude always hustles. Hope it’s as good as it gets!
Need the Brian Sutterer MD breakdown on this one
Ruptured patella tendon, I would know unfortunately. My knee cap literally slid to my quad after I ruptured it.
🙏🙏🙏
Prayers up for Moody
Bruh graphic isn’t even a strong enough word for that
Livingston has reappeared.
Damn
Holy shit
Man, I’ve watched the NBA for a damn near long time and never seen anything like that in a while.
Achilles and ACL tears just snap so quickly on replays, but this just feels so much more graphic
My 8yo just saw that….oof
Looked like Roberson’s injury, just awful
oh my god. I gasped loudly at home. Holy Shit.
Dang his knee just gave out 🤯
Eww
Wife and I screamed when we saw his knee.
oh my god
Was focused on Moody’s face at first before I noticed his knee. Brutal, poor guy :(
i know you wanna look at it, but DON’T
