The duo of Ayo Dosunmu and Bones Hyland since Anthony Edwards went down: a combined 39-10-8 on 51-46-92 shooting splits. The Timberwolves are 3-1 with wins over Phoenix and Boston in that time.
Ayo since Ant went down: 19-8-6 on 50-47-90 splits.
Bones since Ant went down: 20-2-2.5 on 53-45-93 splits.
Even before Ant was sidelined with a knee injury, the Timberwolves desperately needed a shot in the arm. Ayo and Bones have provided that and more, acting as an unexpectedly dynamic backcourt duo. They provide elite transition play, explosiveness off the dribble, reliable jumpshot making, and good playmaking and ballhandling. The energy and the pace when they’re on the floor is unlike anything the Timberwolves have had in years.
Last night when they shared the floor, they outscored Boston 46-26, with an offensive rating of 139.4 and a defensive rating of 86.7.
The Timberwolves look like they’ve found something in this duo, and it’s becoming easier and easier to imagine that they dump Randle for whatever they can get in the offseason to ensure they have space to extend them both. The Timberwolves have spent the last couple of years desperately searching for a Mike Conley replacement on the roster who can reliably run the offense and take some pressure off of Ant having to have the ball in his hands constantly. This duo could be a big X-factor for the Timberwolves in the playoffs.
