Robert Parish has a message for LeBron James: “I’m happy for you, and I’m proud too, no player is better deserving to break that ironman record, that 1,611 games played record, than LeBron. He deserves it, in my opinion.”
Legends who uplifts current players >>>>>>
all shit aside I’m genuinely happy, that most celtics old heads seem to genuinely enjoy basketball and decided not to be bitter cunts.
Celtic fans on the other hand….
I genuinely think, that Celtics fans have been more then barable over the past years, compared to the other shit thats going on here… but I had my fair share of second hand embarassment during the championchip run and especially the finals.
Celtics fans like 15-20 years ago were a million times worse in my experience
Feel like not having a “larger then life” superstar on your squad kinda leads to less bandwagon fans, but I’m maybe not the right person to talk about that, as I’m not from the sates and haven’t been to the eastcoast since 2019.
Careful, the States might come to you with a username like that
had that in the 90s.
all they did was leaving a bunch of uranium ammo and ppl with really dumb first names.
I don’t think context would make that comment any less silly. I love it lol.
NATO airstrikes on FR Yugoslavia.
Left about 10 tons of uranium ammo in Kosovo, with Bler, Tonibler & Klinton becoming somewhat widespread first names in Kosovo in the aftermath.
Tatum is perfectly life sized
In a good way
It amazes me that people hate that guy so much
He is the absolutely larger than life guy. He’s also a corndog, but endearingly so if he’s on your team.
I’ve been on nba forums since 2009.
laker/kobe fans have easily always been the worst.
warriors fans after they got good were 2nd worst.
LeBron-obsessed fans 3rd.
Okc fans here are walking the line and could round out the Mount Rushmore of annoyingness if they win again this year. I won’t dump on them yet though.
Peak Heat culture Heat fans were annoying as well.
Everyone else has some shitheads, but are mostly fine.
I agree 100% with this. LeBron obsessed fans (haters and stans) have been annoying his whole career. I was also one of the annoying haters in like 2007.
Celtics fans have indeed been much better from an outside perspective. Years ago, they were like what the stereotypical OKC flair/fan is today. Now, Celtics fans/flairs come across mostly fair and reasonable from what I’ve seen (ofc any large fanbase will have the one-off odd-balls that make you shake your head, but that’s just a numbers game lol)
As a Laker fan will the second hand embarrassment ever end for me?
“as long as there is delusion, there is hope”.
Very well said man okc and nuggets are becoming something and acting like weird shit like they won multiple championships n were great franchise like the Celtics or the Lakers, our younger brother in the other LA though I don’t know
The embarrassing fans of any franchise always show up when they’re getting a ring. They’re not the type to stick it out through a rebuild, that would be too humbling.
People that genuinely love basketball will always appreciate great players and teams from all eras, rivalries aside.
Larry have been one of the most supportive and appreciative of the next gens since back then. Truly a legend
Yeah Larry’s been like that forever, I think it was on the Last Dance doc but been in other clips before, the Dream Team faced off the against the best college guys and Larry said he was glad he was gonna be out of the league when Chris Webber joins.
Besides Shaq, past Lakers players also.
wasn’t throwing jabs at Lakers for once.
chief is also not the best example for wholesome retired guys, but it was kinda the first thought I had on this.
Larry is the awesome cuz he does it
paul pierce is kinda annoying tho
“I can score in more WAYS than Jordan”
I tried not to like Bill Russell but he made it really difficult
Yeah, I enjoy when KG and Pierce get into it on the podcast.
U know ur from straya when…
This and Bill Russell is why my East team is the Celtics.
Shout out George Gervin for the same attitude
Parrish I think is supposed to be chill af. Into yoga and weed and even eastern type philosophy and that was well-known even in the 90s. Not surprised he seems chill here.
As long as you’re not Bill Laimbeer.
Which only adds to his image described above.
he was known throughout the league to be a guy not to fuck with and he violently assaulted his ex-wife, cuz she had the audacity to come to his hotel room while he was fucking someone else.
That fucking sucks. Wow. Had no idea.
Dont forget he is a practitioner of the arts
Didnt larry bird say something like this about the new 3 point shooters
Larry is the biggest new game glazer
When you’re content about what you did, you hold no resentment to what you did and what that thing had become.
Players who completed their competitive arc don’t need to negotiate with the future. Their era is a finished argument. That’s why MJ, Larry, and Kobe don’t attack the modern game, they don’t need validation from it. History already ruled in their favor.
Shaq is what couldve wouldve been, despite the 4 rings.
Charles Barkley name is attached forever to “no ring”. The game moved on without giving him closure, and that gap has to be filled with opinion.
I can think of one other reason why Kobe doesn’t attack the modern game.
I get the impression that Bird enjoys this new era because he kind of wishes he could have played in a era like today’s. He’d have loved to line up against Curry and kick his ass, not because Curry sucks and hasn’t earned his accolades, but because he’s great and he has.
Compare that to Barkley and Shaq who see 235 pound KAT shooting 45% from 3 and ask why he doesn’t post up down low, is he an idiot or something?
My man
@charlesbarkley
It’s sad that I had expected for him to shit on LeBron because a lot of legends keep shitting on the generations after them
Guess some people are surprised he didn’t say back in his day, 1,611 was a larger number😄
+1
Agreed, it’s so annoying how the NBA is full of stars that became haters as time went on. Even as someone who doesn’t like LeBron very much, you can’t deny that when it comes to longevity while playing at a high level, he has no match.
Shaq could never
Parish is one of the most underappreciated legends of his time. They don’t win that ‘84 chip without him and Bird dominating the glass like he did.
Never an MVP-level player, but he genuinely was in the convo back in 82. Insane he came into the league at 23 and still played 21 seasons
He isn’t underappreciated lol. He was widely seen as a part of the Celtics Big 3 in the 80s and made the NBA 75.
Fair, but he hardly ever seems to come up in casual conversations about great big men
There is just a lot of good big men to talk about
Nods in Mikan stan
that’s bc he’s arguably only the 3rd best Celtics C of all time after Russell and Cowens
even lower on the great Celtics bigs when you think about Havlicheck, McHale, Garnett, and Fab Melo
lol not fab melo
rip
Yeah, he’s better than all of them combined.
Notable big man, John Halvicek
i always get Havlicheck and Lucas confused and who played what lol
Lucas? You mean Dave Cowens?
havlicheck and lucas both played at ohio state
But he didn’t play for the Celtics lol
Garnett is the better player, do Celtics fans think he’s the better Celtic over Parish?
All respect to Garnett, he isn’t close to Parish in Celtics lore. Parish had almost 4x the number of games with us, and was the 2nd or 3rd best player for 3 rings.
Parish is also the dude that everyone loves. Dads fuck with Robert Parish heavy
Always surprises me you guys retired KG’s jersey. Yeah he was a part of the Big 3, but Pierce was the one symbolic of that era.
KG completely reset the mentality of the franchise that arguably carried through until today. He came into a dogwater team and ubuntu’d them to 67 wins, and I think that culture of consistent success is what has been carried on through today.
Where does Perks land in your list, top 3 or top 2?
always considered him a guard trapped in a water buffaloes body, so he’s competing with Dennis Johnson, Bob Cousy, Chris Herren, and Rajon Rondo
Just after Pervis Ellison and Vin Baker for me.
Obviously, he’s not an all-time great Celtic, but his post-celtics career and especially his post-basketball career has really made people forget how important he was to those teams. He was a perfect fit as a defensive center next to Garnett and I’m still convinced we win one more championship if Ainge didn’t trade him for Jeff Green. He was not the laughing stock people make him out to be now.
I see what you did, trying to sneak McHale in there like we wouldn’t notice.
fab melo now thats a blast from the past
You guys have to understand thats how time works lol. He’s not under appreciated or anything he just played a long time ago and wasn’t a complete anomaly like wilt/kareem/russell
Cuz there are at least 10 centers clearly better/greater than him
Bet I could get up to 20
He was great, but we’re talking about the most stacked position in NBA history
It’s because he was 2nd fiddle to Mchale.
he hardly ever seems to come up in casual conversations about great big men
Because he doesn’t quite belong.
When people talk about the great big men, they’re taking about Shaq, Kareem, Wilt, Russell, Hakeem, maybe even Duncan, KG and Dirk, if you want to include PFs. And Parrish isn’t on that level.
He’s underrated for sure. Even more so during his career.
I hear “Bird and McHale” far more than I hear “Bird, McHale, and Parish.” He wasn’t in the Converse commercial with them.
Hell, his “Winning Time” actor didn’t even appear in the credited actors section.
Yeah, he has accolades, but you have to admit his name never comes up on lists of former stars despite being a 9x all-star with four rings.
Winning time also wasn’t a documentary lol
That’s interesting to hear about the Converse thing. The other stuff is more subjective. Ultimately if you’re not Top 20, you probably won’t get much longevity.
And how many current fans know about Parish? I think they’re talking more about the current discussions and not honors from back in the day or by the NBA.
Yeah but tbf that’s gonna happen to every player not arguably Top 20. How many ppl talk about Ibaka for example – was a core part of the Baby Thunder and Championship Raptors, two major teams for millennials/zoomers, yet isn’t talked about anymore.
Parish is closer to top 20 than he is to Serge Ibaka
Cowens and Havlicek are closer than both of them and still not consistently appreciated.
for the casuals, he is. the same people believe that the era of big 3 started with the Heatles
He’s only underrated on Reddit cause most people on this subreddit weren’t born yet when he played lmao 🤣
Also, as a 42 year old got into a face off with MJ during practice and made him back down. Absolute badass.
He’s appreciated appropriately I think for a top ~60-70 player. He’s a top 20 center all-time but overall the top 20 list for centers is Kareem, Russ, Shaq, Hakeem, Duncan, Wilt, Jokic, Robinson. I think even Moses is probably out of the top 20 now. And Wemby is taking a spot soon most likely.
Ahead of Parish after Moses is Ewing, Gilmore, Dwight, Walton, Cowens, Reed, McAdoo, then maybe Parish? He’s the 3rd best Celtic center of all time after Russ and Cowens.
Why is everyone underrated and unappreciated lol
LeBron had a lot of praise for Parish the other night and said there weren’t many OGs like Parish who give praise to the newer guys and that he really likes the way he speaks about the game. Pretty crazy a Celtics player from that era shows more love to LeBron than Michael Cooper who LeBron famously called out on the Pat McAfee show last year lol
I googled the Michael cooper and LeBron thing. Fucking lmao
For anyone who doesn’t know LeBron was working out pregame in a full sweat for a preseason game that he wasn’t playing. He comes back out to sit on the bench when the game starts with a cup of fruit to replenish what he lost in the work out but Michael Cooper says that was disrespectful to the game of basketball 🤣🤣
Bruh the first google image for him is straight cursed
That there’s a man who don’t each nooooo damn fruit on nooooooo damn bench.
LeBron will always get points in my book for being genuinely respectful to the prior gens at every opportunity.
Finally an ex nba player who isn’t salty,
Kareem said this like way before Bron broke his scoring record
Tell your dad to drag Walton and Lanier up and down the court for 48 minutes.
You don’t really try, except for the playoffs.
THE HELL I DON’T.
(One if the greatest cameos of all time)
My favorite part of that cameo is that it was largely based on his real interactions with fans. He used to deny being a player when people asked for autographs despite it being very obvious he was who he was.
My grandma once saw the entire Milwaukee Bucks team in the airport and asked for autographs for her son. Every player gave her something, apparently, except Kareem, who (she always claimed) told her, “I don’t play basketball, lady.”
I’d be shocked if she ever even saw that movie or knew it had become a joke. It was never a story told like “it was just like in the movie.” More like, “he was rude to me.” Like she was harboring a grudge.
OMG. I never knew that. Now it makes the appearance even funnier.
He still looked mad af that game
He always looks cranky
IIRC, that was a trash ass game by the Lakers. So to have his record be broken in that specific game would put a sour taste in most people’s mouths imo.
What’s worse to me is how they stopped the game with like 10 seconds to go in the quarter
That’s the way he looks
I feel like it’s mainly 90s players who constantly hate the current era. Gervin, Larry Bird, Kareem, etc. have all found things to like about the modern game.
DrJ, Big O (hit or miss) have also been very positive about modern greats.
Basically, people who made their money, made their marks on the court, are genuinely happy and have no need to smear others. Look at Jordan, Kobe, Dirk etc, all very positive.
Gonna shout out AI and KG to that list too. Something I notice with the legends who uplift the younger generation is they all typically worked as hard as they could have. There’s no question about what they could have done or how far they could have gone cause they already gave the best they had.
I think those guys know very well what it takes to get to that level and continue the greatness for so long, as well as the scrutiny and the noise.
Yeah they’re mostly Gen X, the antagonistic lead brained generation.
I think this has more to do with the era they retired into than the era they played. 90s players like Barclay and Shaq retired into the era of cable sports and social media where the loudest, stupidest voices get attention.
There are many, but they don’t make the headlines like the ones who are salty. The other 2 of the OG Celtics Big 3 have been consistent on praising players after them, too.
Lmao there was a post where people were mad that the title called it an Ironman record and Parish himself called it an Ironman record
It’s an ironman record but it’s also a skill based. You don’t play this many games if you’re not a great player in the first place. The problem is people act like there can’t be multiple things going on at once.
People sneer on the longevity record. But to have the minutes record and the games record and still be playing at a high level? Amazing. I hope he comes back next season for the wins record too.
There’s a decent possibility he ends up #2 in assists as well.
He would for sure need an additional 2 seasons after this one to get to #2 for assists. As it stands he would need to avg 6.7 assists per game if he played all 94 between the rest of this season and the next, and he for sure will not be playing all 82 games next season.
That being said, I genuinely wouldn’t be surprised if he had 2 more seasons left in the tank. He’s still looking really really good on the court
The 2 seasons before this he put up 589 and 575 assist on 70 games. He’ll likely be closer to the #2 spot than that by the end of the season. Its more likely he needs twi seasons but its definitely not a forgone conclusion.
Best quality is availability.
Sure but a base level of skills are assumed for any longevity record in professional sports. No team is going to start a G league benchwarmer just because he is close to breaking a GP record.
Were they saying ironman records are only consecutive games played? i.e. Mikal Bridges or the NHL’s Phil Kessel.
I had that same thought at first after seeing the other post but it’d honestly make sense that they’d both just be different type of ironman records. Streaks vs. total games played. Pretty similar stuff there.
Reddit is allergic to nuance
Man I love Chief. Bird and Parish always give modern guys their flowers. McHale not as much.
McHale is a bit bitter due to what happened while coaching - since young guys didn’t respect him much, he’s not returned the favor. He was much more praising while on the wolves.
Probably the most impressive record LeBron has in my eyes
Over points?
It’s close but I do appreciate longevity a lot and he’s undoubtedly the best longevity player ever
In the current league where they play at record breaking offensive paces and efficiencies, and more and more superstars sit games. I agree this is more impressive.
[deleted]
Why? I just think being able to play over 1600 games and not only be the only one to still be a starter after that many games but to still be an all star is absolutely wild. Not discrediting any of his other records but if you asked me 12 years ago I would have told you there’s no way LeBron catches this one
Your response speaks more about you than him
Always show love. Shout out to the legend
Chief was an amazing player and an even more amazing human!
S/O to Chief, Louisiana legend
Gramps recognize gramps
Someone tell Parish that I’ve got a message for him too: “You a legend”
Anyone else surprised The Chief had the record originally? I would’ve thought Kareem, Stockton, Malone, VC, or AC Green would’ve held it given their other longevity.
He played 350 more NBA games after he turned 39, that is some going. Kind of crazy the previous record holder is actually a guy that did 4 years of college basketball, didn’t play in the league until he was 23.
Even as he was playing in the 80s and 90s, he was legendary for his workouts, for his martial arts.
It was genuinely awesome seeing him win another ring with the Bulls in his 21st season in 1996-97, even though he was the third center behind Longley and Wennington.
Hail to the Chief!
Oh wow, that’s crazy. Several NBA seasons worth.
It is refreshing to see someone with no hate or envy in their heart. Salute to Parish for being gracious and offering well earned kudos. A lot of people could learn from this type of gesture and mindset. Truly a standout when taking into consideration the current media environment where everything is about hating and negativity.
Wouldn’t anyone who breaks that record deserve it? It’s just games played
If Bronny got subbed in to play 2 minutes at the end of games 1612 times, he wouldn’t deserve it
respect to robert parish for giving him his flowers for lebron to have that kind of longevity in this era and still be elite is just absurd, he really does deserve that record
Respect!
The Chief has ruled.
Slim with another W. The man is a gracious real one!
The ogs starting to show bron love I wonder what’s gonna happen when he’s done fr fr
He look like 50 cent when he lost all that weight for that movie I can’t remember
Bron has played 25% more minutes than Robert Parrish
Imo Parish is arguably the most underrated 50th and 75th greatest player in NBA history.
He was the 2nd option for two Celtics NBA Championships!!
Dope to see even the old legends paying respect.
Parish on the Bulls once got in MJ’s face and told him “unlike these young guys, I have rings of my own. I’m not so enamored with you.”
Real one.
Parish and James used to play together in high school.
This is how you should act as an old timer
love when older players aren’t salty about these things and congratulate broken records and historic events.
Parish is just the sweetest old head
Unc is gonna break the record for years lived at this point
Anyone else read that quote waiting for the “but…”? Glad at least one legend can just appreciate today’s game without talking shit.
I mean, he more than deserves it, to play at a level that he does and play that many games is nothing short of insane.
NBA Winner Robert Parish
Non-hater old head 🫡
Game recognize game
He deserves it? No shit, it’s not like it can be argued… lol
Why are the older legends so awesome when it comes to current players, while the mostly Gen X and some old Millenial players fucking suck
Appreciate him coming out and saying it. Thanks Chief and as always…FUCK BOSTON!
I see Russell Westbrook built Parish’s house.
I thought “ironman” was consecutive games? Is it just games played in the NBA? In other sports it’s definitely consecutive games.
Thought this was big boy radio
The Chief is always class
Ironman record?
I first associated him with the Bulls growing up.
KG was the best player on a Celtics title team, so it depend on how you value that
plus KG brought back the Celtics so fuckin much from Brooklyn lol
Thought that was 50 cent when he had to get skinny for that movie.
Chief!!! Looking good . Hate the celts but boy - Parrish and Mchale were badasses
Somewhere right now Shaq has just gone out to a random court and is dunking on primary school kids. He has to put the balance back into equilibrium after an ex player, and a big man, actually praised a current player.
Parish being genuinely gracious about losing his own record says a lot. Most players would at least be a little salty, this was a classy message for a real milestone.
Hear, hear! The man has spoke.
The Celtics were a great team.
The Chief
“He deserves it” well yeah, he did it lmao
The Chief speaks 👍
Guess only guys who played in 1990s are the most salty ones.
Very bold statement to claim that a player who plaid 1,611 games deserves to break the record by playing in 1,611 games.
My favorite year of basketball. The 1985-1986 season. An amazing Celtics team. Ange, McHale, Parrish, Bird, and many others. Was so great to watch
Nice to see a legend who actually loves and respects the game still!
If there’s one thing you can’t critique LBJ on, it is his longevity.
It’s refreshing to hear old heads complimenting the younger players(even if its a 41 year old Bron) who break their records! Kudos to Robert Parish!
