Sports trash talk isn’t something you can regulate and officiate. It’ll always be a part of sports because it’s a way to get an edge over your opponent, and it worked in this case. It got Luka frustrated which is what Goga was trying to do.

It’s impossible to create rules around what you’re allowed to say to people on the court. What if I go up to someone and whisper something terrible in their ear? Should they go tattle on me to try to get a tech? What if I deny it? Who should the ref believe? Then you could even have a situation where players are lying about other players swearing at them to try to get techs.

I do believe that Goga actually said this. But I don’t think that he should be penalized for it. If he screamed that in English in Luka’s face so everyone in the front row could hear? Sure, give him a tech. But he didn’t.

If it’s not disrupting the game and the refs don’t hear it, just move on. We can’t have a system of rewarding tattling to the refs. I don’t think either of them should have gotten techs for this. And I definitely don’t think Goga should receive further punishment because Luka’s telling on him.
