Yeah. People here saying that it is weak D by Banchero but JJ designed a play where Luke had to run through the top 3 options of the Lakers ( AR, then Luka, then LBJ) to muddle the switching then LBJ times his cut so that Luke will not hit Paolo which is usually the indicator for Paolo to switch.
Yeah nobody, Lakers fans included, thought Luke was taking the final shot. I absolutely thought it was going to one of the big 3 and was shocked when I saw Kennard open and Smart throwing the perfect pass to him

It’s actually a pretty brilliant play. He had LeBron, Luka, and Reaves all start at the top middle left, Luka and Reeves head towards the right side of the court, LeBron sprints to the rim and peels off to the right, all while Kenard is on the far right and just slowly drifts out to the left unnoticed. Most players are going to assume one of Luka, Bron, Reaves are getting it so it was an excellent time to gamble Kenard might get lost in the wash.
looking at the replay, its 2 exact same plays, and Magic made crucial mistakes on both plays.
first play. Suggs made the mistake, tagged Reaves on the corner when De Silva was already tagging him. leaving Bron wide open. to which Banchero covered nicely. could’ve been the game-tying play.
second play. Reaves fell down on the wing and was out of the play. Banchero tagged Bron’s cut because it was the exact same cut as earlier, when Bane was already covering Bron. that’s how Kennard got free.
The play right before this was very similar with 4 seconds left… they found Lebron almost wide open under the basket. But Banchero blocked Lebron’s layup. I think the Magic were trying to prevent the exact same thing from happening which 9 times out of 10 would result in Lebron getting an easy bucket - it was an amazing block by Banchero (if it was indeed clean; Lebron thought he got fouled)

I am trying to decide who between Banchero, Da Silva, or Bane is more at fault, but I decided that the play was just really well designed.
I’ve watched it a fair amount. I blame Bane and Paolo. There was clearly miscommunication on whether to switch or stay with their man. Bane was on Bron and should’ve told Paolo not to switch. Paolo should’ve noticed not to flash to the paint with Bron. Miscommunication beat them. If Silva had stayed with Luke then Luka is wide open too.

Based on Paolo’s movement, it appears that he and Bane already planned to switch and he would get Luka. But when he saw Tristan covering Luka he got confused because Luke Kennard was not in the equation.

That’s a well-run play. Relies on one defender being a bit of a fool, but I guess in that sort of situation it’s easy to tense up and overcommit to the wrong player
I don’t think Paolo was a fool in this situation..If you look at how the play is designed, LeBron was positioned in a way that Paolo won’t see that Luke was already moving through Austin and Luka’s defenders. LeBron also timed his cut in a way that Paolo will still not see Luke’s movement as he was looking at both LeBron and Luka. JJ designed a heck of a play.

I love this because you can scrub the video at different times and fine out who really knows ball. I’m talking about the moments when the pass is thrown to when Luke jumps for the shot. There are a handful of Magic fans that immediately put their hands on their heads, surrender cobra style, that know this is the worst possible chance of winning. There are also some Lakers fans who immediately throw their hands in the air knowing Kennard doesn’t often miss when wide open. Always love the little details in the crowd.
