Dell Curry awaits his jersey retirement in Charlotte, his sons, Seth & Steph Curry are in attendance.
“Steph rubs something on his lips.” Do you really not know what chapstick is my guy
I’m losing my mind bro, OP really left it open to interpretation what that mysterious substance could be
Performance enhancing balm perhaps?
Lip balm with menthol so he can Lance Stephenson-LeBron his next opponent and make his opponent’s ear all weirdly icy and his opponent gets sexually weirded out into having a bad game.
Bull’s secret stuff
As long as it’s not deer antler spray.
This entire post is ridiculous lol.
He’s wiping his ass with something (I guess he took a shit?)
And matching OP’s passive voice construction it’s: (I guess the toilet got shitted?)
Imagining someone saying that in person made me laugh.
We got MrBuckBuck ragebaiting before GTA6 im sick
How could you u/mrbuckbuck? I believed in you! You were supposed to be a hero!
I put on my robe and wizard hat
I just had a Vietnam flashback
Lol it’s just lip balm
They must have got dried
2.4M karma, I doubt it
Crunk juice stick
Steph has tied a metallic thing around his left wrist. Is this a callback to slavery? Stay tuned for more
I don’t know why but this reminds me of Charlie Kelly’s pointy feet line. 😆😆
It’s the Burt’s Bees too, not even super bougie.
“If you smile fast enough, your lips will bleed” - Kevin Hart roasting Kenny Smith
My coworker told me he never uses lotion. Some savages live among us lol.
I’m a professional street walker and I would recognize that SuckySucky5000 cherry red lipstick anywhere
(I guess they got dried)
literally in the body text
bro LMAO
Lifetime Hornets fan here.
Important context is that Dell was the very first Charlotte Hornet and has worked for the team, in some capacity, for basically its entire existence.
He means a ton to the fan base and that’s what this is about.
Obviously he didn’t do it alone, but he’s regarded as the guy who helped bring professional basketball to the city and has hung out ever since, giving it everything he’s got.
If you’re here to make snarky quantitative arguments about the stats, you’re missing the point.
I had no idea. Seems like his good work has been kept local. Glad to see him his get his flowers.
My first thought was I wonder if this happens if Steph isn’t Steph and I was immediately answered. Thanks!
he spent 10 years here as a player (when the team was the most relevant it’s ever been) and i think this is year 17 or 18 as a broadcaster. so he accounts for 27 of the 36 years this franchise has existed. it’s the combo of those two things, and has nothing at all to do with Steph.
as far as purely on-court contributions, Kemba should be next.
What a world we live in where people think Dell Curry is only successful cuz hes a nepo daddy
kemba is next and last until hopefully someone from this team deserves the honor, unless they want to give gerald wallace a petty retirement or something we legit got no one else.
i’m sure Gerald’s not getting it, since we keep getting out that #3 jersey, but I hope we go back and honor him at some point for being the face of the Bobcats all those years
I really see them retiring 23 soon too.
It’s deserved but controversial for a lot of reasons.
If Steph wasn’t Steph the rest of r/nba wouldn’t care. Just die hard hornets fans.
There was a bit of time when he was just an ambassador but yeah he’s always worked with hornets.
Similar to Mugsy who also never really left Charlotte and has an ambassador role
I dont even understand the snarky comments cause retiring as the organization’s all time scorer, and being considered an all time great shooter seems like plenty justification just by itself.
My question is why’d it take basically a quarter century lmao
Well, the hornets were in New Orleans for a bit, then they came back here but MJ was a shitty owner and nothing of substance ever happened.
New ownership group has been phenomenal
Usually, sports teams owners have more success when operating as drunk gamblers than pro athletes do as drunk gamblers but MJ somehow managed to do the opposite.
Might’ve wanted to wait until Seth or Steph got to wear his jersey for a bit
What the other commenter said, but also new ownership recently. Glad they’re doing it.
Not every jersey who gets retired has to be a 50 greatest, they just have to have sentimental value to the fanbase and team.
We have Avery Johnson’s and Sean Elliot’s jersey retired. I wouldn’t be mad if we retired Patty Mills, Matt Bonner, Danny Green, or basically anyone else who meant a lot to the team. Those banners are history and will get younger generations to look into who that was and what they did.
But that’s just my opinion. I’m sure many others see it differently.
There’s about 5 role players i’d pick over Matt Bonner
Stats are cool but connections to cities mean more imo
Absolutely. It’s why I loved Tommy Heinsohn’s homerism as an announcer. Dude was involved with the Celtics as a player, coach, or announcer from basically 1956-2020. This dude lived and breathed the Celtics more than anyone.
A lot of players had their jerseys retired out of sentimental value, how much they mean to the community. It’s not always about stats or rings. Anyone who thinks Dell doesn’t deserve this honor, are just being ignorant.
We also love Dell in Toronto.
I appreciate the context because I was a bit surprised. Thanks. Props to Dell
Not to mention that’s he’s a part of the most goated commentary duo in all of American sports. I like Jacob Tobey and Sean Elliot, but it’s always the Charlotte broadcast whenever we play you guys.
I love diehard sports fans like you, I wish my lifelong team was the Lakers often but without the Lakers I wouldn’t have so much love for basketball and other sports
I remember really really enjoying watching the hornets play back in the 90s. Grand mama. Zo.. muggsy. Kendall gill Was always cool to see when dell would come off the bench. There was always a boost Probably my second favorite team
For anyone wondering why we’re doing this, Dell Curry is Hornets basketball through & through.
I’m actually confused why people are questioning this. I thought it was common NBA knowledge?
Come on man you know no one actually watches basketball in here
I mean, as a Warriors & Steph fan, I respect that everyone else has watched our basketball over the past 10+ years, if only glancing.
Many, many fewer have watched a Hornets game, let alone know their history
To be fair, it’s mostly been a tough watch. Why would they lol
I mean half this sub probably grew up in the curry era lol.
You’d be surprised how many people don’t know about the original Wardell
But every time Steph has been in the finals, they show Dell and talk about it at least a time or two, no?
Idk I started watching in 2022 and even I know the Dell Curry connection lol.
Sorry I was locked up in a Thai prison for the past five decades
Boy do I have some news for you..
I’m more confused on why it took so long
Look at Curry man so inspirational
All three of them
Which one?
Sydell she so fine and inspirational
I find her face pretty hot but i find the majority of my male peers seem to think of her as female Dell Curry
That’s what makes her hot
Mike, Dan and Tony. Oh wait
all three of the Curries
Panang, Red, and Pineapple
Raptors legend Dell Curry
Da Tree Dem.
TIL OP lives their life with chapped lips
“This dude just rubbed some shit on his armpits?”
“met a guy who runs their body through water and rubs this bubbly stuff on themself”
(I guess he got dirty?)
I was about to say it’s called chapstick my dude.
Lip balm is just a scam that just makes your lips temporarily moistened in the short-term but overall dry in the long term. You ever notice how lip balm appliers constantly be re-applying at short intervals all the damn time but people who never use lip balm seem to be perfectly fine for long stretches of time? If you got perpetual dry lips without some weird medical condition, im assuming you just don’t drink enough water everyday
Just adding to the MrBuckBuck lore.
Sweet family moment
You dressing up???
Dad said we gotta look good fml guess I need to wash my dress shirt
Steph is a fellow Burts Bees chapstick user my goat just like me
only non-Hornets fans complaining ITT
As a complete neutral, very happy for him and sounds like Hornets fans think it’s well deserved for all he’s done. Dell Curry and Eric Collins are my favorite casting duo to listen to when I can.
It was dell curry night in charlotte years ago when they held a halftime ceremony for him. Steph came out after halftime and dropped 28 pts in the 3rd quarter.
Was Dell that good?
He’s the very first Hornet and he basically never left Charlotte
He’s important.
I didn’t know that, that’s huge
He’s literally been with the organization for its entire existence
It’s not just about his playing career - he’s been a fixture for the Hornets forever (commentator since 2009 I think? and involved in the community)
Ah true I forgot about his commentator role with the Hornets
Hell yeah!
Father and son being “that guy” for different franchises is pretty fucking dope.
Steph was “that guy” for the NBA as a whole lol
Here I thought they already did this a long time ago.
Jordan gave him a honey comb ring of fire type celebration once we got the records back.
The new owners decided to go ahead and retire it
Steph uses lip balm, wow. Shocker.
it’s burt’s bees pomegranate you uncultured swine
They better be in their Sunday best dammit!
Where’s Ayesha Currys mom
The Curry’s
The real Wardell
Dell Curry gettin his jersey retired for nuttin out Steph Curry
Warriors should also retire Dell’s jersey, after all he’s the one who made Steph
Very Deserved, Dell was a great player for Charlotte for a long time.
Steph being classy, per usual. WTF Seth?
Dell Curry a legend,
for giving us Steph
They retired his jersey as a show of love to the curry family. Hail mary for them to get Steph to sign with the hornets
Not really. He was the first Hornet ever and has been with the org for 30 years. Hes beloved
Hail mary? Lmao dell is a legend in charlotte.
That said Steph is a panthers fan and is rooted in the city, I 100% expect him to be a hornet before he retires. Warriors have to rebuild for the long term at some point and if we can get Tony Parker we can get anyone 😂
Problem is where do you draw the line? The retired role player turned GOAT Drink Handler for the team? Retire his jersey too? Jersey basketball retirements should only be for basketball. Not community organizing or front office functions. Thats why I didn’t like Yao going in the HOF. What did he do? Ok Made ball popular in China for a little while. . Okk… . And…. That shouldn’t warrant HOF inductions when you got guys with way better careers not even in there. You start throwing everyone in the HOF or retiring their jersey, and then it means nothing. May as well just give them a “Thank you” trophy
Dell was the first hornets ever, played for 10 years there, won 6MOTY which is pretty much the only award the hornets have ever gotten outside of Roy, was on the team in the best years. And has been a big part of the franchise as a commentator for like a decade. This is deserved.
You’re really pressed about this huh?
This is a brittle spirit
What do you mean, “where do you draw the line.”? There is no line. It’s literally up to each individual team to decide what jerseys to retire; it’s not like there is an official rule book for jersey retiring.
I don’t know how Charlotte fans feel here but some teams are way to loose with jersey retirements. There are other ways you can honor someone
He’s getting the jersey retired more for off court stuff than on court stuff. He’s basically the team ambassador around the city and everyone loves him
Sure I totally get that aspect, which makes retiring his jersey even weirder to me. I just think there are other ways to honor people and if statues are the ultimate honor then jersey retirements should be close behind in terms of rarity
Yeah well we don’t have anyone else, Laker boi
Bet he’s never been to LA either
So don’t retire any jersey until someone is actually worthy…
Have you considered this: get fucked
Why so angry over this?
James Worthy didn’t play for Charlotte.
For the Lakers that sentiment makes sense. This is about the hornets.
Most Laker take ever. Let them have their moment.
Most flairless take ever. Let me share my opinion.
I’m a Warriors fan. I’m not mentally invested in this sub enough to add a flair. I’m not even sure I know how.
It’s not worth it regardless. Way too many people in this sub don’t even engage with comments, they just look at flair and go “Lol Lakers fan complaining about FT’s” “Warriors fan complaining about dirty play” “Celtics fan complaining about biased announcers” as if these are some type of gotcha.
I mean he got the key to the city too
What’s weirder is jumping in to scrutinize another team’s jersey retirement.
I’m not scrutinizing I’m just having a discussion lol
Don’t get personally hurt over a strangers opinion.
[deleted]
The hornets are 36 years old.
Dell curry has been working for the hornets in some fashion for 33ish years.
Not to mention he’s top 5 in pretty much most team stats
Sure, but it’s not like the Hornets have a lot of legends to honor
I know they weren’t there for long but Johnson, Mourning, Rice, Bogues, etc would be cool to add to a ring of honor type thing.
Jordan did that 10 years ago
Dell is more important than everyone else on there so he deserves this
Confident ignorance. Amazing
That franchise doesn’t have a good reason reason to retire anyone’s jersey, or really to celebrate anything at all, so they’ll have to settle for retiring the jersey of a 12ppg shooting guard. They don’t have as lengthy a history of sucking as the Clippers, but they’re on the same level as far as win pct.
Yep. Devalues the whole thing. Kind of like some questionable names being put in the HOF..
Why? Jersey retirements are specific to each team. Charlotte retiring Dell Curry’s jersey doesn’t devalue any of the jerseys hung by the Spurs. People on the outside telling a team/community how they should honor their own players always sounds ridiculous.
Yet to see a single hornets fan have an issue with it
Thank you. I wanted to say something but I have no reason to argue with these village idiots lol. Dell has been with the club since inception and is really the first jersey we’ve retired. Idk why I got lakers and spurs fans up in here gatekeeping.
People on the outside telling a team/community how they should honor their own players always sounds ridiculous.
Especially when it comes from fans of storied franchises.
We literally do not have a single retired jersey besides a player who died in a car accident outside the arena. Why does a spurs fan care about what the hornets are retiring lol
Manu Ginobili and Tony Parker.
Retiring his jersey? I mean no offense, but the guy didn’t really do much to warrant it. LOL. Dude was a 12-14ppg player LOL. Larry Johnson I can see. But not this dude
In the expansion draft, he was literally the first player they picked. He played there for a decade, and at the time of his retirement, was their all-time leader in points. He’s been working as a color commentator for them for 17 years and counting. Dude is undeniably a pillar of their franchise, even if the accolades aren’t really there
do spurs celtics and lakers fans act obnoxious on purpose during every small team jersey retirement? there’s no way you guys are bewildered every time something like this occurs
Not all of us. I think it’s an awesome gesture, and kind of overdue tbh. Honestly, I think the Celtics have too many jerseys retired.
He’s worked for the hornets for pretty much the hornets entire existence
Go focus on your own team
He’s been their color commentator for a long time too
Derek Harper got his number retired with the Mavs in similar fashion
He was the first hornet ever, leads a couple of our all time stats, part of some of our best moments as a team, and has been with the team twenty years post nba career. We’re retiring his number because he really shows what we want a hornet to mean.
Spurs literally have role players jerseys retired lmao
Well he was the franchise leader in points and 3s until Kemba…
But that’s not the point at all, he was much more than a player for the Hornets.
10 years with the franchise as a player, franchise leader in games played, 2nd in points and then been a part of the organization for pretty much forever. That’s pretty reasonable. Jersey retirements don’t have to be about how amazing a player you were for the team. Sometimes it’s just about being a meaningful part of it.
Is it that dissimilar from the Spurs retiring Sean Elliott’s number?
He was also a 14 ppg scorer who became a color commentator.
Or even worse, Bruce Bowen, whose only accolade is being the worst starter on the Duncan/Robinson championship teams
