While guard Terry Rozier remains on the Miami Heat’s roster, his release is expected in the coming weeks.

Rozier likely won’t be on the Heat’s postseason roster, according to a league source.

With Rozier away from the team and not expected back this season in the wake of his Oct. 23 arrest stemming from a federal investigation into illegal gambling, the Heat is expected to waive Rozier before the end of the regular season to open a roster spot to add a player for depth in the postseason.

So I know we’re well past the usual deadline but is he hypothetically eligible for the playoffs?

I know usually if you’re released this late in the season, you aren’t eligible to play in the playoffs (we did this with Ben Gordon years ago for being a locker room cancer) but does Rozier having not appeared in a game for Miami all season change anything in regard to that rule?

Even with everything around him, if he’s cleared to play, I could see a team desperate for backcourt scoring kicking the tires

Nobody is that desperate to want to touch a player arrested for gambling just for the playoffs. If you need Terry Rozier to put you over the top, you weren’t winning anything anyway. If you’re good enough, you don’t need him.

No team is going to risk the PR nightmare of being under the microscope and being over analyzed wondering if he’s engaging in more illegal activity. Not only is this a massive locker room distraction, it puts you in a position where bad faith actors are going to spread in the media and all over social media things like “look at this team fixing games!” Just because he missed a shot or turned the ball over. It’s simply not worth taking a flier on a guy who is going to give you like 12 points off the bench and probably isn’t in game shape. I’d trust any playoff team’s current 8th man over him.

The only comp I can find is Jack Molinas back in the 50’s arrested for a point shaving scandal. He was suspended and never played another NBA game. Rozier is probably done playing unless he’s cleared of the charges. Rozier is 32 and not a star. It’s not like he’s some promising young player.

Edit: 12 points is really generous. I had to look up he was 32. He was averaging 10 last season. After a year off the guy is giving you like 6-8 PPG. Absolutely nobody wants him.

The obvious solution was to waive and stretch if they wanted him off the roster. I don’t think the commissioner can just choose to not count salary against the cap without suspending him, and the league would have lost that arbitration if they tried.

I suspect he’s done in the NBA. I laid it out in another comment but he’s 32 and hasn’t played in a year. If he’s not cleared and best case is on parole, no shot he ever plays another NBA game. If he is, he’s probably pretty washed after this much time off at his age, he might get a training camp deal or minimum and have a short stint on 1 or 2 teams for maybe 1-2 years on the end of a bench. Career role players don’t make comebacks after that much time off at that age. Maybe overseas would be different but idk enough about that
