[Lowlight] Luka baits a foul and misses all 3 Free Throws
For how good of a shooter he is it’s astounding how relatively bad Luka is at hitting free throws
He’s more of a shotmaker than a shooter
It’s the same reason why he’s not really automatic on wide open shots
Is there any other player than Curry and lillard that are both? At least at the superstar level
He has bad power transfer on his free throws. The ball gets to his set point, then his knees extend at the same time he releases. His jumper has a more fluid power transfer, the ball is still moving upwards as his knees extend, and the release occurs after.
so he just needs to step back on his free throws
genuinely don’t know why some players don’t just step a few inches back and do a jump shot tbh
Because Luka, despite being “bad” at free throws is shooting 77% from the free throw line.
Most NBA players are probably not shooting better than 77% on 16 foot jump shots.
I think they easily do. It’s just worse when playing an active nba game that their percentage drops.
Maybe in a gym, when they get 100 shots to get into rhythm.
But only two at a time after sprinting up and down the floor?
No way.
Yea exactly honestly if they are shooting 19 ft actual jump shots the average would probably be around 60% in game
I said some players, not Luka, but tbh I wouldn’t be surprised if players could hit 80% on a wide open, non active gameplay middy.
[jimmer freddette could for sure, and he didn’t last long in the nba]

Did nick van excel do this?
He’d shoot it farther back but didn’t jump
Ya, just looked it up on YouTube. I guess he shot better after moving back.
Derek fisher used to shoot like 2 ft off center because his FTs drifted so far to the left
Not sure, but Word B. Free and Quincy PowerPointdexter did iirc.
Its a pride thing, same reason why they don’t underhand anymore
Are you allowed to jump on free throws? Genuine question
A jump shot on a free throw?
If they suck at free throws, why not?
It’s against the rules to move over the line?
There is no rule that says you can’t jump on a freethrow lol.
The only rule is that you cannot land beyond the line
It’s against the rules to go over the lines. Most players’ natural shooting motion carries them forward a fair amount. You’d have to start way farther away. I don’t know if that would be actually advantageous.
Read my original comment, a little slower this time. “…step a few inches back…”
The only rule I’m seeing is that the plane of the freethrow line cannot be crossed until the ball it’s the rim. You can still shoot a jump shot so long as you don’t cross that plane before that.
Double step back might help him better
That and have someone try to defend him
would he be better off not flexing his knees on free throws? take that timing element out of the equation.
No, I don’t think so. You want that natural power transfer. To oversimplify, a basketball shot has a balance and blend of up and out forces. Generally speaking, legs generate the up force and arms the out force.
if you don’t use your legs at all, your arms are responsible for all of it, and the more responsibility they have to take on, the more variability and room for error.
Similarly, if you delay your leg extension until it’s simultaneous with the release, your arms are still doing too much of the up force, because the power from your legs hasn’t transferred to them.
So an effective shot does see the ball move up first (like Luka does), but as the ball is traveling up to the set point, the legs should be extending and initiating the up force. When the ball reaches the set point, the power moving up from the legs joins the arms and ensures that all the arms have to do is push the ball out at the target.
I think ray Allen barely bends his knees during his free throws
Why should we listen to this? Youre just a reddit user not an NBA shooting trainer / coach
I mean he shoots 77%, that’s not horrible by any means
He’s a streaky shooter overall. Not like he’s Steph or something
80%+ would make me feel a bit more confident tbh
77% is very bad for a guard
No it’s not actually, it’s closer to average than you think
Maybe but for an All-Star / All-NBA guard it seems a tad low
The only top 30 ppg scorers this year shooting worse are Siakim and Zion. The only other guard in that range shooting under 80% is Ant at 79.6%, and besides Cade at 81.4%, all the other lead guards in that range are above 84%
That’s what she said
That’s kind of you to say, but I still don’t feel great about it
Maybe for a guard, but not for a guard who is a top 5 player in the league
That used to be true, FT% for guards has gone so downhill the last two decades or so.
Am I crazy or before it used to be unheard of for starting guards to be sub 90%?
Crazy
That’s crazy but yeah a starting guard used to have to be 80-85%
He’s just staying on brand
Funny considering his shirt number
Jaylen Brown shoots higher that and we act like he can’t shoot
He either hits 3s or hits FTs never both
I think all those long shots he takes destroys his rhythm at the ft line
It must just be a concentration thing for him. He only locks in when a fan is talking trash or he has a difficult shot to make.
He’s been that way his entire career too. I think it’s mental with him. A lot of times he will miss wide open threes but routinely hits impossible threes with a hand in his face while off balance. He doesn’t have a hand in his face when shooting free throws.
? Hes a shot maker/creator not the best shooter
Same thing goes for LeBron, they’re both at the top of the list of dudes with decent/good 3-point percentages but low ft numbers.
He is an average shooter but elite at getting separation off the dribble and getting off a clean shot
Average shooter lol
You kidding me with this comment? This average Celtics fan would legit see red and drop 84 if given the opportunity
free throws are harder to hit cuz of the pressure that u should be hitting these.
i always say that if free throws weren’t part of the game, i’d easily be on an NBA roster
Hi Ben.
And you’re always wrong
I’m pretty sure even then you’d have the same odds of making it as you do now
He is so ethical. He doesn’t control the whistle but he makes it up by not hitting any of them
Luka is an honorable man.
“When that the fans have cried, Luka hath wept
Ambition should be made of sterner stuff!
Yet Nico says he was ambitious;
And Nico is an honourable man
You all did see that vs the Wolves
I thrice presented him a kingly crown,
Which he did thrice refuse! Was this ambition?
Yet Nico says he was ambitious
And, sure, he is an honourable man”
— Kyries speech on the Senate steps after the Luka trade
I hate that he actually got the defender in a bad spot on the pump fake and didn’t try to make the shot. Because if he goes up normally for a 3 he might get fouled and also get a legitimate look to make the basket
ball dont lie
If Shai did this there would be 10k upvotes 🤨
Harden did this for 6 years and y’all called him hitler
I called him Hitler for hooking people’s arms but maybe that’s just me
Remember when players had their hands behind their backs while defending him? 🤣🤣🤣
😂😂🍿 he was but everyone doing it should get the same treatment
Then he went to the sixers and people called them Hitler and Goebbels.
Harden was doing much more egregious shit though. This is someone biting on a pump fake. He was a master flopper. Shai and Luka dont flop
And the fucking arm hooks, he was always playing for the foul. The head snaps, the falls on three pointers. he was unwatchable
shai snaps his head back after shoulder charging his defender and gets free throws from it like every single game my brother
Shai drives to the hoop and gets obviously hacked and he throws his head back to get the call
To be fair the first half of the season had a ton of anti luka posts.
Not close though, lets be honest
such bullshit. is this not a great pump fake that sends the defender flying into him…and he uses it to get a foul? how is that remotely close to bulldozing into someone and flailing their arms up the same thing? yall are dumb af trying to pretend its remotely close to the same thing
Is that what you tell yourself to feel better?
great argument from an OKC fan as awalys. way to change my view!
Buddy you’re mentally gone, why would i waste my time trying to change your mind?
more great points. well done. OK education making even Texans look good as usual. thanks.
This white knighting for SGA is annoying enough from OKC fans. Why are you doing it? Is your position really “there isn’t enough hate on this sub”??
I’m pointing out the discrepancy not supporting either of them with this
Its not a discrepency when Luka was hated on for a big chunk of the year for it like crazy, and people have mostly turned their opinions around on Shai after admitting he’s that guy. Now there will be random posts that get a lot of traction hating on shai, but a lot of the people upvoting those aren’t active or a very loud minority. On a sub with 2.6 million weekly visitors, 10k upvotes isn’t a crazy amount of haters.
last time somebody pointed out “the discrepancy” was when Ant fouled SGA and there was no call… Thunder flairs and other simps talking about “if it was the other way 10k upvotes”
two quarters later SGA is holding on to Rudy’s wrist like it’s the last life raft off the titanic and it’s sitting at 33 upvotes
so you’re not pointing out any real discrepancy, you’re crying about some fantasy world that only you and the Thunder flairs live in
I only caught the tail end of that OKC/T Wolves game but I definitely saw comments about the Rudy situation in the game thread
Calm down man it’s not that serious
You are lying, the rare SGA hate get deleted quickly while the Luka ones stay up
You must be joking 😂😂
Luka hate posts are 400 upvotes. Pro Luka posts are 2k upvotes. Shai hate posts average 5k upvotes. Pro Shai posts are 500 upvotes.
Luka is way more loved.
HAHAHA
There are just those that uses a flair of a different team but when they open their mouths you will see SGA’s nuts in there.
Lol hell no Im definitely not using a different flair nor am I an OKC fan
A grown man typed this out btw
We need to stop calling this foul baiting.
The pump fake has been part of the game for at least the last 35 years I’ve been watching, and it’s primary purpose is to get the defender off-balance/out of the way to give you a clear shot. If he is dumb enough to jump into you instead, well that has always been a shooting foul.
This is in a completely different ballpark to situations where an offensive player kicks out, or moves in a completely unnatural fashion, just to create contact and cause a foul, or my personal favourite, guys who just get fouled in a normal passage of play AND then decide to throw up a wild shot to get it called as a shooting foul (but in the case of Steph and Jokic, actually score most of the time, leaving the ref in a dilemma on what to call it).
My guy, he jumped into the defender to get contact.
Well that’s where this whole conversation always gets mixed up, because foul baiting is kind of used as a catch all term to cover things like pump fakes etc all the way to straight up flopping. But flopping and foul baiting are 2 completely different things. I think it’s OK to call pump fakes like this, as well as rip throughs etc foul baiting, so long as you don’t use the same term for actual flops.
I’d call kicking out/unnatural moves flops.
People would be so much more forgiving of it if he actually attempted a shot. He jumped into the defender to draw the foul and didn’t even care about shooting it.
Pump-fakes are a part of the game but this is ugly basketball. Care about a potential 4 point play not just getting to the line.
We don’t need to stop calling this foul baiting at all.
There’s nothing wrong with pump faking, and that isn’t the issue; Luka had no intention of going for the shot here. He’s playing for the foul lmao. What is foul baiting if not that?
baiting - to lure in, to entice, to attract
foul baiting is literally just doing something to make someone try something that results in them committing a foul
It is WAY too late, it’ll never be stopped calling baiting
But it is baiting, no? His intention was to get fouled, not take an actual shot at the basket. I’m sure he would have taken one if the opportunity was there, but given where he was, he saw a chance to get free throws and baited the defender into a “foul”. Hence foul baiting
I agree, my point was that no matter how you look at it that this will always be baiting
this is the best comment here
“BuT WhEn He dOeS iT He AcTuAlLy gEtS FoUlEd” 🥴
I guess technically it is. But getting defender to bite on a pump is basketball.
Basketball is getting them to bite then using the space to make a shot. Not diving into the bite with no intention of making a shot to get a free throw. No one wants to watch that shit. I get that that’s how the rules are written but jesus, change the rules then. That shit is boring and soft.
jabari literally jumps into lukas landing space acting like luka completely flopped
Wait you actually watched the vid?? That doesnt fit our anti luka narrative tho
That’s a clear foul btw
Yeah even when Shai gets those calls to me it’s just good basketball, he beat the defender into having to foul him. Now when they flop by turning into pudding the second someone looks at them in lane…
i know people don’t like foul baiting, but i can’t help but shrug if you get someone in the air from a pump fake
A pump fake is not foul baiting. It’s been part of basketball for decades.
it’s literally baiting out a foul lol
If this was Shai war would be waged
2 lane violations, at least
Soft calls like that is why he’s always bitching for more
Yep. Like giving a beggar some change one day and now they are expecting it every time they see it. Don’t feed the animals as they say
Why is this shit even called? It’s so obvious he’s not even attempting a shot.
I’m sure this will get 4k upvotes and be on the front page in no time.
Nice username lmao
hot take: a foul shouldn’t be called, or it should be on the floor, if it’s obviously not a real attempt at shooting, like this…
What an incredible performance from him today. Absolutely hooping late game
Ball don’t lie
If this was Shai this would have 12k upvotes
The league needs to crack down on this crap, and I’m a fan of Luka.
On pump fakes? If you bite on a pump fake, its an automatic foul. And has been for decades.
if you jump straight up and down, why should you get whistled for a foul if the offensive player jumps forward into you with no intention of actually making the jumper?
The defender jump straight up did he? Jumped from behind the line and landed above the line…
no I’m saying in general when you said biting on pump fakes should be automatic
he jumped forward but it was to the side and didn’t even make contact with Luka. Luka is the one who initiates all the contact
he literally jumped into the defender
I love Luka but this shit ain’t cool
The defender also jumps forward into Luka… Idk what people are on about, this is the same shit that Kobe and Jordan did in the midrange. Luka just did it at the 3.
he was contesting the shot because Luka successfully baited him; that’s fine i got no issues with that
it’s when Luka jumps into him anyways afterwards where it’s dumb, like there is absolutely no reason to do that
It’s very easy to avoid, defender got outplayed
It’s all mental. He’s more Nick Anderson than Jeff Hornacek automatic.
Bron would’ve hit 1, smh
It’s the refs fault he missed those free throws😤
I watched the 4th quarter of this game then watched this, very funny
Wow that one was truly disgusting. Not even a semblance of a real shot
Ball don’t lie.
I saw at the next time out he put a towel over his head to hide his sin from God
That’s my ethical merchant
Rasheed Wallace moment
Give Luka that MVP. Dude is so nasty
BALL
Insane lane violations though???
Why is this type of fouling back? didnt stop calling this years ago?
conditions
Don’t let the bricks distract you from the fact the announcer just called Ayton one of the best screen setters in the league.
I mean that the d wade pump fake / defenders jumps into him, which is ethical gray zone to be fair, the offensive player does not initiate the contact.
MVP shit!
I thought we got rid of “lean in to the defender” fouls
Whatever happened to that
A foul? Are they crazy? That one wasn’t even close
Why is this still being called. You should have to be able to create a shot. And defense should be able to do what ever the can to stop you, if they jump, shoot around them, stepping to where they’re going to land is weak as fuck. So if an offensive player jumps you have to let them land, but if a defender jumps you can undercut them and they fouled you. Bullshit
he looking kinda fat again
Too much whining
Idk how we all can’t just agree that this drawing the foul bullshit is so dumb. Play the fucking game, this shit looks worst than soccer does
The Warriors made a living off this shit for years until Klay fucked his knee up doing it.
Ive said it before and I’ll say it again, Luka needs to pioneer the step back ft.
Then won.
you’re a little late
Nobody posted the clip so
usually people leave stuff like this for after the game if they’re late eh, do whatever tf you want, I’m not your mom XD
this happened an hour ago
Yeah and got 40 point triple double if he had 1 more rebound and hit crazy spin cycle deep 3 to seal the game after going off for other 3’s
We ain’t here to talk about what went well for Luka
