I think he genuinely handed the Thunder the chip with this move (credit to Presti for finding and making the deal too, of course).

The Thunder’s biggest weakness in their December stretch against the Spurs was their lack of shot creation outside SGA—a template other teams could follow to beat them (helped that Mitchell and JDub were missing or not fully healthy during that stretch).

Jury’s still out on health, but OKC likely has a month plus an early playoff round or two to get Mitchell and JDub fully acclimated. Until then, McCain is the pressure valve they needed to make their offense work when Shai’s off the floor or getting guarded by disciplined 1-on-1 defense.

Before, you could put a talented solo defender on SGA to make him work; he’d get his, but you’d keep everyone else out of rhythm. Now with McCain playing well, a fully healthy Thunder will have up to four initiators—they’re gonna be way harder to stop.

Obviously I’d love to see the Spurs make it as far as possible, but the stretch that made the Thunder look mortal looks to be in the rear view; nobody should feel good about their odds if they have to play the defending champs and they’re anywhere near full health.

You’re right that shot creation outside of SGA has long been the Thunder’s biggest problem, but I’m not sure how much McCain will specifically help in the playoffs. I love the kid, he’s super fun to watch, and is already one of their most electric offensive players.

But he’s definitely going to get targeted on defense. The Thunder ran into a similar problem last year with their shooting, because Isaiah Joe would get targeted and saw his minutes dry up. McCain’s defense has already markedly improved since he came to OKC, and maybe he can hold up for a couple important bursts of bench minutes in the playoffs. But I worry there will be some matchups where he won’t be playable. I guess we’ll see, but I think the McCain trade is more about what he could develop into in OKC’s system than it is what he can do immediately in the playoffs.

I feel like you might be able to get away with it in like 3-5 minute spark plug bursts. He doesn’t necessarily need to win you the minutes he plays, but he essentially gives your offense a chance to at least play the other team to a draw when SGA sits now.

Really interested to see how it all unfolds though, right now there are only maybe 2-3 teams in the league who can actually punish you enough to play him off the floor, and they’re all currently lined up to only play you in the WCF or the Finals so it’s a later problem to worry about regardless

The Spurs are the primary matchup where I worry he won’t be playable. All of Fox, Castle, and Harper will go right at him, and there won’t be any minutes where none of them are on the floor. You can usually hide McCain in bench minutes against end of the rotation guards (against the Nuggets, they had him on Bruce Brown, Wolves was Bones Hyland, Celtics was Ron Harper Jr, etc.), but that won’t work against the Spurs. We’ll see how things shake out, though. It’s at least nice for Daigneault to have another arrow in his quiver if he wants it.

McCain will get very limited minutes in Playoffs later rounds.

As good as he is, if you are now defensively negative you get relentlessly targeted every possession. It is why the Playoffs are a different beast.

This can work against teams with more limited offensive players, but couldn’t against someone like Denver.

So in short, its very match up dependent, but overall could see him winning us a critical game here or there If he sees the floor like Aaron Wiggins in G2 Finals (Strawther G6 R2 for Nuggets etc).

Joe is not the same player this year as he was last. He’s DEFINITLY the most improved player on this squad, outside of Mitchell. His on ball pressure, his rotations, his midgame, and his boardcrash has all improved DRAMATICALLY.

Gotta point it out: The Thunder have not had a trillion top picks. This is a misconception I see pretty often. They only have two top 10 picks on their roster: Chet and Cason Wallace.

The reason they’ve been special is their ability to get great value in comparison to where they draft guys. JDub was pick 12, JWill pick 34, Ajay pick 38, Wiggins pick 55, Dort undrafted, Joe off waivers. They have more guys on the roster who were second rounders or undrafted than they do lottery picks.

I’d say they’re different. Ajay attacks off the dribble more, and is a better finisher and defender. McCain can attack off the dribble some, and finish some, but he’s not as assertive with that area of his game. He’s most dangerous as an off-ball catch-and-shoot guy.

In some ways this was worse than the Hali trade for the Kings.

In retrospect it was a terrible decision, but at the time the vision of a team with Fox and Sabonis, even if not contenders, made sense. They also did very well until the Kings made even more bad decisions and killed their own hopes and dreams again.

What the heck was Daryl Morey thinking? He traded a guy with incredible upside that he may not draft again on this timeline. Give McCain another year or two and he could’ve developed into a fearsome trio with VJ and Maxey. Why were you in a hurry? So you could get a few more 2nd round picks?

This is just one of those examples where someone gets half too smart with themselves. Dumbass.

he had a good 7 game stretch (where the Sixers went 2-5) at the beginning of the season and that somehow became “he was gonna win ROTY if he didn’t get injured!!!”
