One thing I noticed today that’s a real “won’t show up in the stat sheet” thing is he was very disruptive off-ball in terms of not letting guys get the ball exactly where they wanted it. Knew when to front a guy, when to bump him off his spot, and when to let a guy in a bad spot get the ball before applying pressure. I’d guess he’s a film room maniac who knows a lot about guys’ tendencies.

It’s not necessarily “trash”, it just doesn’t represent what some people think it does. Placing it at the end of every row in the box score makes it look like it’s some sort of “rating score” or total relating to the individual performance, which it isn’t. It’s simply the score difference between the teams while that player was on the court.

In terms of +/- being a useful metric, it’s probably best for 3-5 man line-ups, over a decent sample size of games and minutes. That way, you can see what groups of players are working well or poorly together (if they are winning or losing their minutes together).

The plus minus stat is not a very good stat to look at.

If a player is on the court and his team mate suddenly got on fire and made all 7 of his shot (let’s say is all 3s) in a 8 minute span while the opponent missed all 7 of theirs, that player will be a +14. Whether he impacted the plays or not, he’ll be a +14. If is another way round, whether he is a fault or not, he’ll be a -14.

That’s the flaw in that stat. Blows my mind people take weight it so heavily.
