Look I’m not commenting on the whole free throw discourse, but based on playstyle JB should shoot way more FTs than either of them.

I think the problem with the top free throw people over the years is so many of them play away from contact and then they (smartly) only make contact when they know they can draw a foul. So for JB it’s like I have 10 contact drives per game and go to the line three times but then other player doesn’t even drive to the hoop once and gets to the line three times on contact 18 feet from the hoop.

Generally both Luka and Shai (1-2 in the league) play away from contact when they are trying to score. They both will initiate contact specifically when they see an opportunity to draw a foul. In my experience watching them, it’s incredibly rare for them to drive directly into contact and try to make a contested layup/drive. They will usually pull up into a floater if there is space, look for a couple pumps and then fade (Luka), or try to draw a foul by doing that arm grab as they approach the hoop and then chuck the ball up.

I obviously don’t watch either as much as JB, but IMO they both play smarter than JB but JB definitely plays with way more contact and physicality… he just generally doesn’t try to sell contact he tries to make the bucket.

Shai draws contact, but Shai is really good at positioning his body to get fouled. He slithers and worms his way into perfect places to create the contact. That’s very different than how JB plays. Brown has been playing a lot closer to Giannis’s style this season of bulldozing into the paint and moving guys with his strength. He’s been like that for years now, but he’s got it on turbo now.

Shai, I think plays a lot SMARTER with how he draws the contact. I think Luka and Brunson both kind of feather their foot on the pedal of being extremely physical and then pulling flop moves to get calls.

Probably 10-15 this season. I just don’t see him taking that many contested drives and then forcing layups in heavy coverage. He is way more likely to find an open man or stop short of the contested paint and shoot a stepback or little floater.

Btw it’s not an insult to Shai, it’s a compliment. I wish JB would not take on so much contact so often, but the bad decision to take contested paint shots more often would lead me to say he should be at the line more; even though it’s not as good of a basketball play compared to what Shai does.

I watched the Shai highlights vs the Celtics last week just now to check my bias, and he had 1 play in the 10 minute highlight video where he played into a contested paint. Doesn’t mean he doesn’t do it more often in other games, but it stood up to what I thought it would before watching.

Also not a Shai hater. I think JB is making genuine plays to the basket for most of his fouls. I think it’s fair to say Shai falls to the ground fairly easily at the slightest bit of contact (many times it appears to be legal contact). He’s not the only guy who does that though.

If there is anything where I have a problem with Shai and foul baiting, is when a player has one hand graze his forearm and he quickly goes for a shot. It’s really smart and he’s better at it than anybody since prime Harden, but that to me is what is not a basketball play. In those moments, you’re playing for a foul and not for a good shot.

But I enjoy watching him way more than I did prime Harden. And I honestly view what he does similar to how I view Jimmy Butler’s play style. It can be annoying sometimes, definitely when your team is playing against it, but it doesn’t make me want to turn off the game like I did when I was watching the 2010s Rockets. Luka’s no prime Harden, but he’s definitely worse than Shai imo.

Right Shai feasts in the midrange… I’d say he shoots FTs on mid range jumpers at a way higher percentage than a standard player in the league because he knows how to bait people in and create fouls. That’s a skill, it’s just one a lot of NBA fans wish didn’t exist. For someone like Jaylen who doesn’t do that, it’s gotta be hella frustrating but ultimately it’s on Jaylen for not taking advantage the way Shai does.

I agree too that they should be semi close to each other in FTs, but I would say Jaylen should be the one shooting more a game than Shai rather than vice versa.
