Per NBA.com stats (not sure if all of tonight’s games are included yet):

#3 in FGA/G
#2 in Drives/G
Shoots a high percentage of shots near the basket, yet has fewer FTAs than other players who shoot from further out, which generally means less contact
#13 in FTA/G

So maybe JB is an outlier who drives to the basket for a lot of layups/dunks. But if you actually watch the games, he just has a bad whistle.

You can pull up for a midrange, which is not likely to get you fouled, or you can drive and kick, which is just about guaranteed not to get you fouled. Still drives though.

A KD drive is not the same as a Giannis drive, which is not the same as a Draymond drive and so on. None of those players should expect to get fouls called at comparable rates because what they actually do when they drive is so different (and a defence is way more likely to be ok fouling a 60% FT shooter than a 90% FT shooter if we’re looking at guys like KD and Giannis), but people keep parroting that stat anyway.

There are also many ways to draw fouls that aren’t drives. If you’re a top shooter like Steph Curry, you’re likely to draw quite a few three point fouls that the Jaylen Browns of the world aren’t. If you’re a post player like Jokic you could very easily get fouled on a drop step or spin move. If you’re a lob threat like AD you’ll often get fouled on the contest. And so on and so forth.

Ty for this. The FT discourse is getting so tired at this point. I mean, I get hating the obvious foul baiting stuff, but just the obsession with # of FTs has gotten out of hand. It’s not like we need some pity FT system where every X number of drives without FTs guarantees you a trip to the line lol.

I also hate the idea that any specific player should get a better whistle based on their status, which seems to be a relatively accepted idea online - like, since so and so is a superstar, they should get more FTs

I can’t say I’ve watched every Boston game so I can’t be certain, but from what I’ve seen from him this year, when he’s actually fouled he’s usually getting FTs. And to be clear I’m not necessary sending him shots for shooting a lot of them, if you get fouled you should get FTs

That doesn’t have to mean more FTA though. Jaylen Brown is interesting as he’s got a lower FG% at the rim and a higher FT% than most other guys who have a lot of drives, so it’s not as beneficial for teams to contest hard and commit fouls on him as it is for others

For what it’s worth, the one time I reffed older kids, if they complained, I would lock in on them more to see what they’re complaining about. There were a few kids that just bitched after every play but some of them were valid in their concerns.

It’s not “rewarding” when I am just calling what I’m seeing. It was my first time doing it, so when people were complaining about missed calls, I just kept a closer eye on that player. Most of the time, nothing was actually happening and the kid was complaining.

This is a really weird comparison. JB’s usage is 36% (3rd in the league) and leads the league in drives per game. Reaves is at 27% and drives half as much as JB. If anything you proved the point that he doesn’t get enough whistles since reaves averages more FTAs per game than him

I don’t disagree. But everybody does it, and if it’s going to affect the outcome of games, you speak on it. If you watch a Celtics game you will see the amount of physicality Brown plays with attacking the basket, where other players will get more frequent calls for far less contact
