I don’t follow the WNBA but I guess Clark is supposed to be like top 5-10, from what I hear, with potential to be maybe the GOAT I am not sure. Either way, I guess she is supposed to be a lot better than Payton with respect to her own league who is starting games for the first time this season and not even top 50 in his own league. Sure he’d dominate the WNBA but that’s not the point.

A’ja Wilson is like the Michael Jordan of WNBA. She’s absolutely dominating all the record books. As of right now she’s got 4 MVPs, 3 Chips, 4 DPOY’s, leads the league in scoring almost every year. She’s still in the middle of her prime.

You know, I really don’t get where the disrespect lies with the Payton Pritchard comparison. It seems Caitlin just wanted to be compared to Reggie Miller, being a three-point shooting cornerstone of an Indiana franchise. But being compared to that talented of a male player should be taken as a compliment.
And Miller really didn’t have the kind of handle that she has. Her game is different. I guess people would have preferred a higher profile star like Curry though. .
Reggie also said on the air that he’d rather have two FT than one FT and the ball, so… let’s not go crazy.
EDIT: Yikes at these responses, guys. The only time two FT is better if there’s literally no time on the clock. And that’s it. That is the full list of scenarios. Put 100% FT shooter up there and a possession is still better.
that isn’t too crazy of a take. During Reggie’s era, the points per possession hovered around 1.05, so technically one FT and the ball is better, but the security of the second free throw could be better in some cases.
If I’m down 1 or 2 I’d absolutely rather have two FT than one FT and the ball unless Shaq is shooting them

Those series of moves are some of the most trained by a guard. I don’t have the ability to find and cut up an exact replica but I guarantee you could find guys like Curry and Brunson doing it the exact same way too. She’s probably practiced that route 800000000 times.
It’s safe to say that Reggie wasn’t being disrespectful at all, the man was sharing his HOF knowledge.
It’s a problem of framing. From one perspective, it’s a very accurate comparison - this post is evidence of that - and purely from that perspective, it’s not disrespectful at all.
From another perspective, Clark obviously has far greater respective impact and prominence within her sport, hence the awkwardness. What I find almost funny is that that perceptual gulf between them sells Pritchard short, when he’s proving himself to be quite a player and competitor so it’s awkward from that side too.
Was it the difference in impact and prominence that folks got enraged about? I thought it was the whole skin color aspect of it that made people immediately assume it was a lazy comparison (despite being highly accurate in terms of playstyle).
It was because he compared a top 10? 20? (Idk) wnba player to Payton Pritchard who is good but nowhere near that. Nobody cared that they were both white afaik
She finished 4th in MVP voting her rookie season. Pritchard is a very solid player, he is not her caliber in their respective leagues. Yes them both being white made it worse, but if he had compared her to Luka people wouldn’t have cared much. And if he compared her to any other 6th man who had never averaged more than 3 assists a game at the time, it would’ve been equally shit on.
Her obvious comps in playstyle are like Trae Young, Haliburton, or even honestly Luka. Pritchard isn’t a terrible shout as you can see they have similar moves, but when there are at least a few other guys there who are also All-Stars and have similar styles, Pritchard was just an odd choice.
I don’t really see the Luka comp.
Despite people thinking it is disrespectful the pritchard comp is actually pretty accurate IMO. The main difference is that while Pritchard is undersized in the NBA(6’1 vs 6’7 average) Clark is actually actually league average for the WNBA(6’0 vs 6’0 average). So basically pritchards skill set but taller relative to the league she is in. I think if Pritchard had his same skill set at 6’7 he would be a top 20 player easy.
.Caitlin clark shattered records in her rookie season and continued to do so in her second year before she got injured and is widely seen as one of the best players in the WNBA already whereas PP is a 6MOTY level type of player.
It’s like when people compare Aja Wilson to Michael Jordan; they play nothing alike but they are seen as the GOAT of the sport or Serena Williams to some average male tennis player who plays similar to her (I’m only using Serena as an example here because she’s said in the past that the average male tennis pro would beat her and that comparing men/women sport as 1-1 isn’t fair to either side). So while Reggie wasn’t trying to be disrespectful with his answer I can see how some people would find it disrespectful.

I don’t care that every NBA player would be MVP in the WNBA, that’s irrelevant to the point. It is somewhat dubious to compare a historically great woman athlete to a pretty good man.
I know Reggie didn’t mean it that way considering who his sister is. But his comment unfortunately enabled people like you to use it as a chance to shit on women athletes.
