Ant has been genuinely awful defensively for the majority of the season. Its incredibly frustrating. With Randle you already know he’s shit but with Ant, he can go entire quarters playing some of the best guard defense in the league, but simply refuses to do it.
The usage argument just does not work when you have Shai playing simply vastly superior defense, especially off-ball where Ant sinks way too deep into the lane and just falls asleep. Im not saying he should be chasing guys off screens and whatnot but like he should be able to guard the corner without getting back-cut multiple times a game.
It’s because they’re taking the regular season for granted. The back to back WCF appearances has gone to their heads.
They really think they can just flip the switch in the playoffs. Except by the time we get there we could be fighting in the play-ins for no reason at all with how healthy we’ve been and these bad habits will already be ingrained. A bad shooting slump over 2 games is enough to knock us out completely.
Who exactly runs the locker room on the Wolves? I don’t mean best player, that’s obviously Rocco Zikarsky, but the one who keeps everyone in line and focused on and off the court?

It’s kind of a problem with having Gobert on your roster over the long term.
He erases so many mistakes that I think over the long term playing with Gobert often ends up enabling a lot of bad habits. Towards the end of his time here in Utah the effort around him defensively just totally fell off, it wasn’t just a function of the poor defensive talent. You see a lot of the same habits developing in Edwards that happened with Mitchell, just totally phoning it in most of the time even though they both have the physical tools to be excellent defenders.
It’s a tough situation to coach because against bad teams you can absolutely get away with it since Rudy can totally defend 2v1 if a team doesn’t have excellent spacing. It just becomes an issue when you play great teams with great spacing and all of sudden even with Gobert you’re getting punished for getting blown by on the perimeter.
I can’t speak to Ant but Randle had this same effort with the Knicks. Randle I always thought had the tools to be an average defender but his effort came and went. Idk if it was due to the offensive load he carried with the Knicks but there was zero accountable for his lack of defensive effort
i always thought randle felt he was entitled to take plays off on defense because he had a heavy load on offense. but being a clear #2 next to ant its a bad look. its lazy and a product of his tantrums. his power walking in transition used to drive me crazy.
Ant does this in spurts, he’s really not a good off ball defensive player… but the pieces around him make an enormous difference. When he’s surrounded by high effort defensive players he genuinely looks like he gives a shit even if it doesnt go well.
Julius also so fucking moody he will torpedo the entire team if his ego takes even the smallest hit. Finch CANNOT bench or cut his minutes, or publicly criticize his effort in any way/shape/form so long as he’s on the team. Randle being immune to accountability 100% has a trickle down to the rest of the players. If he can give shit effort and jack up shots that in a sane world he has no fucking right to take there’s no way other players dont see it and think they can too.
Jules is just someone that can’t lock in on both ends for an entire season, he’s not mentally wired that way. It infuriated a lot of Knicks fans, and it’s worse now with teams not being able to take nights off like they used because even the bad teams are pretty good.
I won’t say he’s a playoff riser, but I don’t think he’ll be lazy like that in the playoffs. He was pretty great for the Wolves last year imo.

Breh he has all the tools to be one of the best defenders in the league, but he just aint doing it. He’s terrible at screen navigation and closing out in general. He can lock in at the end of games but we need more consistency throughout the game on defense from him cause we cant afford for him and Randle to be playing this type of trash defense

Ant can lock in and be great, but he has always had an issue since college where he just is cool disappearing for stretches in a game.
They just reinforce each other’s bad habits. They should have seen this coming. There needs to be an on court leader. What other (alleged) contender has such poor leadership at the top? Conley and Anderson are too old and irrelevant at this point to be leaders. Jaden spends half the game fantasizing about the post game blunt he’s going to smoke. Nobody respects Rudy.
They need a really powerful professional personality that can also back it up with his performance on the court. And I have no idea who that would even be, sounds unattainable for them.
