Jaylen Brown on hot mic after SGA draws a foul: “That’s not basketball!”
Celtics commentary was saying that they think the rules on this one might change next year. Yes it’s the rules today but imagine playing pickup and dropping ur shoulder into a guy and then calling foul on him.
The rule should be if your arm is tucked into your own body it doesn’t count for a foul
Yup defender arms straight up or down and the offensive player initiates contact then there’s no good reason for that to be a foul and seems like a pretty easy thing to fix.
They’ll fix it for the first month of the new season then abandon it
It might never get fixed for one team or certain players
Every game, there’s a play or two where I can’t help but think “That would be a foul if it was [insert player]”.
I’m ready to spend more time with my other hobbies if they don’t fix this and neuter Dort.
Once they gave him mvp, it was over for me never looked back.
Yeah.
It’s so bad.
I hate it especially when the offensive player drops a shoulder into a defender that’s vertical, and then the foul is called on the defender 10 times out of 10
(literally just for existing)
YOUR HONER HE WAS STANDING IN FRONT OF THE BASKET WHAT WAS I SUPPOSED TO DO?
Luka did this the other day on Diawara. It’s crazy that this is a foul. And yes, I am salty about it.
https://streamable.com/27tnhg
There’s a better angle from the baseline that showed Luka initiating the contact with his shoulder, then flailing back. But I can’t find it.
I might be the number 1 Shai glazer but they need to change this and set a clear rule. It is considered a foul by the rulebook but goddamn it needs to be change because it is so hard for the ref’s part to be consistent with this call.
It actually seems really easy for them to be consistent. It is just a stupid interpretation. Any veering directly into a defender should be a no-call. If the offensive player catches them in the air, or is able to get the rip through because the defender was stick their hand in that can still be a foul, but shoulder/forearm checking the defender alone should never result in free throws for the offense.
This is the stupidest fuckin call in basketball. Like, what the fuck is a defender supposed to do? Run the other way? Lmfao. Dumb ass shit
SGA gets like 5 of these a game.
That’s the real frustrating part about it. A select few dudes get this call and the rest of the league is just supposed to live with it because it’s within the rules lul. Get this shit out of the game. It’s a contact sport.
The NBA badly needs to fix this. Players get paid by owners based on productivity, and this is productive. It’ll only get worse. Owners get paid based on the entertainment value of the league, though, and it’ll suffer. Nobody wants to see all of the best players scoring points with the clock stopped after fouling themselves against a defender.
Shooting fouls should only occur when the person with the ball is making an earnest attempt to score. It’s insane how many of these fouls aren’t on actual shots. SGA and a few others are skilled at fouling themselves, but that’s not a skill we should value as fans.
lol good luck getting these calls without the blessing of silver
It’s a contact sport.
Compared to what? Cause even soccer allows far more contact than basketball.
Used to be
There, I fixed it
He’s just a master at the art. The head flail and the goofy face he makes every time really sells it.
I don’t know why, he looks like he weighs 50 pounds.
Yeah I agree, he is just a master of exploiting this. It’s like playing a game and you found a glitch and you keep repeating the same glitch to win.
Just mashing upper cuts in Mortal Kombat
Refs make it impossible to guard Shai. Celtics just had to let him get whatever switch he wanted and hope for the best because if you don’t play 3+ feet off of him, he’ll be given FTs.
I was thinking about this tonight too, are players backing off from playing hard D because he gets so many calls? It will be interesting when playoffs come, because historically the whistles don’t come as easy. I know they won it last year, but I hope the refs swallow the whistle in the playoffs and let them play.
They didn’t swallow it last year, they aren’t gonna swallow it this year.
Kuminga used to bait these 5 times a game and get no calls
5 of these per game (shoots 9 free throws) Lmao
Not even. Eight tonight. Meanwhile JB shot fourteen lol
Like, what the fuck is a defender supposed to do? Run the other way?
Preach. I get second-hand frustration on behalf of defenders when I watch this type of stuff. Completely warps the competitive balance between offensive player and defensive player when the defense has no legal recourse aside from conceding the basket.
And shai goes “OHHH!” here. I hate sga for this type of stuff man. He sucks.
I don’t get how you can be a basketball player and do this shit without being incredibly embarrassed.
Because stats = money
His team dont care if he scores 2 on a hard contested midrange jumper or 2 free throws. Points are all equal.
Defenders just need to start hitting him harder.
Sounds like a good way for your star player to get a Lu Dort elbow to the face.
He does that shit anyways.
Was going to say the same because it’s true.
Yea and it’s not even a foul if role players do it. Joe Schmo can’t just spam this move 20 times per game and the refs call it. Now he’s a superstar. Unless you’re Deni Avdija.
It was not an issue for quite a long time. Until flopping became mainstream with the top 3 players in the league. Hope they lock that shit down, cause i have turned off a lot of games this year after seeing this shit.
This looks even more egregious, SGA lifts Garza’s arm up up with his own off-arm pretending like he’s naturally gonna grip the ball with 2 hands, but really doing it just to pretend like Garza is hitting his arm, and then just throws his head back to exaggerate it.
Maybe the NBA just needs to take player health a little more seriously. You jerk your head back like that suddenly and maybe we need to get an independent specialist to pull you from the game for 3-5 minutes to check you for a neck or head injury. Just seems prudent.
Shame them into stopping lmao
Imagine Brunson/SGA having to sub off for 2 minutes after a snap, would be embarassing for them.
My least favorite is when they just lean into a defender after baiting him to jump. Like they don’t even make a shooting movement its so lazy
That one will honestly always be in the game in some form. It’s so hard to judge what’s a players “natural” motion when they’re close enough to go for a layup. I’m glad they’ve mostly taken out the version in the midrange.
And it also rewards players for getting defense to bite on a pump fake.
I remember when a pump fake bought you an open lane, not an obviously BS shot attempt.
Insane suggestion, but switch it to 1 FTA instead of 2 for this BS and see how quickly players switch to trying for legit shot attempts instead of hunting contact.
I dont know man. If they are at the three point line, the guy has been hanging in the air for two seconds only for the offensive player to lean forward, feet never leaving the ground, ball tucked at his waste, its pretty obvious to tell what’s going on.
I don’t mind this. The shooter at least made a play to get the defender out of position
Once the defender is in the air with forward momentum, they are in illegal defensive position.
You don’t get upset when a player goes into a defensive player and gets a blocking foul, just because the offensive player made contact with the out of position defensive player.
How many PPG fall off some players stats. I’d happily welcome this.
What’s even the point of waiting until next season? Just make it a no call from now on. Easy peezy.
People have been saying the rules will change on this since 2002 lol
I don’t understand how we got to a place where offensive players are allowed to initiate contact and it’s a foul on the defense lol.
Even with the rip through bullshit. If the player with the ball decides to hit the defensive players arms with his arms, how did we settle on “oh yeah defender has to give the offensive player room to get into shooting position.” What? Why?
I don’t understand why it has to be a foul at all. Just no call it and the players will adjust.
Exactly. They could easily remove these plays from the game by having the refs stop calling anything on them
Sure, they could. But then they wouldn’t be able to market Shai as a regular 40 point scorer.
The NBA basically exists for short headlines on social media. They assume most people aren’t watching the games, they are just looking at headlines. “Shai scores 48” is a social engagement magnet.
The foul issue is why I don’t put a lotnof credence in scorers like Shai in today’s game. While it might not necessarily be “easier” to score its certainly easier to get fouls especially when you are a star
I know this has been a topic of discussion in the past with even MJ but the product today just feels worse and worse
But think about player safety, think about the children /s
And Shai and Brunson will suddenly average 16 points per game
Brunson is actually only averaging 6 fts this seaon, actually quite low for a star of his caliber.
Brunson is at 5.8 FTA for the season
Nah the guy is phenomenal he’d still be elite, but that just makes it more frustrating to me. Great player focuses on pulling cheap tricks
There’s no way you believe this
Luka and SGA are the masters of this. Competition committee needs to adjust the rules and fix this. Reminds me of dame, Trae young and harden years ago where they would get their defender on their hip or behind them and stop on a dime and get their foul call
Yeah, they kind of fixed that by not letting guys jump backward or sideways into a player to get a call.
Didn’t SGA jump sideways into Westbrook and get the call last year?
I see the scissor kick from SGA called all the time
Atleast these plays are in the process of trying to score. That stopping with your defender running into you shit was complete nonsense, the literal definition of an unnatural movement
perfect question is why. it makes no sense.
if anyone asked an official or whoever established this rule to explain how this isnt unfair to the defense they couldnt give a good faith answer
because 120 to 120 pts a game makes the league more money than 80 to 80
does it though? i dont really wanna see a ton of pausing and free throw shooting when they ARENT fouls. game moves super super slow when that happens.
More pauses more commercials big bro $$$
Until people stop watching this shitty product.
The craziest part to me is that this has created a ridiculous amount of subjectivity. By making the rules super lenient and then selectively enforcing something that happens on almost every play is just a recipe for a poor product. Especially with egotistical refs. Like why do we know so many refs names??
In my opinion the only offense initiated contact that should count as a defensive foul is when you get your defender to leave his feet. If you baited him so hard that he jumped you deserve to get 2⁄3 free shots because that’s terrible defense
Yeah, but it wasn’t too long ago that baiting a defender off their feet just meant you could side step into an open shot, or drive an open lane around them.
Getting a defender up in the air to draw a foul has been a part of basketball forever, but it was basically exclusively down low next to the hoop.
Sports entertainment, gambling, corruption. Same cause for pretty much every problem in every sport
They’re ruining the product with this shit. I stopped watching because of OKC. I’m definitely not alone.
It’s not just them and it hasn’t been recent. I don’t understand why people didn’t see Harden doing this exact shit.
Both SGA and Harden are incredibly talented players who are/were gifted 10+ points a night by completely abolishing the concept of blowing the whistle on them for traveling so they could create space with every previously illegal move they could invent, and it they missed, they’d just get free throws.
It’s so infuriating watching some of the most talented athletes in history just mope around playing the game the league has designed for them, rather than playing what we knew of as basketball until recently.
My man were you not paying attention? People bitched about Harden pulling his shit CONSTANTLY
i hated it when prime harden did it and i still hate it now
it’s just lame. both elite scorers of the ball but this shit is just shameless
you can’t fault random fans for not liking SGA because of this, they just don’t like it!
Yes. He has great skill, let me see that instead of the clown show.
Straight up! I actually love a big portion of SGA’s game. He’s probably the silkiest guard when penetrating the paint in the NBA today. He’s very fluid and great at making plays happen. But then there’s this shit, which to be fair, is the style of basketball that the REFS and the league are promoting by calling these fouls.
we’ve been complaining about the WAY that refs regulate the game for years now, but nothing seems to ever change
As somebody who watches a lot of Big XII college basketball: this subreddit is going to HATE AJ Dybantsa. IDK why some players embrace stuff like this but it’s not ending anytime soon.
To this day, I refuse to place SGA in my top 3, just like I refused with Harden and Embiid. Flopping is part of the game now but these 3 have taken it to another level, one that I just never could get behind watching. Shame because outside of that their games are beautiful to watch.
Damn the okc fans came firing like soldiers in these comments 🤣🤣
SGA can do no wrong to them. Even when he’s caught flopping they just say stuff like “it’s not his fault it’s the rules fault”
Edit: Also thanks for the reddit cares message OKC fans
They’re somehow the whiniest fanbase in the NBA. My theory is because they get gaslit by their commentators into thinking everything their team does is perfectly legit. I’m sure being from Oklahoma has something to do with it as well
[removed]
i mean, statistically they ARE the least educated fans in the 50 united states😅
literally the same shit as sixers fans with embiid last couple of years lmao
I appreciate the early reminder to stay off r/nba entirely during the playoffs, this place got unbearably toxic last year
I literally just unsubscribe from this subreddit in the postseason and I encourage other fans to do the same.
FTA is their god
Never seen such an auraless flailing “MVP”
They have a discord or something, if you say something that gets on their radars you will get dozens of the same terrible takes as replies.
I had a guy literally comment a day later he couldn’t respond to me because his comments were getting marked as a brigade.
They love to play victim despite having the mvp and championship. Weird behavior.
Nah, they don’t need to coordinate. Their replies are so similar simply because they’re dead last in education and, as such, their ability to express themselves is limited. Bunch of cavemen grunting, basically.
they out like if they say WHATABOUT enough then another achilles will pop and they can get another easy ring
This is why NBA sucks right now. Nobody likes this.
Fuckin right, even the Premier league has more physicality and less flopping than this
Am I crazy? I get that players pretend to be injured a bunch and roll on the floor but in terms of actual physicality it’s a lot more physical than the NBA and always has been. Players are constantly shoulder checking etc
It’s crazy when you have to remind nba and epl fans that both basketball and soccer are contact sports and just because two people met aggressively doesn’t mean there was a foul.
Soft AF and rewards cheating essentially.
This shit would get you laughed out my gym if you tried calling this a foul
Dead wrong. Okies love this shit
Okies love lead in their paint and living the length of NJ to the nearest hospital or school, let’s not put them on a pedestal
Yeah I’ve been way less enthused to watch full games for about 2 years now because of this bullshit tbh…
He’s not wrong.
Little sneaky extending of the elbow there by Dort too.
Also, check SGA’s hand/arm from the get-go…he’s hooking the defender’s left arm lol.
Yeah he pulls his arm into his “shooting motion”. So fucking cheap.
After he flopped literally the possession before. Tf is he on about LMFAO
Rule for thee but not for me
Jaylen Brown been annoying af this year
Don’t forget yelling “Ayyyy!” to get the foul as well.
already see the kids at the park doing this. it’s just part of their shooting routine now.
also maybe some other Wolves fans or Knicks fans can help me out on this one but I SWEAR Julius Randle did not used to do this until Ant started doing it. to be fair Randle’s sounds more like a tennis style grunt, like he’s doing it to conjure more strength to power his way to the basket. or maybe I just started noticing it after people started calling attention to Ant doing it but I less I’m dead wrong (which I admittedly might be) that’s a new thing for him.
either way, I still prefer an “ayyyyyyyy!” after/during a shot to flopping around like a moron when it comes to methods of calling attention to/“selling” contact.
He got raked across the wrists, what are you talking about
Thunder fans are flocking to the sub right now you’re not gonna get a good faith response here lol
Yes bro the oklahoma city market is outnumbering the boston market
Boston Market went bankrupt a while back. Kinda sad, half decent restaurant sometimes
every day was thanksgiving
Don’t care lol we here to talk ball. Let’s talk ball
It was not a flop, even the Thunder commentators acknowledged he got his arm hit
It was technically a foul just like how this shai clip is technically a foul. Both exaggerated contact
Both were fouls, both were flops to sell the foul.
Both were fouls, both sold the foul, only one of that contacts was initiated by the offensive player for the purpose because of a rule that does not make basketball better. The rule is stupid, not SGA’s exploiting it to extreme.
Yes, but the sell job was the funny part.
Its an obvious rip thru foul but he also did a great acting job lol
He’s 100% right tho 😂
i love how even with some hardware the okc fans are the softest bunch of commenters in the league. sga is a flopping machine. deal with it. make your peace. stop playing “whatabout” and come to terms with your player acting like a crybaby tattletale. unethical ball is its own punishment
sga is a flopping machine.
So is Chet. He flies under the radar because of SGA but he’s like 7’18” and a strong glare from a PG will send him flying into the upper deck.
Yeah, I think it’s because Chet’s head is like half the mass and size of his whole body. Doesn’t take much to throw him off balance.
There was one foul tonight where Chet got grabbed on the shoulder by like, Jordan Walsh or someone in the paint, and he flung his head back like he had been raked across the eyes.
It was a legit foul but the sell job was comically implausible because of his height. He looked so silly.
OKC is basically Arsenal with silverware. Unethical FTA Basketball and Unethical Set pieces Football
For real
I truly believe it’s because Oklahoma doesn’t have any other professional sports teams and the fans treat it with the same tribalism and insane bias as college sports. (Not to say there isn’t that stuff in professional sports, but college is another level)
It’s one of those things that they could just admit their bias, say they don’t care about the flopping because of their bias, and they would come off way better than all the whataboutism and over the top defense of this shit.
Ironic considering the warriors made a dynasty based off illegal screens
at least it’s entertaining to watch
I mean for real. Illegal screen to set off insane 40ft threes was Amazing to watch. This makes the NBA look weak and it’s no wonder US teams are starting to struggle internally. FIBA rules are way better
Right, somebody still has to make a 40 footer and play isn’t stopping to watch free throws
Unironically yeah. An illegal screen results in something cool. Flopping results in something lame. If SGA was driving his shoulder to make room so he could go up for a tomahawk dunk (aka the young LeBron special) people wouldn’t complain as much because of the rule of cool.
I’d rather them do the not calling fouls bad than calling fouls bad
As a Warriors fan, would gladly trade illegal screen calls for Curry no longer being grabbed and hugged off ball with no call (properly called fouls).
Curry and Klay would end up even better.
Stop playing “whatabout”
Plays “whatabout”
Offensive players are so protected that you barely see any plays run anymore. It’s much easier to give the ball to your star and let him work since he has a ton more Lee way then his defender
Superstar whistle + this rule is just too OP. And the contact isn’t usually that bad so you can still get off a pretty good, controlled shot most of the time. I hate when Luka does this, it’s just such a weak move that you pull when your defender is beating you to the spot.
Unless your name is Wardell Stephen Curry 🫠
SGA runs into the defender … Foul
Garbage basketball
The saddest part is his next play after one of these is usually a smooth step back J. He has the skill. Luka/Harden/Shai they all show how crazy skilled they are but it’s almost like those sick skills are their back up options. They seem to want a free throw first… then if it fails pull off a crazy shot. All the stars get caught flopping. But the ones I love to watch seem to only do it as a last resort.
I have been telling Thunder Floppers this every single day. SGA sees defender… he RUNS into them… falls down. 4 free throws. Rinse and repeat.
If this is a common foul, Zion should get 20 ft attempts per game. This is ridiculous
Yup.
For some weird reason this rule doesnt exist except for pre-injury Embiid, Shai and Luka. It’s like they are the personal sponsors of the NBA or some shit.
Rest of the league just gotta eat shit while those three are on the free throw line all game long. Putting whole teams in foul trouble.
Ehhh, there’s a ton of guys who do this and get calls. Derozan, Jimmy, Reaves, Brunson, Dame, Harden, Franz, JJJ, Trae, Deni, and plenty others who are guilty of it just less frequent offenders. Not to mention guys like Harrison Barnes, Dinwiddie, Mathurin, Coby White.. the NBA just needs some league-wide officiating changes because watching guys get free throws like this is abhorrent and ruins the product
Tbh I’m sure the league knows this and just doesn’t care, more stoppages means more ad time for them.
Curry too
Curry should be getting 30 lmao
you have to defend this guy with your arms behind your back
Go watch Christian Braun guarding him in the playoffs last year
By the end of the series, he was basically guarding him with his elbows locked, arms spread as wide as possible. You could hear him saying in his head, “don’t reach, don’t reach, they will call anything, don’t reach”
Would love for a team one game to do this and see if they still get called
Spurs did it years ago, I forget who it was against. Maybe Harden?
Brown has been on one since he became a streamer
Honestly for the better of the league lol he’s not shy to say what’s on his mind
It’s actually a cheat code. He can get fined for talking about the refs but will make more money from the publicity that brings his stream and brand
College basketball is such a better product because they acknowledge offensive fouls exist
Bingo. From the perspective of basketball purity, college ball is way more fun to watch. You actually have to work it around with passing and designed offense. Scoring is not as simple as giving it to your best player and letting them play iso ball at the perimeter - a little bit different in the post game but that is another reason why it’s more fun to watch - iso post play is classic basketball.
Defense is also way more interesting to watch - no defensive 3 in the key/2-3 Zones being common, forces offenses to be dynamic. You need shooters, post scorers, and finishers to succeed - you cannot just rely on one aspect of the game. Good defenders shine whereas in the NBA they can be avoided through mismatch hunting.
The fact of the matter is the NBA doesn’t give a shit about the sanctity of basketball. They want dunks, long three pointers, and highlights in general. There’s a reason why watching offenses designed by the likes of Pop and Phil were fun to watch - they actually accomplished how basketball is supposed to be played. Not this bullshit iso ball, foul baiting, free throw economy, 4 step, illegal screen pick and roll bullshit that gets tiring instantly.
The league is will continue to lose popularity if they don’t change the rules - Jaylen is right, this shit ain’t basketball.
It’s been Silvers goal this whole time. Like he said the NBA has become a highlight league. I swear 75% of fans don’t even watch full games anymore, if you were to ask fans of the NFL, MLB, NHL, soccer, etc. they would find it ridiculous that you aren’t watching full games. I used to watch almost every nationally broadcasted NBA game, now I only tune in for Lakers games because if they aren’t playing the game just isn’t fun to watch as a neutral anymore.
Thunder fans about to have a very reasonable and nuanced response to this lol
Rule needs to change.
You got a “top commenter” fighting back. Keep up the good work.
they’ve got exactly one professional sports team and so they get insanely defensive about them
I seriously dont get why silver thinks fans want to watch free throws and stars getting ejected on a whim
Besides draymond who we get to watch scream in a refs face after every play
Love JB but he literally shot fts off a weak foul right before
Just because Wallace reacted like it wasn’t a foul doesn’t mean it wasn’t one. He very clearly smacked him across the wrist. He was nowhere near the ball.
It’s a whatever, but not a great example to use in a whatabout scenario
I’m not saying JB didn’t get fouled, I think it was similarly a weak call imo.
But I think the distinction between wrist contact while shooting and whatever the fuck this is, is important, don’t you…?
Slapping someones wrists is a very clear cut foul even if it’s weak.
You can not co.pare that to SGA jumping into defenders lmao
He’s not wrong
He’s right
I love the Celtics now
The NBA is so hard to watch now. I find myself doing it less and less.
Says the mfer who pushes off as well all the damn time
As Lu Dort just clearly holds and moves on the Scheierman pick lol
Jaylen Brown is right. No one wants to watch this dogshit from FTA
This shit is why I haven’t watched basketball in the past 10 years
Why are you here
Worst call in basketball and a huge reason the product is declining. Fix this fucking nonsense already.
That’s not basketball!
SGA casually raising the defenders arm into a shooting motion is disgusting
NBA regular season is a complete joke
JB is a dipshit, but he’s right, SGA - to me, is unwatchable.
Thunder fans in here all in there feelings
He’s not wrong, but I wish people would direct their frustration toward those in charge of how the league is officiated and not individual players.
The whole “your player is unethical and mine isn’t” narrative isn’t productive, and that’s what a lot of these threads have become.
It sucks too cuz Shai is such a pure player. He doesn’t need all the bullshit and theatrics. Refs have enabled him as well, can’t blame a guy for taking advantage of a system that’s flawed.
But one thing is for certain, it’s boring as shit to watch, and ENDLESSLY frustrating when it’s against your team.
i see the refs pulled pout the OKC rule book tonight
Totally agree.
I can’t stand Shae, but that’s…. that’s a foul. Don’t put your arm on someone’s waist from the front when their arm is below yours. That’s just asking for a foul.
Well he’s right. That’s garbage
Adam Silver’s NBA🫴🏿
Why does nobody know what a hot mic actually is?
