[Highlight] The referee Sha’Rae Mitchell goes down after she hit her head and shoulder on a camera operator, who was in her path, on the court (with a replay)
Why’s the Camera man that far on the court
Ironically dude was recording Jalen Johnson dad in the front row
Atlanta has never been a serious NBA city, I’m sorry
Bring in the strippers!
This is by far worst than having cameramen the baseline. This guy’s boss who told him to stand basically on the sideline/on the court while live play is going on where refs constantly run is so moronic.
filming Jalen Johnsons dad lmao
Exactly, especially during live play
Getting footage of someone no one wants to see
Where’s Dennis Rodman when you need him?
if that was Bron, that camera man just lost his job
I’ve sat courtside quite a few times and it always amazes me how the NBA lets so many people be that close to the court. Fans, arena employees and all the cameramen and reporters. The shit under the hoop always bugs me. The league put those stupid squares of tape but those areas should be fully clear. You’d have thought they’d change things after Rodman kicked that guy in the nuts or when Lebron cut his head on a camera in the playoffs one year.
And in this scenario there’s ZERO fucking reasons why that guy should be where he was, zooming in on one guy sitting courtside.
Its honestly fucking nuts, and a reason by the bubble was one of the coolest things to ever happen for people who actually love watching the game.
Push everything back just 8ft i mean gd
even just another 3 feet would be good. Thats enough for a cameraman that knows what they’re doing to operate in.
Any attempt to move seats back would be fought tooth and nail bc it might end up in less overall seats which means less revenue. They’ll just keep shrugging these incidents off as unfortunate and then move on
The greed of owners and players makes so many things about the NBA worse. Think how much more enjoyable the game would be if the players had a few feet more space, there were fewer commercials, the season was 10 games shorter, and gambling wasn’t forced into every aspect.
The lost revenue would be relatively insignificant for people making millions and billions.
Agreed. But at the moment, they’re really not starved for fans so from the perspective of the billionaire class, making the profit line go ever upwards is still priority number one
Define relatively insignificant. I agree with everything you’re saying, except that part.
just part of his natural camera motion tbh
Yeah, I know. Just saying… 3 feet isn’t much and would solve the problem pretty well. They should just add hot air ballon seats
But then that would mean the loss of a row of ungodly overpriced seats for brain dead celebrities and influencers
Yeah having an extra row of seats on all sides makes so much sense
The issue is that’s like 100+ tickets that are worth 1k-10k per ticket depending on the stadium… that means in order to make the league “safer for players” the owners would have to give up like 1-100 million in ticket sales which the the owners and league wouldn’t go for
Until a prime star player gets hurt and speaks about it? Nothing is gonna happen
You are only removing the revenue of the number of front row seats x value of last seat in seating bowl.
The first row will always be the first row. You might now get a few more front row seats.
The first row 2 feet closer is still worth more
It’d end up the same once it became the new first row. Prices don’t go down.
It should be like euroleague and the Olympics where you have wide and clearly defined sideline space blocked off by add boards. Compare that to MSG, which is really the worst offender in the whole league. Like 3 fucking inches of sideline space. Players are going to be tripping on some escort’s heels like are we for real? Do we give a shit about the game at all? Oh, and when there is a national tv broadcast, they just plop some monitors on a bake sale table? Are you fucking serious? NBA can’t find a legit padded add board desk to put their premier broadcasters behind like all the local broadcasters have? Oh not to mention serving a tray of beer RIGHT ON THE FUCKING COURT. Really pathetic. It’s my biggest gripe about the league.
I don’t think they would lose that much revenue. The highest ticket prices would just move back a row. You’d lose essentially the cheapest non-hockey seats (the ones in front of where the boards go). Not nothin but completely worth not having a comical set up.
Its so fucking dumb man idk, the idea that its something special about nba basketball that you can be an inch away from their ass when their inbounding is all i can think, like they believe its nba lore worth protecting.
Because seriously, theyd lose basically no money and radically improve the ingame product. Its the most no brainer improvement imaginable
then what do you do missing out on the extra 20 courtside seats, who will think of the shareholders uWu
Despite the elevated courts, all the extra room on the apron is the best part about the Final Four, so much room to keep running or dive for a loose ball. The bubble reminded me a lot of that and it’d be cool to have in the NBA permanently.
The bubble can suck my nuts. Boring and did not replicate real conditions l.
Bubble chip forever an asterisk.
It’s always bothered me because players could legit make saves on balls heading out of play if there was room to dive for them. It doesn’t make sense for there to be so many people that close
It does make sense if all you care about is money
Joe Johnson was on Shannon Sharpe and Ocho show. Joe mentioned it would cost 30k for courtside seats at Boston.
NBA basketball is about the only sport where there are a hundred odd people surrounding the playing area that can literally reach out and interrupt play if they are so inclined. Olympic and Euro basketball have more security barriers/distance, and other sports have no spectators in “reach over proximity”.
Yes!! Thank you!! In any other work environment, this would be an OSHA violation. So why isn’t it here?! There should be soft walls that the players can run into if needed, not people!
I’m am absolutely surprised there has not been 1 incident where the waiters, ushers and fans are walking alongside the courtside row while game is in play.
Basketball in general does not give enough space out of bounds for players. You should be able to dive for a ball going out of bounds without the fear of being impaled by a folding chair.
The NBAPA and the officials union should make it a workplace health and safety issue.
She has every right to be mad. Shitty positioning from the camera guy
Work Comp Claim! Work Comp Claim!
It’s refreshing seeing most people in here agreeing with this. On Insta, the comments are just shitting on her. Saying she was trying to be the center of attention and she had no right to be angry at the cameraman. Maybe my algorithm is just trying to ragebait me on there.
Instagram? More like Incelgram.
Instagram has a very loud contingent of straight dudes who have never made a woman happy, so they think it’s women’s fault.
Instagram is a cesspool of dudes raging on women for anything and everything. A female ref in a men’s sports league? Holy shit these guys lose their minds if they even see one in a highlight that has nothing to do with her.
Right? Like being female makes one incapable of simply knowing the rules of basketball? Instagram’s echo chamber of those guys is beyond stupid.
you gotta admit it is funny to make a flopping joke about a ref
anyway that sucks, hope she’s okay
When I hit my head on something I instantly become enraged. She was probably feeling similar.
You know how much hitting your head on anything feels. I can’t imagine taking a camera off the noggin… or in this case a noggin off the camera. That would absolutely suck.
Yea that type of hit to the skull can be life changing. She may not know the full impact until months down the road.
Seriously y’all wear helmets and shit like that. Only takes one time.
Wear helmets on a basketball court?
Also this is probably not a fuckin TBI lol at absolute worst it’s a concussion but I don’t even think it’s that
I’m 95% sure that’s a bot. I’ve seen this exact comment from many many motorcycle videos
I’m dying at “wear a helmet” lmao
[removed]
You might be a human, but are you really suggesting NBA referees use a fucking helmet? How about players, should they wear helmets too?
How about NO ONE FUCKING STEPS ON THE COURT WHERE PLAYERS AND REFS ARE WORKING?
Holy crap dude
Just because your skull is soft doesn’t mean people should wear a helmet on the court.
What? That’s not what I meant at all lmao. I meant when you’re on a motorcycle. Working construction. Situations that recommend helmets. All it takes is one hit. I didn’t mean NBA players and refs should wear helmets.
Bro watched the South Park ep Sarcastaball and thought it was a real thing
Helmets on a basketball court is dumb as hell but concussions are TBIs lol
I knew someone was gonna say this. Technically, yes, they represent the mildest form of TBI but pretty much no one says “I had a TBI” referring to sustaining a mild concussion
Generally TBIs refer to more permanently life altering massive traumas
“I knew somebody was going to correct my mistake”
Yes, but I didn’t wanna type more. But look how that worked out
Less than ideal spot for a camera man to be standing during live play wtf
Yeah, don’t they usually get these shots during a timeout or just zooming in from a distance? I’ve never seen a cameraman walking down the sideline like that during live play
Cameraman is an idiot. No reason to be out on the floor like that
Cameraman follows orders from the producer. They had to have 2 seconds of video of jalen johnson’s dad.
camera guys have gone rogue before and gone to places they shouldnt have to get the shot they want. We dont have to take all agency away from this guy.
ok…but if there’s some significant probability that he was following the instructions of the producer maybe hold off on saying “cameraman is an idiot” until we know?
Amazing that the camera man has zero responsibility or autonomy in this. Does he have no ability to say, “No, I’ll go when the game isn’t live”? I highly doubt it’s the camera mans first day on the job.
No. Either way the camera man is an idiot. The producer might also be an idiot but it doesnt matter in terms of the camera guy. If your boss tells you to break the law, and you do it, you both get in trouble.
First of all, camera guys take orders from directors, if the director asked him to do this he should have told him hell no it’s not safe. Never turn your back to play when you’re that close to the court. Director is an idiot if he told him to do this and camera guy is an idiot for doing it without questioning.
That dipshit was eyeing the action on the floor, waited to confirm that the shot went in, then stepped BEHIND her walked 10 feet up the court to film Johnson’s dad.
Has he never been to a basketball game before?
But how’s he suppose to get those Spike Lee angles
I think sure you can blame the cameraman for this but the bigger fault lies in the NBA allowing these people to carry heavy equipment so close to athletes and refs running around during a game. Its a recipe for bullshit like this to happen, and this time at least no one got seriously injured or something.
That camera man is what’s wrong with Costco on a Sunday.
People lacking spatial awareness.
Holy hell, you’re speaking my language. I’ve been bitching about that shit for years. Just people clogging up the entire center of aisles… not giving a flying fuck about being a hindrance to everyone around them. It’s their world and we’re all just living in it. Plenty of room to get on one side of the aisle or the other to let people pass (especially at Costco), but nah- gotta take up the entire center.
Side rant about a similar situation years ago. My wife and I are in our car leaving a restaurant we just finished eating at. We’re making our way through the parking lot and there’s a woman and a gaggle of kids slowly meandering directly in front of us. Plenty of room on either side of where car traffic should be flowing, but they are directly in the center just slowly walking toward the restaurant. My wife knows I’m about to lose my shit and gives me a soft “honey…” to stop me from just laying on the horn.
Look, I’m not saying Thanos was *right*… but I get it.
Whatever producer told that cameraman to go get that shot should be relegated to division 6 HS games
As requested by u/Brooklyn917
Thank You!
Before they showed the replay they were guessing she got hit in the head with something and I thought some fans were throwing stuff but this was much worse. How reckless of the cameraman, he was focus on getting a shot of Jalen Johnson’s Dad celebrating, he was unaware of his surroundings.
Thankfully she was fine and able to finish the game.
I get her frustration, but cameramans feet were set. That’s going to be called a charge every time.
(I’m glad she’s okay)
Why was the camera man just standing there in the way on the court ffs
And he moves onto the court before everyone has run down to the other end instead of waiting for them to pass. Thinks his shot is more important than the game itself.
Wow gabe is getting playing time, cool
Cardio Gabe
Wtf is the camera man filming nonsense way out in the court, on a live play….
Hawks media member almost beheading a NBA Ref?? Right after Silver shut down their Magic City bs? This is suspicious.. 😳😂
I’d love for someone to give me a valid reason a fucking cameraman in on the court during live play, but there isn’t one. Fucking dumbass needs to stay off the court or be removed the same way a fan would.
He was posted up like he was recording a music video for worldstar, why tf do we need to see what jalen johnsons dad is doing from TWO feet away??
I don’t care, if I’m the head ref I’m ejecting that camera person from the game.
Camera person just lost a job and credential.
He just saved a bunch of money by switching to geico too
Man I hope shes ok, that look like it hurt
that screen was all i needed to see, convert his camera salary to a standard nba contract
ouch man hitting that aluminum frame camera rig on his back looks painful to faceplant into
between the guy and the rig its a lot to run into face first and it looks like she hit the metal and plastic backpack thing, basically her head ran into a car battery as far as how it would feel
looks like one of the connectors is out on it, i wonder if she did that.
plot twist he wasn’t recording when he thought he was for the rest of the game?
Really not that heavy but it is obviously hard. The stabilizer he’s holding which the camera is mounted too has a weight limit that isn’t very high so things usually get stripped down to just camera and lens and often times people mount everything else to a backpack like that just to make it easy instead of figuring out what needs to be removed via trial and error. Definitely wouldn’t weigh as much as a car battery though
Your right, I didn’t phrase it well, its not about weight more about it being hard unforgiving material. If she just hit him it would have been nothing he has padding. I edited the post to be clearer.
Yeah didn’t see the back portion of the mount and was confused at the reaction at first. That running full speed head first into anything metal can’t be fun at all.
Damn hope ok. Get off court camera dude
I’ve seen enough. Two free throw for SGA
Can refs eject camera operators?
Yes they can
bro i’m high and for several seconds i thought gabe vincent was trae young
Wait, he’s not?
Oh fuck nah that’s wild
Hope she’s okay
The row immediately behind courtside is plenty close. It only benefits the game to restrict fans to that row and back. Get rid of courtside seats
Concussion protocol?
2 Free Throws for Shai
That’s a clean lane violation
Yeah that’s really bad on the camera guy. Yikes.
Camera man gave the ref more than enough time to move around that screen. Good no call. 2 FTs for Shai still.
This and the camera people under the baskets that always creep out of their outlined area. Seen many players take a camera in the side or arm. Back them up.
She’s overreacting lmao shrug it off
Cough. The nba lets this shit happen
She wanted to T up that canerman so bad
Flagrant 2.
No tech??
all foul calls for the rest of the game under protest for being made by someone recently concussed
https://i.redd.it/2cmq0dh2w5wa1.jpg
Two free throws.
the way she falls tells me she used to play
Camera guy is a dick
Adam Silver please monitor the sidelines the same way you monitor fans in the crowd,THIS SHOULDNT HAPPEN
I hope she’s ok those hits to the head can be real deceiving.
Why do they not have a single ice pack available…?
Blocking Foul - Camera Operator.
she fine asl
Somewhere Shai Adebayo got two foul shots.
Two shots for Harden
I’ve always thought the court side sideline seats were way too close ever since Drake messed up what could have been a great photo of Bron and Kobe in his last All-Star game.
r/killthecameraman
not related to her injury as such, but the freeze frame of her falling while the nets player runs past is wild. she’s a normal sized human but she is so small next to them. don’t often get that perspective on the court itself
Amazing how unprofessional NBA became in less than a decade.
Why are the refs sponsored by a middle east airliner?
This is real!
Gabe Vincent and Trae Young have similar faces. Anyone agree?
I think she flopped
Is she crying??? That’s crazy!
She kinda fine
why’d she get mad tho like that? 😂
Cause his dumbass shouldn’t be in the baseline during transition and active play? Cause her heads prolly stinging like a bitch because she ran headfirst into a metal frame?
She gotta toughen up! Yeah you got hurt but it’s not all about you, keep it moving!!
Ref’s flopping now?
Maybe the camera man shouldn’t be standing there and should be ready to get out of a referee’s way on the court like wtf?
This is the first argument I’ve seen for refs to look away from the players.
Yeah let’s have the ref not watching the play that’s a really good idea
You’re a dumbass
Negative IQ take, cameraman shouldn’t be there during a live play
The cameraman is filming the 3 second videos you post on social media. Player and refs know where the cameras are, she can avoid it.
As a camera operator, once the ball is inbound, YOU ARE NOT STANDING OR OUT ON THE COURT that’s definitely not a broadcast tv camera it looks more like a social media camera but dayum theres gonna be a very harsh email to all upper staff members
