NBA should really ditch that rule. I didn’t like it when it was implemented precisely because of this specific scenario. You might have one player that’s clearly above the field and yet, might not qualify by 1-2 games. Just feels completely arbitrary AND it can make players feel forced to play despite not being 100% due to contract incentives.

60 games of Wemby is better defensive impact than 65 games of any other player in the league. The voters used to already account for minutes and games played, and this rule just took that judgement out of their hands.
They can still have that information affect their judgement; if its close between 2 players and one played in 7 more games, maybe that sways them. Just because theres a hard cutoff at some point doesn’t mean it doesnt factor in at all

Frankly, 60 games of Wemby is better defensive impact than 90 games of anyone else in the league right now. He should be an automatic lock for DPOY any year he plays 50+ games. Any rule that locks him out of awards altogether is a bad rule.
Wemby is leading in blocks, defensive rating and defensive win shares by a comfortable margin. Scottie Barnes or Chet isn’t more valuable than him simply because they play a few more games. This is a hill that I will die on.
