well i think part of the reason this game rubbed people the wrong way is because, for multiple reasons, to a lot of people it is representative of many of the things they don’t like about the current NBA product

• organizations blatantly trying to lose instead of actually competing
• the complete lack of defense in today’s game
• record amounts of free throws instead of regular basketball in the natural flow of the game
• players chucking up ridiculous amounts of threes even when they’re not going in
• players gaming their stats and blatantly caring more about chasing numbers than about competing
• fans/media not actually watching the games and only caring about the box score stats on paper
• overall stat inflation in the current era cheapening the achievements of past eras

Good for Spo and good for Bam. I mean, I’m a Lakers fan and loved watching Kobe. And Bam’s 83 was a tiny bit gimmicky, but the scoreboard is the scoreboard.

Even when you’ve stopped playing normal basketball (as they did), that’s still a lot of fucking points.

Plus…it’s Bam. Dude plays hard. Plays defense. Is very underrated offensively. Is just a consummate professional. Seems like a great guy who supports his girlfriend.

And…Kobe would have liked Bam and would have wanted to be his teammate.

Not to mention, the fakest big scoring game I ever saw was David Robinson getting 70 in the final game of the season to clinch the scoring title over Shaq. And the admiral was a really good offensive player and a pretty good guy. But he played a BS game (and Shaq always held a grudge over it too), but he still only got 70!!! Not 83.

And still, the most impressive scoring game I ever watched was MJ scoring 63 on the Celtics in a loss. Watched that whole game live on a 19” TV. 20 less than Bam. 18 less than Kobe. Less than a bunch of 70 pointers. Still the best game imho.

This is going to be a weird comparison for a lot of people, but in cricket the top score by one player (in Tests) is 400 by Brian Lara - a legend of the game. Last year, a relatively little known South African batter was approaching that score against a pretty bad Zimbabwe team and decided to declare instead of taking the record.
