in the years leading up to the season it was enacted, it seemed like every fastbreak was just getting cut short by a quick intentional foul, ruining exciting opportunities in a fastbreak offense. the league’s response to this, adding the transition take foul where the fouled team retains possession was really effective in removing these fouls imo. i rarely see them happen now, i see a lot more fastbreaks and less boring fouls

In close games the winning team will frequently foul to limit the trailing team to 2 points instead of 3 pt attempts. The trailing team is forced to foul in order to stop the clock.

If this rule was enacted the trailing team wouldn’t want to be fouled and could decline the free throws for a 3. And the winning team could try to run clock.

It would have more impact than you think

I disagree with this. It can get super egregious but when a team is down 2 with 10 seconds left in the playoffs, sending someone to the line under that pressure is about as dramatic as it can get. Especially if you can get the foul on a Giannis or someone similar who’s a great player but only an okay FT shooter.

It would be very boring if teams could just hold the ball in that situation and end the game.

Maybe if you intentionally foul like, 3 times in a row, its a technical. That I could see enhancing the game.

Look I will say, this IMO is not related to the intentional fouling when down. Even if it is.

This is a team trying to prevent a 3pt attempt, not just a make but an attempt. This can be taken away if the NBA wanted to. Taking away the ability to foul when down with no shotclock, is not something they’ll take away though.

Personally I think fouling up 3 is stupid, because then you HAVE TO make 2 FTs and if you happen to miss, then they get the ball down 1 or 2. So now instead of them only being able to tie the game, they can win it. This strategy lost the Thunder game 1 of the Finals.

I’ve always hated it. Just let them shoot, the chances of making a last second 3 are tiny and if it happens, it’s just OT. I’d rather a chance to win, than no chance at all myself. It’s a controversial take I know.
