That’s the thing that’s so funny about people talking about this being so unethical. Teams have been tanking for years and this has never happened before, it’s still insane to score 83 despite all the free throws and playing intentionally to get Bam over the 81 points. If it all it took was playing against a tanking team, this would happen all the time.

Also it was a bit of the stars aligning with Herro, Powell, Wiggins, and Ware all being out. If any of those guys were playing, this doesn’t happen. And with Ware being out and Wizards being such a big team, the Heat can only play a lineup where their biggest guys on the court are Fontecchio and Keshad Johnson so much. Bam needed to be on the court a lot. Obviously not by the end of the game, but by that point the record was too close not to go for. What coach (maybe other than Kerr) is not going to help their star player who’s been with the team his entire 9 year career go for that when it’s so close?

You don’t understand why people who follow the NBA might take somebody getting 84 points in a game seriously? We all know it’s a game. Obviously it doesn’t really affect our individual lives. But in the context of the NBA (the league we’re all watching and care about) it does matter, lol.
Where does this Wilt didn’t score 100 bullshit coming from? What, does nothing exist if video proof in 1080p isn’t available? That kind of thinking drives me nuts.
I’d like to have fun with it! I wish I was enjoying this moment at the same level as everyone else. I think the core of my issue with how it was done is that they were fouling to extend time so he could get shots up. I’ve never seen that done in an NBA game before. It taints it for me a bit! And what I’m hearing in response is basically an explanation for how funny it is, which to me just seems pretty cynical. I’m not hating on Bam or the Heat, I just didn’t like how it came about.

It was truly the perfect storm. So many things had to happen for Bam to score 50 let alone 83. The largest component was their opponent were the Wizards. But the Heat also needed to be missing their 2nd and 3rd options. Bam also had to put on a career offensive performance from every angle. Spo and Riley had to allow it to happen.

I’m glad most of this is blaming the Wizards for not caring to stop Bam until the end rather than blaming Bam and Spo for keeping it going.

I’ll admit, I wish the Wizards kept the red carpet laid out for Bam and didn’t rack up a bunch of FTs. But it was funny that the Wizards tried rolling it up only when they realized they played too well for Bam to be taken out (lead below 20 in the early 4th) and he was at 65. Only at that point did they start doubling Bam on the catch, hugging him off ball like he was Steph, and then doubling off ball and shadow tripling into full tripling towards the end.

Keefe and the Wizards are probably well aware of how bad their defense was, I think the “In the fourth quarter it turned into not a real basketball game.” was referring to the Heat intentionally fouling while up 20 plus points to chase the record.

When Kobe scored 81, the Lakers needed every last point that Kobe scored because the game was fairly close, and when the game was decided, they took Kobe out.

Some will point out that Kobe’s most impressive game wasn’t the 81, but when he scored 62 in 3 quarters against Dallas, and sat the entire 4th because it was already a blowout.

People wonder how many Kobe could have scored that night if they let him play the 4th, let alone if they did what the Heat did and intentionally fouled to get more possessions.

Look at that Lakers roster that night and how they were playing, a double digit lead wouldn’t have been safe with 5 minutes left. The Raptors had 5 players in double figures, including Mike James who was torching the Lakers, besides Kobe, the Lakers leading scorers were Smush Parker with 13 and Chris Mihm with 12. The Lakers were down 63-49 at Halftime, Lakers ended the 3rd up 91-85, the game had not been decided, the Lakers needed those Kobe points to close the game.

The Heat were up 76-62 at Halftime, then 113-97 at the end of the 3rd, they were seemingly in control the whole game.

You want to leave Bam in to chase more points? Cool, not the worst thing in my eyes, just hope someone doesn’t get hurt playing minutes in a game already decided. What if someone on the Wizards tried to pull a Lu Dort and hip check Bam? The headline would read different…

The game was more than decided before they took Kobe out, it’s fine to admit that since all historic scoring games happen like that. The justification for fouling is not a mystery, they wanted him to get the record, it’s only happened 3 times in history where a player has scored 80 and above, I don’t think anyone is saying otherwise. Yes, he could have gotten hurt but he didn’t. Kobe stayed far longer than he should have for a meaningless game when he scored 60 for the last time and it was amazing too! We had 3 out of our top 4 scorers out as well. Nitpicking an historic game when Kobe probably would have congratulated Bam is just kinda weird to me.

A lot of the comments are just killing him because of the lack of defense or adjustments he made, and those criticisms are valid.

But his comments are ALSO VALID, it’s not out of the ordinary for players and teams to chase career highs or records, I already stated I didn’t have an issue with that.

I agree with him that intentionally fouling while WINNING in a BLOWOUT feels like “not a real basketball game”.

I’m not the only one that feels this way, and it really has nothing to do with Bam, this could have been any All Star in the NBA, this could have been a D2 college kid, or some random High School player in Montana, it feels off.

If you feel differently then I’ll just have to respectfully disagree with you.

I was watching that 81 point game live and i’ll tell you even when Kobe was approaching some of the record numbers the game still didn’t feel decided, the Lakers were mediocre at best that year, at Halftime it looked like another blowout loss, in the 3rd the Lakers made a huge run but Lakers fans still worried “are they gonna run out of gas in the 4th after digging themselves out of that big hole?” By the end it felt like “cool it looks like the Lakers are actually gonna win this, and holy crap what a game by Kobe!” That’s when the record started to feel good, after it felt like the win was secured.

I get that you also had a bunch of players out but consider this, most people would take Davion Mitchell and Simone Fontecchio over Smush Parker and Chris Mihm 100 times out of 100. The difference is those two were Lakers STARTERS that season, imagine what the Lakers bench had if Davion and Simone were better than the Lakers starters and they are only rotation players for you. That was a historically bad supporting cast for Kobe, and while you keep saying that Kobe stayed in the game too long, I promise you very few leads were safe when Kobe was doing everything for the team that year.

Regarding Kobe’s last game, yes the game was meaningless in the sense that the Lakers weren’t going to the playoffs, but it was still a Regular Season game, not to mention the last one of his career.

I don’t understand when you say that Kobe “stayed far too long” in that game, because again the Lakers were down 57-42 at Halftime and still down 75-66 after the 3rd, AGAIN his 60 was needed because they only won by 5 points.

So it basically supports the same point of keeping a player in to score a bunch of points because you need them to win the game versus keep a player in to score a bunch of points even when you are already winning by a lot, and then on top of that intentionally fouling to get more possessions.

Congrats to Bam, nothing against him, it’s just the circumstances around it feel weird.
