Wemby has almost no chance of being Lebron. Wemby can definitely be an all time great but you underrate Lebron’s insane durability. Wemby has already missed more games than Lebron did in his first 11 years.

Its possible we have players reach higher peaks than Lebron but its going to be a long time before we get another player with his combination of durability and skill.

I’m talking about top 10 draft picks often failing to turn into premium players. That is a scouting issue.

It’s not like Zaccharie Risacher is super talented and just can’t find a spot to play. He has a spot, he’s just not doing well. Same thing with Markelle Fultz, Ben Simmons, Anthony Bennet, etc. And then you had plenty of top picks who were just solid players: Ayton, Wiggins, Wall, Griffin, Bogut. None of them struggled for playing time because of older players sticking around. They just never became great.

Look at the 2019 top 10: Zion, Ja, RJ, Hunter, Garland, Culver, Coby White, Jaxson Hayes, Rui, Reddish.

2019 top 10 picks by VORP: 1, 2, 13, 31, 11, 38, 5, 21, 20, 18

2020 top 10 picks by VORP: 12, 1, 21, 30, 3, 25, 26, 6, 9, 8

So I randomly picked 2015.

There were 1,215 players taken overall in the MLB draft. Across 40 rounds. 948 signed. Of those 948…

There were 42 first round selections. 33 made it to the majors. Which is pretty crazy. 21 had positive WAR. 9 accumulated more than 10 WAR. 8 made the all-star team. And something like 10 have won golden gloves.

42 of 1215 is 3.45%. So in that top 3.45%, teams made some pretty strong selections. The 3rd round had 30 players, only 14 made the majors, and only 2 broke 10 WAR. In the 5th round, 13 made the majors, but none have broken 10 WAR. And it gets worse from there. Some rounds have 0 players making the majors.

From the first round, the top 10 WAR by pick were: 2, 1, 5, 41, 9, 7, 32, 15, 24, 26.

9 of the 42 never played a game in the majors.

The NBA drafts 60 players. That’s almost as much as the MLB’s first round.

Only 27 of the 60 had positive VORP. 16 of the 60 never played a single NBA game.

Only 3 of the top 10 picks made the top VORP. You have to go to 17th in VORP to find someone else from the top 10. Two second round players made the top 10. And there were 5 second round players in the top 20.

When you’re drafting 1,215 players, I get first round picks not working out. But MLB teams, at least in 2015, had a pretty strong eye for talent.

When you’re drafting 60 players, it’s wild for the top 10 to be such a crap shoot. And for second round players to exceed their draft position so often.

That was disrespectful to hockey. But coverage of it has dropped a lot. I feel like MLS is more popular these days.

Baseball has the largest draft. NFL the second largest. NBA has the smallest. I think that’s what makes the talent gap seem so crazy to me. Only 60 players are drafted each year. With how many people play, you would think that the skill level between the top 60 would be maybe a bit closer? Or that the true talents would be obvious? But it feels like most of the top 10 of every class just…are never very good. That it’s sometimes hard to even find a solid starter with a first round pick.

That shows how talented the starters actually are. But it still makes me think there’s some kind of developmental gap.

We should really save these draft comparisons for 5 years after minimum. People were saying 2017 was goated like three months into the season, but in retrospect it looks to be a regular draft

I’m not a Melo fan, but he’s a HOFer even if you ignore his NCAA title and 3 Olympic golds and only focus on his NBA career.

He’s a 10x All-Star and #13 all-time in scoring. Other than DeMar (shockingly #22), everyone in the top 50 is either already in the HOF or a lock.

Sure but Melo would’ve been a HOF lock even if he never played college ball.

But his freshmen title/Olympic golds made him a lock regardless of what he did in the league.

Lebron exceeding the impossibly high hype and not having any off court fuckups for over 20 years is just incredible. Only thing I really knock him for is his GM skills.
