Is this supposed to be some sort of gotcha? Paolo was 6’10 playing like Kobe and with Jalen Greens efficiency to start the year. Nobody would have been saying all of those things if he was playing like this all year. Are we supposed to never criticize players when they play badly just in case they start playing better? No, obviously not. As long as people adjust their evaluations when he has good stretches like this it’s fair. The issue with Paolo has never been his peak form though, it’s what he looks like from the start of the season until the end which has always been very inconsistent.

People seem really quiet now.

Paolo is one of the best scorers in the league easily, he is in a team with a lot of offensively talented players who unfortunately are just very injury prone and as such they are unable to establish a consistent identity in offense.

Fortunately, they are both very young and have a defensive identity.

Banchero can absolutely be an All NBA type player if he were in a team where he has to do more; he doesn’t.

People forget Orlando has 3 players averaging 20+ppg.

People are quiet because over the last 20 games he’s fixed his efficiency and shot diet, do you expect people to keep complaining when he actually plays well? The issue is that he’s never been able to maintain this level of play. That’s what people expect from all star/all NBA players. And we’ve actually seen Paolo on teams where he has to do more and he’s just as inefficient and just as inconsistent. And Franz has played less than half the season, it’s a little disingenuous to act like Paolo is just giving up usage whe one of those “20 ppg scorers” hardly plays. Also I love how you can claim that the magic have Paolo as one of the top scorers in the league, a bunch of good offensive players, and a defensive identity, and yet they’re still mid. And somehow he’s both playing with too many good offensive players to score more, but at the same time the magic are too injured to build a consistent offence. The reality is, the best scorers in the league will get theirs no matter who they play with. Luka is playing with AR and Lebron and he’s still getting his. Giannis and SGA aren’t playing with anyone great but they still get theirs. Jaylen Brown lost an all NBA forward to injury and they shipped out literally their entire center rotation and guess what? Jaylen Brown is still getting his. If Paolo were as great as you say he is it wouldn’t matter who he’s playing with. It’s always injuries, or too many good players, or the coach, or lack of shooting, etc. This guy gets every excuse in the book and when he plays really well for 10 games Magic fans are ready to triple down on him being a franchise guy.

They are mid because they haven’t been healthy.

You know who also are mid when not healthy? Most teams in the league.

When Franz is out, they still have another player scoring over 20+ppg, and they might be one of the teams with more players who score over 10ppg in the league.

Like I said, we can keep blaming health and “so many guys score lots on the magic” but the best players will still get theirs no matter who they play with. Like I said Luka has no problem averaging 30 next to Reaves and Bron and Jaylen Brown has been dominant despite losing basically his entire frontcourt. These are all just excuses but the consistent trend is that Paolo has NEVER been able to maintain this level of play for a meaningful length of time.

It’s not about some arbitrary “franchise guy” label. The point is everybody constantly kills this kid for some reason despite the fact that he’s still only 23 years old. You’re comparing him to Luka, Giannis, SGA, Jaylen Brown, etc.…like, these guys are all much further along in their development than Paolo. It’s so disingenuous. Are we going to act like these guys aren’t much better now, especially as pure shot makers, than in their age 23 seasons?

Like, maybe Paolo tops out as an under qualified #1, a guy who you can anchor a good, not great, team and a guy who you’ll never win a title with as your best and highest paid player. That’s within the range of outcomes and I don’t think any reasonable Magic fan would argue otherwise. But there’s also a world where he improves his shot making, decision making, gets to play in more sophisticated offensive system, etc. and he makes the leap to being a perennial All NBA guy. The talent is for sure there and it’s abundantly clear to anyone who watches him consistently and doesn’t just cherry pick advanced metrics.

Why can’t everyone chill the fuck out and wait to see what happens as opposed to writing a referendum on his career every other week?

Compare usage, take into account the percentage he is responsible for in account of the team’s total ppg, and consider his age and years in the league.

It’s obvious he is a scoring machine and has a scoring trajectory that’s more impressive than half that list. How many of those players you listed have 2 teammates that score 20+ by their side.

So, the Paolo hate really kicked off with the Draft Circle podcast folks. They were all about Chet, and then Paolo got picked instead. Same deal with Cade, who got picked over Mobley the analytics darling. And to top it off, the Paolo-Wagner rivalry for taking over the team just fueled the fire, kinda like with Brown and Tatum. Wagner was loved by advanced stats, the other was hated by them. The idea was that Paulo was in the way of Wagner being the number 1 option on the team had many puzzled. The truth is Paulo’s strength was always hiding behind lineups and coaching. People bring up his net rating (after long lectures why its a faulty stat) but it was always very good with players who fit with him. Not every star is a good fit with anyone.
