Not saying you are or would do this, but a lot of people simply seem to value x number of first round picks over y number of picks regardless of how protected those picks are / how likely they are to be in the lottery.
And this is before we even get into the fact that other players are also involved in trades. So there’s just so many different situations. For instance, while the Luka trade was bad it’s kind of misleading to say it only netted the Mavs one first round pick. i think the main reason why a lot of people, me included, were excited was because of the prospect of having four villanova players on the same team again. they did a half measure though and traded divincenzo. youre right that it was a risky overpay from the start but trading divincenzo makes it a lot worse in my opinion. not saying that it was guaranteed to work out but its like they made a risky move in pursuit of a goal that they completely abandoned afterwards.
That came with the KAT trade. They beat Boston in the playoffs, due in no small way to the play of the two wings. People can play the game with who could they have acquired since. Rose wasn’t sitting on the picks waiting for Milwaukee to move Giannis. The interesting piece will be if they get bounced early, do they try to move Towns in what would surely be for lesser value? This window isn’t too long while Brunson, Bridges, OG and KAT have deals that fit with them in their prime.

Players who are just “3&D” do not get 4 year 150 million dollar extensions. Lu Dort is a 3&D and I promise you his next contract won’t be for an average of 37 million per year. In fact, he makes about half of that at the moment. There is a certain level of consistency that is expected with the haul we traded for him and the contract Leon gave him.
With all due respect, Lu Dort is a horrible comparison. Dude averages 8.7 ppg to Mikal’s 15.5. He’s OKC’s 10th highest scorer per game (9th not counting McCain) compared to Mikal being our 4th. Around the trade deadline I was kinda thinking Trey Murphy might pull a bigger price than Giannis for this reason and the age difference. Neither was traded, so I don’t know if that was right or wrong. Teams definitely put a premium on long shooters though, like the pass rushers of the NBA.
