It’s crazy that my only thought when I saw him start to go for that objectively bad shot was “he makes those”. Not a doubt in my mind that was going in. These kinds of shots are more certain than open 3’s for him
I mean objectively of course he’d prefer open shots but he’s definitely got that skill to not be too bothered by good defence.
MJ, Kobe, KD, Dame all had that. Oddly, Jamal Crawford and JR Smith did too. LeBron’s got a few moves that he can do (his post-fade to the left), but it’s not quite the same.
I think some players are just better when they shoot off of pure muscle memory. When they’re open it’s like they think about it a little bit and sometimes it throws them off
Some fun numbers about this: Most elite shooters (like steph or klay) see a 10-15 percent accuracy drop from wide open to heavily contested. Not luka.
His wide opens (42,9%) are better than his heavily contested (38%!!!), true, but his heavily contested are indeed better than his open shots (34,5%). He also shoots some of the hardest shots, only assisted on threes 25-30% of the time (for reference steph is about 60%).
Mj, kd, steph, dame are all in the 4-8% above expected fg% bracket. Kobe took too many tough shots, so is only 2-4% above expected. Luka? As efficient as kd at 7-8%.
Then ofc there’s Jokic breaking the scale at +12%, but that’s not adjusted for his absurd efficiency on close shots like floaters (20 ish % more accurate than league average), hook shots, contested push shots, short fadeaways. Without that he compares to Durant in the midrange and is good, not elite-elite, from 3, for his career. So… Just very, very good, not “how the hell is he breaking the scale”-good.

Some players are just more comfortable taking tougher shots they dont overthink those…prime example is JR Smith as well..one play will clank a wide open 3 and then next play will hit a falling away baseline 3

I realized that there was no arena dj/piano/whatever guy so you couldn’t even get a “defense” chant out of anyone. Also, the prices are insane, but even rich people would chant sometimes. Only advantage of playing at home is the sleeping in your own house.
