I’ve been a Spurs fan since I was 8 (I’m 44 now). Spurs fans are excellent at holding grudges. I don’t live in SA anymore but I still totally would boo him. It’s HOW he left that’s the problem. I don’t think the Spurs would boo DeJounte Murray anymore if he’s healthy next season when the Pelicans play SA.

To answer the main question, I think Vince Carter was booed in Toronto even longer after admitting he gave half-assed effort sometimes.

Spurs wouldnt have the team they have if Kawhi hadnt pulled that shiz, so thank him for that and for 2014. However, I cant name any other player that was getting paid under the table by another team while he was still on a different team just so he would go to that franchise. He deserves those boos.

San Antonio only has the one major professional sports team, so the fans’ resentment is highly concentrated towards the one guy that slithered out of the city by giving up on them. A lot of players have come and gone there, but not at his level and way of leaving. As you can see by his “endorsement deal” salary cap circumvention, he’s a weirdo and a scumbag.

Well into his not-playing-drama era with the Spurs I went to a home game there as an away fan and as we were leaving the game the people walking out with us were chanting “f-ck Kawhi”. Not a dozen people. Everyone. It was surreal.

There’s a long history of my team hating their owner and GMs for decades so I’m used to that kind of thing getting expressed collectively. I was not used to the star player getting it like that. But that’s how hard the fans picked the team over him at that stage.

Spurs thought they were going to continue their dynasty with guy they drafted and passed the torch to and instead he abdicated. They don’t have a history of home grown guys not being loyal so all their boos go to him forever I guess.
