In a basketball game the two teams will run up and down the court a little over 100 times. The team that is able to either score more efficiently, or else score slightly less efficiently while creating more possessions for themselves will win the game. The things you do to help your team score more efficiently are enormously important, and the things you do to stop the other team from scoring efficiently are enormously important.

When you are a high usage player who scores at average efficiency, you drag your entire team towards the average, and if you turn the ball over at all while scoring at average efficiency then you are dragging your team below average efficiency. The rest of the team then needs to score even higher above average efficiency to beat the average opponent.

Paolo scores well below league average efficiency most of the time. AND he is very big, which means he has to rebound (but he won’t or can’t) or else his team loses out on the opportunity to play a different big player who will rebound. AND he can’t defend the rim so the Magic have to play another big player next to him who is not going to be a very good shooter. AND Paolo can’t shoot from 3 himself, so now there are almost always at least 2 bad shooters on the court. AND he holds the ball a long time hurting his ability to pass out of bad possessions and hurting the ability of actual good shooters to get open.

you have spent your whole basketball life understanding that the goal is for all the players on the team combined to score more points than all of the opponent players combined per 48 minute game (which is simple arithmetic, which is an algorithm).

lol I think the point you’re trying to make is that these players are “good”, but not very efficient. Several players here suck in comparison to actual stars, but for others them using a lot of possessions while not being efficient is a primary reason why their team has either no chance or a very very slim chance to win the title this season.

Yes it is bad if you want to be better than average at winning NBA basketball games. Let’s compare Paolo last year after the all star break **to other high usage players**.

29 players averaged 27% or more usage, played >30 mpg, and played at least 14 games after the ASB last year.

Paolo ranked 16th out of those 29, meaning that on average the other team was going to have a better high usage scorer than him, and the teams that are actually good always have a better high usage scorer than him.

Golden State, Denver, Milwaukee, OKC, Minnesota, Clippers, Knicks, Lakers Detroit. All of them had at least one scorer in that category better than Paolo and some of them had two.

It’s hilarious I’ve been telling you guys for years that Paolo sucks as a number one option, and as he has sucked even worse this year you guys still can’t admit it. He is a quagmire player. Good enough that you need to pay him, but not good enough to take your team anywhere.

that’s very true, and if you are humongous and spend all game taking dumbass horrible shots instead of going to the basket you hurt the ability of you and your teammates to win the game. If you are humongous and you either suck at rebounding or refuse to rebound then you prevent another large player from playing who could potentially help the team. If you are humongous and you can neither shoot nor play center than you hurt the ability of management to roll out effective lineups around you.

The good thing is that if you watch the games, it’s REALLY easy to weed out who’s just parroting bad opinions.

Anytime I see someone start spouting off about how bad Bam has been this year, it’s incredibly obvious they have no clue what they’re talking about.

The Paolo pile-on is another one. Dude’s imperfect but he’s clearly still the present and future of the Magic. If you ask people in here, they act like he’s playing himself out of the league.
