[Highlight] Team Canada wins their first game of the World Baseball Classic
Phillippe Aumont has not played a MLB game since 2015. He hasn’t played a professional game in the 2020s. But when Canada calls he is there
Ryan Dempster pitched for Canada too I want to say in like 2017…he had been retired for a while by that point
Eric Gagne pitched in 2017 as well. That was sweet, retired in ‘08
Gagne was throwing heat too! Hit low/mid 90s
A true patriot
As someone said in the game day thread, what is Team Canada without one extremely retired dude?
so is he that good or ere they that hard up for pitchers?
I think Canada bringing in a pitchers who’s been a farmer for the past 5+ years tells you everything you need to know about our bullpen
Farming dubs.
Mowing fields and mowing batters
Karma farming
He was one of those prototypical highly touted prospects who never panned out. He was in the first Cliff Lee trade
Exactly how retired is Phillippe Aumont?
Dude’s been running his own farm for 5+ yrs now
Wait, genuinely?
Yeah, they talked about it on the broadcast, too. Said the farm is located outside of Gatineau. I don’t know the specifics, but he’s basically a farmer now.
So Tom Green levels of retired
Couple of Capital Region legends
Hull of a life.
Technically, they said his farm was located in “Gah-TEE-know”
Now, if they said it was in Hull, then you would know the crew was from the NCR
Canada’s farm system is… an actual farm
Good on them for having an actual canadian though and not some current player who’s grandmother in law visited Toronto once
Aumont is so retired that the last team he played for professionally no longer exists. Neither does the last league he pitched in.
Cincinnatus levels of retired
He’s super retired.
He last played in MLB-affiliated baseball in August 2018 with the Tigers’ AAA team. He signed a minor league deal with the Jays but did not pitch after spring training in 2019.
He then played in the now defuct independent league Canadian-American Association for the summer of 2019.
He didn’t play anywhere at all in 2020 and announced his retirement in September 2020.
Then Team Canada asked him to pitch in the 2023 WBC, which he did.
Then he announced his retirement again.
Then Team Canada asked him to pitch in this WBC, and here we are.
Wait, the same dude we drafted 1st round during the Jack Z era? He looks like a HS coach rather than a player at this point.
He basically is, he’s 37 and has spent a full 6 years away from professional baseball.
Right handed Randy Johnson was the comp at the time lol
And that’s different than Ryan “the Little Unit” Anderson - the other RJ comp.
Ryan Anderson is my go-to guy for the TINSTAAPP explanation. He was the #1 prospect in the Mariners system for 3 years in a row, and then *poof*, it was gone (injuries).
As retired as Vance Worley is for Great Britain lol
He was already retired when he appeared in the last WBC.
Dude just farms until his nation needs him.
Has pitched professionally since 2019
That’s hilarious. I thought this was just a meme as I stopped watching when they switch pitchers for 1 out. Low-key hilarious he is back for Canada. Of course he is somehow playing again for them.
Phillipe ‘the Farmer’ Aumont closing it out
YOUR OUT HAS BEEN HARVESTED
A good day for Canada and therefore the world
As is tradition
Dark horse in the running? Maybe… 😔
Definitely a good chance of making it out of the group stage, and we have an MLB level starting lineup. I just don’t see the pitching depth lasting against the likes of Japan/USA. That being said, it’s baseball and anything can happen in a single game elimination format.
What could’ve been if we managed to have Tong, Brash, Pivetta, and Cade Smith on this team.
And missing Freddie for some extra offense :(
how many teams truly have all of their top talent ? seems most have 70-80% of their top guys
Matters more for the low-mid end teams.
Lack of pitching depth really has been the death blow for so many teams in this tournament.
It really feels like the final is going to be U.S. and Japan again on the fact that their pitching staffs just feel best equipped to handle a fast single elimination tournament like this one
Pretty much yeah. I know “anything can happen in baseball” is the line but you kind of need a competent pitching staff in the first place in order to have a chance at an upset.
Coming for baseball the same way USA came for our hockey
Even if they make it out of the Group Stage good chance they get USA in the QF
If Canada wins their pool they won’t have to face the States until the semis (assuming for the moment the States win their pool as well, which is a pretty safe assumption)
Hopefully the baseball gods give us that win too 🙏
Literally got striked out by a French farmer who hasn’t played high level baseball in 5 years
Just out there in the field harvesting his outs.
Quebecois. Or french-canadian. stop saying french, both are different people, just like how austrians arent germans at all
We’re all sorry on this blessed day.
We’re going all the way, baby!
And by “all the way”, I mean out of the group stage for the first time ever!
Good game buddy
Canada/Australia final. As we all predicted
Let’s go Naylors (plural)!
clap clap, clap clap clap
The Naylor to Naylor groundout was awesome defense today
Man I really hope the MLB expands to a western team in Canada. Vancouver most likely. It would be such a massive boost to baseball interest, entrenches the MLB internationally more instead of “without Toronto it’s not a World Series” and then interest would build across the country with the rivalry that would unfold. A rivalry between Montreal and Toronto would be big, but as a western Canadian I don’t give a shit about the rivalry. NYY and Toronto is a bigger deal to me. Throw a West vs East Canada rivalry and everyone gets on board. That builds passion and intensity which creates moments and then interest for youth baseball and then we have a really solid core in 20-25 years after expansion and shit.
A Vancouver MLB team would expose to Seattle how much Canadians have been subsidizing their team
I love it
If only bo didnt play catcher. Id love to reunite the naylor boys on the mariners
I doubt Cleveland says no to a Naylor-Raleigh swap
South Park reference
Russell Martin looks like he could still play.
Let’s Fucking Go, eh!!
Look at Phillippe Aumont creaking all over the mound finishing a game in 2026!
I’m happy for Canada. I really hope they win their pool, a tough road ahead against PR
Someone hook a man up with a way to watch this shit. DM me and I can pay with facts about Ancient Rome.
We can play baseball ?! I thought we just play hockey. 🤷♀️
Ruben Amaro Jr smiles with a smug expression.
“Cliff Lee who?” He asks, to no one, as he sits atop his porcelain throne, pinching off the final loaf.
There is no greater satisfaction.
Canadian team just a given ‘er, eh?
It’s against the Rockies
How can a wire to wire win be dominant? Lol
