5 Tatum-Based Takeaways
#1- The smile on my face.
The best takeaway you can ask for!
Team 3 point shooting about to rise
Tatum always hit dudes in stride and in the pocket
Excellent breakdown as always, capturing all the boxes to check from film. Thank you.
Two-men game with Queta was really exciting and lateral movement on D was really way better than I expected and was a sigh. Processing the game was never in question anyway. One thing I am not that sure of from your list is boxing-out though, he seemed a little bit more picky on box-outs and help defense on driving lanes but that is nothing to worry about at this point. It really seems like ramping up the conditioning is the only thing needed.
EDIT: I think everyone should check the video breakdown as a whole, it is a easy, quick and fun read with good examples. Don’t miss it by only scrolling down comments.
everyone on this board wants Tatum to score 30ppg and be the same player right away. I think people need to look at the next 20 games as part of his rehab.
the team likely just wants to see that he can remain healthy, knock the rust off, get his conditioning under him and just see improvement every game/every week. I mean he hasn’t played real NBA basketball in 10 months. These other guys out there have been playing since September/October. not to mention the time Tatum missed while he was rehabbing and couldnt start on court drills.
theres also the confidence aspect of this. he needs to play more and more games and go through more and more situations to mentally feel no fear of his achilles. anyone who has suffered any injury can tell you going back to the same situation that you got injured is tough at first because even if you are fully healed in the back of your mind you just keep thinking of the feeling when you tore or injured something.
to me 15ppg, 12rpg and 7assists in 27minutes is far more than I expected.
I may be biased, but the court just felt more open with him there. Even when he’s around the arc. Like his defender is 2 steps closer than anyone else. It would really be cool to see the actual difference.
I thought the whole team got better looks from 3 and considerably better looks at the rim.
One thing I noticed is that, for right now, he does seem a little slow and hesitant on defense. Most of the game he was able to hide by guarding the guy who is just standing in the corner for the kick out 3. I think as more game film comes out, teams will look to target him on defense until he gets fully up to speed.
