Shohei Ohtani applauds his Dodger teammate Hyeseong Kim as he rounds the bases after his game-tying HR
Ichiro would never
Ichiro would have impaled him with a Japanese flag during spring training last year.
Reminds me of Kobe running through Pau’s chest at the Olympics
Just a 330 ft javelin throw from right field directly to home plate.
Literal lawn dart
lmao
Ohtani is unironically one of the top reasons Korean sentiment on Japan is probably the best it’s been in a long time. He’s the best ambassador for the sport and his country.
He’s so, so much better at Ichiro at not repeatedly stabbing his finger into open historic wounds. You’re completely right, Ohtani’s rep in Korea is basically perfect.
Not trying to necessarily excuse it, but I think its probably explained by Ichiro most likely being raised by parents who were living/raised as a part of Imperial Japan, an extremely different culture regarding relations to Korea. Obviously, Ohtani was not.
Edit: One example from Ichiro’s wiki page: “When Suzuki joined his high-school baseball team, his father told the coach, “No matter how good Ichiro is, don’t ever praise him. We have to make him spiritually strong.””
Not necessarily trying to blame his father either. Thats literally just the culture he was raised in, thats what he thought was best (and maybe he wasnt 100% wrong, but obviously not 100% right either)
He grew up in imperial japan when they colonized Korea and committed atrocities against them, not the other way around. So it’s not like he grew up resentful of his oppressors, he was part of the oppressing group.
Not that it matters either way, this is the exact same excuse that people use for their grandparents making racist remarks. “they grew up in a different time” doesn’t justify bigotry.
I have zero respect for ichiro’s disrespectful ass and unlimited respect for Ohtani, man is a saint
Ichiro doesn’t even acknowledge your existence.
Ohtani’s parents also seem like wonderful people in general. Emphasized humility and respect as core values which Ohtani clearly still carries today.
People also don’t get how different Korea - Japan relations are now than even 20 years ago. Japanese cultural imports weren’t fully legal in Korea until 2004, only two years before Ichiro’s messed up Korea comments.
he’s so adorable lol, of all the superstars in sports he’s gotta be the only one who’s universally loved. controversies just don’t stick to him like it would occasionally with LeBron or Ronaldo or something
Hard to clap when you’ve always got one hand holding your nose because of the smell of garlic.
Man, what a great comment. I knew there was a joke somewhere there, couldn’t find it, but this just fucking nailed it.
Common Shohei W
Everyone is having a great time. Especially Ohtani!
You can’t not love Ohtani
You can hate the Dodgers all you want, but you can’t hate Ohtani
I hate him cuz I ain’t him.
I tried this, it didn’t work, still love Ohtani, please help :(
i still like him tbh, he’s a chill guy who always delivers in one form or another.
I hate him cause I anum
It’s really true.
your suzuki is something else too. damn.
Him deciding to go to Trumps white house and shake his fuckin hand is what did it for me so idk
Blame management for going. Culturally, a Japanese person isn’t going to rock the boat and go against the bosses wishes. He’s also under such a microscope, it would have made an international scene.
He’s not going to do something that could jeopardize Japan’s relationship with America.
Childish reason not to like someone
given the historical beef between these two countries i’m surprised he did that lol
Bro is single handedly gonna repair Japan and Korea international relations.
I’m just joking but in all honesty, Korean netizens love him just as much as Japan does. It’s all the small things like pronouncing Hyeseong’s name correctly, being respectful to Korean players and Korea overall, etc… Just n amazing role model for the sport and his country.
When Ohtani came to Korea for the Seoul Series, he got quite the welcome in Incheon Airport: https://www.latimes.com/world-nation/story/2024-03-18/how-a-south-korean-radio-producer-came-to-worship-dodger-superstar-shohei-ohtani
Ohtani is one of the biggest sports celebrities in Korea
Younger Korean and Japanese people don’t have the same level of heat their parents did
Speaking as a Japanese guy, I totally agree with this. Like there are definitely hard right political people on both sides that hate each other even in our equivalent of Gen Z, but they are in a distinct minority.
I’m in my early 40s, but one of my closest friends is Korean, and we bonded over a mutual love of Dragonball and streetfighter fighting games. People from my generation are definitely much friendly to each other thanks to the popularity of Japanese manga and anime.
Then K-pop and K-dramas took off in Japan, and you have a whole generation of kids in Japan who idolze Korean pop stars as well.
Toss in Ohtani, Demon Slayer, and all the other cultural crossovers and among the younger generation, you have like a small minority of hard line crazies that still hate each other and complain about their country’s young people falling in love with the “enemy” and everyone else wondering what’s wrongw ith them.
There’s still a lot of animosity, particular among people who were born in the md 1970s or earlier. Even a fair amount of it in my generation born in the 80s. But definitely the younger you get, the less of it there is.
That being said, we’ll always be sports rivals in national competitions, but I hope it’s more like a France/Germany world cup rivalry lol.
Yup my girlfriend is Taiwanese and she loves japan, so does all her friends.
Her parents on the other hand dont hate japan but they dont like it either, her mom’s mom was a victim of Japanese occupation.
There’s also a lot of Korean’s visiting Japan for holidays these days
Demon Slayer
Made me wonder if this was a manwha like Solo Leveling originally, but I guess you’re just referring to the fact that it’s really popular in Korea. Though my google search is telling me that they changed Tanjiro’s earrings in the Korean version because they have similarities to the rising sun flag of imperial Japan.
You might be joking but my Korean mom who boycotts everything Japan related got interested in baseball when Ohtani started getting popular and asks me about him time to time lmao. She’s never watched a single second of sport in her life.
We saw Ohtani the peacemaker in that Dodgers Padres series last year.
it’s actually more the friendship between hyeseong and yoshi that they report on more in korea, from what I’ve heard! so much so that when hyeseong went back home after the world series he kept being asked about yoshi, which is kind of sweet
It’s pretty clear that Shohei and Hyeseong are friends from the way they interacted last season, so it’s not a surprise really.
Shohei is The One
Main character for real
Ohtani took out all of his lesser versions to become The One. Makes total sense now.
Ohtani has always been pro “pan-Asia” in the sense of celebrating excellence among Asians.
Ex. Taiwan beating Japan in Premier 12
Shohei wants to bring back the Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere, confirmed.
he’s gonna be our Supreme Leader
tbh I’d be surprised if he cared. He just wants to play baseball and that’s it lmao.
Shohei and Kim are gonna fix their relationship, trust.
Shohei says great things about Korea and the baseball players from there. He’s just so respectful and recognizes game. Ichiro on the other hand….
S stands for Saint and I stands for Imperialist
its not that surprising, Shohei, Yamamoto, Roki and Kim are always seen together in the dugout during the season and when he was asked who hes looking to see on Korea he said that he was rooting for Hyeseong to do well because they’re teammates
[deleted]
But of an understatement lol. Japan literally occupied Korea from ww1-ww2.
I mean, you might not like it. But that’s the undercurrent to why the Korea vs Japan rivalry feels so real… cause it kinda is.
Nah it’s way, way more tension between Korea and Japan. A lot of it bc how Japanese soldiers treated Koreans during ww2 and disputes between the governments since then
It’s mostly because they pretended like they didn’t do anything wrong once the war was over. Like everyone loves Germany now because they didn’t deny what they did and actually tried to make amends. Japan basically gaslit themselves into thinking they weren’t that bad, and that understandably continues to piss off all the countries in the region to this day.
“We got nuked, we’re the real victims now”
they didn’t deny what they did and actually tried to make amends. Japan basically gaslit themselves into thinking they weren’t that bad
Yea sorry but I can’t let this one slip. Japan has apologised literally dozens of times and paid billions in reparations. I’m talking every single Prime Minister has apologised at least once as well as numerous emperors (although Shinzo Abe’s apology was kind of walked back with later dumb comments). https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_war_apology_statements_issued_by_Japan
Japan has also paid billions in reparations to China, Korea, Philippines, Indonesia, etc. In fact Japan paid \(30billion+ to China alone in the Official Development Assistance (ODA). Which is estimated at \)130 billion to $150 billion in todays value. That program continued to pay China all the way up until 2022 only when China became the world’s 2nd largest economy. Many economists say that the ODA was a major factor in fuelling China’s economic expansion in the 20th century.
Everyone tries to compare Japan with Germany after ww2 but they are 2 completely different situations. The main difference between the separation of West and East Germany after the war. Which obviously made neighbouring countries more involved in Germany’s fate, and with Germany being ground zero for the cold war it was a lot easier to forgive them for their past as they had much bigger problems at hand (USSR).
Also Germany was very smart in the way it was able to separate itself from the Nazi party. When people think of ww2 Germany they think Hitler and ‘Nazi’s’ but most people couldn’t even tell you who was Japan’s leader at the time or the government. And whilst many try to just brush the Nazi’s off as a anomaly in German history, we can’t forget that there were literally millions of German’s cheering on the Nazi’s during their extravagant military parades even long after they had begun their invasions. This wasn’t some dictator that came into power through a military coup, Hitler was incredibly popular in Germany and was voted into power by the people. On the other hand Hideki Tojo was NOT voted into power by the people of Japan, he came to power through a campaign of assassinations and coups by his military. Unlike the clear “Nazi Party” label for Germany, Japan’s wartime regime is best described as a military-dominated authoritarian state and Tojo didn’t have anywhere near the public support Hitler did. Which is why I have a problem with the collective guilt people try to inflict on modern day Japanese people over 80 years after ww2 has ended. Their grandparents or great grandparents that fought in the war were basically mobilised slaves to a rampaging ruthless military dictatorship who answered to noone. Just look at the fate of the Kamikaze pilots. What kind of leaders do that to their own people. And the sad part is in the end it was the Japanese people who suffered the most, not the military leaders. Whether it was the Tokyo fire bombing’s or the 2 nukes dropped. It was civilians who wore the brunt of casualties in both.
Sorry as a Chinese I can’t let this slip either, no doubt ODA is a good thing to repay the damage, but politically it’s also without any doubt government level still never fully admit the atrocious they’ve done in the war, just imagine Germany put some church home for the Nazis and prime minister etc go to visit every year.
The way Kaoru Mitoma did recently in that Brighton public event celebrate a life of Japanese WW2 solider, I know there’s difference as the guy is known by his post war thing, but still that shows the educational level what Japanese younger generation has been exposed to by the textbook thing etc. Of course US (GHQ etc) contributed heavily on this.
Giants vs. Dodgers if the Dodgers invaded, occupied and committed war crimes in San Francisco during WWII (the Dodgers would do this if they could)

That’s one of his lil bros, Yama, Roki and Hyeseong.
Non-Dodger fans don’t know the loving chemistry of the 4.
NPB is run by a bunch of old boomers who recently got together and determined that players fraternizing and being friendly on the field is a bad thing that fans shouldn’t see. Kinda fun seeing Ohtani just run right over another unwritten rule.
What are they gonna do, not play the guy with 2.875 OPS? 😆
Also the guy is a living god in Japan, what he says goes. I’m just glad he’s a stand up respectable guy on top of all the talent.
What happened to the game that I used to love?
Games gone
He’s one of us when we see a friend do something great.
Shohei is on camera singing along to the “let’s go Blue Jays” chant in the last world series. He’s in his own little world.
He just loves ball. It’s a beautiful thing.
Yo fr? Where can I see that 😂
It was very quick, on the official broadcast. He did the “bum bum bububum” part of the chant while milling about in the dugout (not the actual “let’s go blue jays” part, that would be crazy). But he’s just completely connected with the energy of the game.
He’s so cool.
Shohei the Magnanimous
I simply cannot hate this man. Wish he was a Padre.
Imagine being Mark Ripperger, possibly the only person on Ohtani’s shit list.
Don’t forget Ippei
Looking forward to Ohtani Kim Summit to solve Korean Japan geopolitics forever.
through the power of friendship!
Shohei: “maybe he can help us 3 peat”
Oh I want him inside me!
Once again, I really wished that my Giants offered $1B.
He still would have gone to stupid dodgers but at least you made them pay $1B.
1B over 30 years all backloaded
traditionalists are fuming that he isnt contributing to the beef
ohtani vibes
Shohei bet that Kim would hit a homer
such an amazing guy.. positive
Man I LOVE Ohtani but wtf is next…. Ohtani takes a drink of water?
Good lord.
He’s an engagement machine, and this is a cool little moment. Got you to comment, didn’t it?
He clapped his hands a few times for his teammate. Cool little moment? My point is it’s literally not….
And yea I commented. Great gotcha! Smh.
You’ve commented twice, now.
It’s fascinating to me that someone could be so upset over something so trivial.
No way that’ll go before “Ohtani takes a deep breath.” 😤
Basically
Do we need to see and hear about everything this guy does?
Yes please
He probably had the over!
You ☝🏽
You probably thought you were really witty and original with that ‘zinger’ eh?
