I remember watching an Orioles game with my buddy and he was like wow your 3rd baseman is having a game.
It reminded me how much I took for granted the excellence in what Machado made look routine daily
He is definitely one of those players where I saw him when he was young and it was immediately like, yup, that guy is gonna be an all-timer at 3rd.
I still wish we never traded him and extended him earlier. He’s strolling into the HOF and he could have done it as an Oriole.

I got Machado’d in a game once, and I was laughing too hard to be upset š
It’s not possible to describe in words how hard it is to accurately throw a baseball in the oposite direction, away from the momentum of your entire body.
Exactly what I was thinking. That is all arm and no legs helping that throw. The average human doesn’t even make that toss to the pitchers mound without bouncing it.
And, as incredible as that is, to me the placement is even more unbelievable. It’s a strike to the first baseman. He does it so effortlessly, too, and you know he would make this play 10 out 10 times.
From third to first no less. I feel like people don’t truly understand how far that actually is….
According to a quick google earth measurement of a major league field, that throw was roughly 47 yards. All arm, moving away from his target. Good lord.
Ok, damn. I’ve watched ball my entire life and am generally aware of the dimensions of the field but I’ve never seen it expressed in yards. That puts it into perspective big time. That is a QB running to his right along the 37 yard line and throwing a strike across his body to a stationary receiver in the back of the end zone. At least in football, the receiver moves to the ball.
Actual distance from third to first (or home to second) formula would be 90*(sqrt(2)) =127.279 ft
Obviously Manny was a bit deeper though
A decade ago I gifted my dad a trip to the Field of Dreams site. We took the field, which we had all to ourselves, to play catch from first to third.
We were not prepared for how fucking far they are from each other, and how much had to be put into each throw when compared to tossing the ball in the backyard.

Machado was just out of rookie ball or something getting spring reps in with big leaguers and Antonelli says he knew Machado was legit big league material after watching him throw the ball around.the infield. Even as a younger teenager he was heads and shoulders above every other fielder there in terms of his arm. From power to accuracy to speed Machado has always just been extremely crisp with this shit

Yeah, baseball players might not be as flashy overall as football or basketball players, but it’s still an insane level of athleticism. I’ll always die on the hill that hitting a baseball thrown by a major league pitcher is the single hardest thing in sports.
