I really think the league just needs to accept the fact that you can never fully get rid of tanking. No matter what you choose to do, teams will find a way to tank still. The reward is simply too great. Do you see how good Wemby is in year 3? San Antonio was one of the worst teams in the league since Tim retired. Now, they are right back in championship contention, largely thanks to one player.

Tanking will never go away. Just accept that some years there will be less tanking than other years.

Each lottery team has a number of ping pong balls equal to their win total, to encourage winning whenever possible.

Where did this “actually tanking is good” sect come from, I thought we all agreed the league needed to do something about multi-season franchise tanking 5 years ago

Really simple… 3 Tiers

Tier 1 (Top 8 teams who advance past 1st round) continue to draft in reverse order of playoff exit.

Tier 2 (Next 12 teams who made play-in or playoffs) Each team in this tier will have the same odds of picks 11-22

Tier 3 (Bottom 10 teams) each team in this tier will have same odds of top 10 picks with following exceptions…. no team can get a top 5 pick in back to back years. If ping pong has such team in top 5.. they automatically pick 6 (if multiple teams in this scenario the higher draft position the previous year will pick lower of those teams and so on)

Also the elimination of protected picks & pick swaps

I promise you the tanking isn’t going to be this bad next season because the draft class is considered a lot weaker. Almost all the suggested changes that were put out a few weeks ago were really dumb. This feels so reactive, and I have no doubt the changes are going to make things worse and have some bad unintended consequences.

Tanking being the biggest focus of the league is so dumb.

Reversing odds for lottery teams for even number lottery picks is mathematically similar to flattening the odds overall while still being weighted towards helping the worst teams (worst teams still have best odds for 1st and 3rd picks) but actively hurts you for losing games in a way that the current system does not as your odds for getting the #1 pick (and #3,#5, etc) increase, you lower your odds of getting the #2 pick (and #4, #6, etc) should you NOT get the #1 pick.

The current system only hurts you in the draft for winning games and only rewards you for losing. Mixing the odds completely changes that.

Implication here is pretty clear. Substantial changes will not, in fact, be substantial.

My question is doesn’t this screw over teams that traded for draft capital from teams expected to be bad? If they reduce the odds of those picks being good, it’s retroactively decreasing the value of the asset they acquired.

I assumed any major draft reform would be rolled out with a bit of advanced notice.

At this point I’m 100% for divorcing record altogether, just do The Wheel system so every team has the opportunity to pick in the top six every five years. Then you’ll see what franchises are competently run and not.

I think bad owners will start facing a lot more heat from fans when they are exposed for how terrible their operations are. The Sacramento Kings have not been “unlucky” for 20 years, just like the Timberwolves weren’t unlucky for 30 years before A-Rod bought the team.

If you divorce the draft from record, the pretense that the draft is about fair talent distribution falls apart. So then it’s just there as a form of labor control. It’s time to eliminate it.

I want to see the “earn a draft point for every victory against a team with a better end-of-season record than you” model just once for shits and giggles.

Just do straight draft order like the NFL but put a cap on how many top 5 picks you can have over a certain time frame. This way bad teams can actually get the best picks. I’m sure Silver would rather completely flatten the odds so the Spurs can have another top pick. Might as well set the draft order by which fanbase deposits the most money into their FanDuel and DraftKings accounts.

Would be awesome if they addressed flopping in a serious way but we all know the high/lowlights is what drives success for this league so we will keep it when it means artificially inflated PPG and doesn’t interfere with the dunks and the threes

Punishing teams for being bad is a terrible idea. They’re just going to tilt the league even more towards the destination cities.

Adam Silver needs to have the courage to just exercise discretion and issue penalties.

Incrementalism is good, that’s why Stalin did his changes in 5 year plans. 1 year would have been a big shock to the system, I’m sure Silver will be following the 5 year plan timeline. I don’t know any specifics but I would be very happy if at the end of the 5 years there was no longer a place for Rich Paul in the league.

A simple and straight forward lottery system like powerball seems like an obvious answer. Want to reward lower preforming teams? Split the lottery in 2 groups.

Worst half of the league draws first, then on to bucket number 2. Refill, re-draw, etc.

He forced the in season tournament in and seems to have it get more attention and glamor than the actual NBA Finals. He wants. Euro league when there are already overseas leagues. He wants to try and fix tanking when it has been around forever not much of a problem.

They should keep it the same but add in the value of the loss depending on the vicotirious teams record at the end of the year. If you lose to a good team that doesn’t count much compared to losing to a bad team.

One incremental step the league can take regarding tanking….You can only get a Top 4 pick once every 3 years. Call it a “repeater tax” on tanking. If you are bottom 4 and you received a top 4 pick in the last 2 years, you cannot pick any earlier than #15. If multiple teams fall into that category, then they would be slotted based on record in slots 15, 16, 17 and so on. Teams would be less likely to tank if they were forced to pick in the back half of the draft. Add that in with some of the other measures being considered.

Maybe there should be a penalty for habitual tankers, ie if 3 years in a row you can pick no less than pick 15 in the next draft

I kinda like the idea of just tossing all college players into free agency and make teams try their best to sign the players they want.

There’s also the idea that was thrown around where wins after being eliminated from the playoffs will count towards the draft rankings.

Adam Silver has somehow managed to screw up most of his decisions. Teams have been tanking forever. It’s not a problem. You’re going to have bad teams that’s fine.

Focus on the fact that an NBA game starts on TV 20 minutes later than advertised, and takes 3 hours to watch due to the poor end of game and challenge and review rules.

I’m a die hard NBA guy; league pass, streaming services, YouTubeTV. The whole thing. And I’m struggling to watch these games. The pacing is just so bad. I don’t need challenges, I don’t need reviews, I don’t care if we get some calls wrong. People are still gonna post highlights of calls they disagree with even if they’re wrong. Just let refs be apart of it.

Silver has made some good changes, but mostly he’s been overly capitalistic, introduced mass sports gambling, and hurt much of the sport.

This annoys me more than it should. Who cares if the teams that nobody are watching tank so they have a better shot(only shot for the most part) to become relevant. It’s not like the NBA makes it easy if people did want to watch those teams anyway. Poor officiating, gambling, load management, and just an overall lack of importance to the regular season. These are all bigger issues but letsfocus on tanking.

I agree that you could decrease incentive to tank by flattening lottery odds but I think that will also decrease parity. You could have a team like the Kings be bottom 3 for 5 years and get no top picks, so the basement dwellers would be even more stuck at the bottom. I don’t think there’s a perfect solution
